MAY from NBC Boards

I was just on a message board and one of the executive producers from GL posted saying that the main heads at CBS head quarters are thinking about cutting back all their soaps Y&R,B&B,GL,ATWT.From 5 days a week to 3 days a week, from what I read the main reason they are doing this is beacuse soaps are at a all time low and plus CBS is tired of dishing out the mega bucks for very little profit.Plus alot of the big name actors/actress are either leaving or retiring. It doesn't say if ABC is considering doing this or even NBC it just said that CBS was,I know in January Passions starting doing this on DirecTv but that was only to stretch out the final espiodes. So what do you think,is this the beging of the end of Daytime?

I thought this was only P&G? :o

It'd stun me if Y&R and B&B went to three days a week! I mean I know these are hard times but the ABC soaps and Days seem to be going just fine even with all the low ratings they keep hitting. Heck, OLTL has had so many returns this year despite constantly hitting new lows, and doesn't seem to be experiencing any budget problems, nor do that many of the other soaps except(obviously) GL. It'd just baffle me if the Bell soaps went to three days a week with ATWT and GL.

I've never heard of Executive Producers posting on boards about their shows, the P&G rumors have been out there for awhile now........

I doubt Y&R and B&B will allow this. Those 2 shows are doing well with the ratings. I'll treat this as a rumor for these two shows.

As for GL & ATWT, only Ellen can save them. j/k
I'm praying for these two soaps. I have a feeling P&G is planning to dump these two soaps. I hate those bastards!

I wonder if May read it on this board and he thought Hunter(Nelson Branco) is the EP of GL? LOLOL

I doubt seriously that CBS would reduce the episodes of Y&R and B&B. ATWT and GL are another story though. Yes ratings are at an all time low, but I don't see that as an answer. Also, after Nelson posted this it doesn't surprise me that now all of a sudden all these "new meetings" are taking place.

I would hate if this happened to Y&R. It would slow down everything. It would take weeks for one day to play out. I hope this is not true.

Sharongate, bitches!

That poster is referring to the recent interview with Chris Goutman (ATWT's EP, not GL's!) where he said he thought people didn't have the patience to watch 5 days a week anymore. Nothing else has been said on the matter, this poster obviously has her facts mixed up.

I doubt it was an exec producer, but playing devil's advocate...honestly, nothing would surprise me anymore.

I don't think any of the soaps are safe from things like this. They might think cutting back on Y&R and B&B will increase their lifespan five or ten years, budget-wise. WHO KNOWS! Anything is possible, IMO.

Y&R and B&B will never agree to this because of their syndication profits. GL and ATWT are thinking about it — and trust me, every exec and advertiser is buzzing about it.

God, I would so much rather P&G just cancel their shows than whittle them down to basically nothing.

I'd think this would still be a major headache when they factor in the affiliates. What are they going to fill two hours of the week with when all syndicated programming they could choose from only goes 5 hours a week?

I said it in another thread, they'd be smarter to just reduce them both to 30 minutes and air 5 days a week. They'd only need to make 2.5 hrs of TV a week, which would be more cost effective. It'd force them to trim their fat, and refocus their stories, and make everything more watchable to the casual viewer if they could do it right. The run time would make watching their shows less of a burden for the already time-crunched average person. They wouldnt have to deal with people forgetting what day their show`s on, and it would likely cause an increase to GL`s ratings since the affiliates would be more likely to air ATWT and GL back-to-back to fill the hour, instead of the show airing in some markets at 10am. Afterall, GL being left out of the CBS soap block in key markets as been hurting them for years. Plus the affiliates would love to get an hour back in their weekday schedule, that`s another Dr. Phil or whatever they can throw in there and make some real money.

Personally, wouldn't it make more sense to simply cut both the shows back to 30 minutes? 5 days a week at 30 minutes is 2.5 hours as opposed to 3 days a week at 60 minutes which is 3 hours. Besides, 30 minute shows are much easier to repurpose than full hours. Personally, I wish soaps *would* go back to 30 minutes. IMO, even though the 60 minute expansions of soaps which begin with AW in 1975 were very successful at the time, it resulted in the deaths of quite a few series simply because they got pushed off the schedules. Hell, most of the shows are functioning with 30 minute sized casts now as it is. Reducing shows to 30 minutes would help to decrease budgets (actor contracts could be reduced for reduced screen time), productions costs would decrease because of the lowered production times, and stories would be forced to tighten up with much of the filler cut out. As an added bonus, it would allow for new soaps to premiere without pushing existing soaps completely off the air. Also, since many shows are now available online, 30 minutes is much more manageable for internet viewing.

I'm ok with both P&G shows going to 30 minutes 5 days a week. 3 days a week would not work. It could work 5 days a week. Both P&G soaps could cut cast down to the characters who matter and then just go with that. It would cut the fat and up the pace. I think it can work ok.

Y&R and B&B...no way. No way will it work. Why would they need to? They are #1 and #2. B&B is a half hour already. I think they are just doing just fine money-wise. Y&R has too many valuable characters that they could never cut down the cast and work as a half hour.

I agree with all the posters on the 30 minute thing. I've been thinking GL should do this for years. DH is right about the logistical headache a three episode week would cause the affiliates. That three days a week idea is one of the most ridiculous things to come from P&G yet and that's saying something! Goutman has been in the business for damned close to 30 years and KNOWS how affiliates work their daytime schedules. What a load of bullshit!!

I'm with Mason.

Y&R is so good right now, but what wil be left of the show if the Powers that be keep taking hatchets to it? Just look at how ATWT and GL are underperforming with the meager allocations they have now from the network.

Soaps need better writers and its own channel.

SOAPNet could have been that channel, but of course, Frons has turned it into all but a place for soaps...

GL and ATWT should talk to MyNetworkTV and see if they can get these 2 shows over there. Something needs to happen and it needs to happen soon. Something good!

Who even watches MyNetworkTV? Who even knows what it is and who's an affiliate? You think they're on the fast path to zero budget and cancellation on CBS, you wouldnt want to see what'd happen to them over there.
