There are very good reasons for that massive loss... |

Thanks Y&R. I'm really happy that most of our soaps did well. Especially AMC! ABC promoted AMC a lot so its nice to see those good ratings. Really nice. Lets hope they continue to go up for all the soaps.

But she is only -.1 behind Sheffer's ratings last year in all the key demos. That means she is doing something Sheffer wasn't doing and that is recovering the show. Sheffer was way off from the summer before. Here is his ratings for the same time period last year. Total Viewers: 5. DAYS 2,760,000 (+160,000/-457,000) HH: 5. OLTL 2.2/7 (same/-.2) <------ ties low rating Women 18-49 Viewers 2. DAYS 1,014,000 (+125,000/-174,000) Women 18-49 Rating 2. DAYS 1.5/10 (+.2/-.3) Girls 12-17 2. DAYS 23,000 (-26,000/-21,000) Women 18-34 Rating 1. DAYS 1.3/9 (+.2/-.5) Men 8. DAYS 523,000 (+17,000/-35,000) He was as much as -.5 still at that point in the 18-34. And even by the last week of December before the strike really hit he was still at #1 in 18-34 but was still off by -.4 from the year before.and still at 1.3 and the week before that had dropped the show to a .9 in the 18-34 rating. I don't know whehter this rise will last. All I know in the last few weeks the combo of Tomlin and Higley has turned the demos around. They are still hurting in HH's but at least they have stablilized there somewhat. And what I like is all the backstage grumbling mess that was coming out from there has seemed to die down. That was the kind of publicity the show did not need. I think if they continue on the road they are they could hit #1 in 18-49 again but they have got to really get a lot more of those viewers and HH's to tune in to make up for the 50 and over group that they are obviously losing. With all the other demos coming up they have to be losing in that demo and they have to be losing quite a bit there. Funny that it was the same demo Higley had trouble getting at OLTL - but who cares - definitely not the powers that be. Sad but what none of them realize is if they ever want to bring Y&R down that is the only way they can do it - produce a show that is attractive to all audiences. Y&R is pretty much the only show that does well in all demos. They do not try to gear toward one demographic group. They produce a balanced show (which was off during Latham's tenure) that gives all viewers something to tune into and to relate to. ******************************* AMC is starting to work on that some. AMC right now has the most diverse cast and the most realistic cast out there. They just need to beef up their older story as well as their younger story but they are getting all bases covered. They have a gay/lesbian story kicking off big time now. They have African American's involved in a big story. They have the Adam/Erica story that heavily features Pete/Colby. Opal has been used more. And there are rumors that Ruth is coming back. They have characters of all age starting to show up more as well as the diversity of the ethnic groups. If they don't make the mistake of putting the sextette on 24/7 again and making the show all about them they can build off these numbers. They did a big stunt just like in the old days when they would do it before or after Sweeps. Often in the old days sweeps months were building months. I remember in particular the Janice/Mac/Rachel/Mitch story on AW built to a conclusion all the way through February and ended the first week of March with the St. Croix location shoot and Rachel rescuing Mac by killing Janice. Also that was the week that Rachel slept with Mitch and conceived Matt. But back to AMC they have done the stunt followed by David's return and Bianca's return setting off 2 big stories. Also Erica finally got the truth out of Adam and now Adam is working to cover himself. So they have a lot to build on going into sweeps now. Oh and also it was the fallout with Jesse & Angie and the return of Rebecca. So they used the stunt wisely to kick off 3 big stories. Edited by Steve Frame, Oct 31 2008, 03:17 PM.

They must have lost BIG TIME in the Women 25-54 and Women 55+ demographics. They had to have lost OVER 150,000 of those age group viewers to account for a 44,000 viewer loss considering the gains in Young females, Women 18-49 and Males Viewers. |

Does anyone other than me find it odd that more men watch GL than OLTL or GH? One would think that with the mob being a big focus on GH that men would like that, but GH is always in last place among men. I still can't believe that GH is #7 in total viewers. That's downright scary! |

That's always been odd to me that GH does so poorly with men, considering all the guns, explosions, and violence it has. |

Maybe the most of the men who watch GH don't necessarily like all the mob violence, explosions, and senseless legacy character deaths...... |

Toups posted that Days lost 116,000 viewers in the 50+ demo. She has those but just doesn't post them anymore. so that explains part of Days drop. Those viewers are tuning out fast. That is a lot of households to lose in a single demo. That big of a drop in the 18-34 demo could be accounted for by a loss of a college or university tuning out, but it takes a lot of households to account for 116,000 viewers. Nielsen doesn't put boxes in nursing homes and that is about the only type of building that would account for a big group of viewers for that age group. |

THE EDGE OF NIGHT used to have mob and detective stories and was very popular with men. But it was well written and the mobsters weren't the HEROES of the show. There were some clearer lines between good and evil. THE SOPRANOS was popular but it was a character study that showed the rotting of a human soul. While it seemed to glamorize the mob, most people payed for their evil acts and the central character degenerated season by season until he became the person he hated most. His mother. GH was EXTREMEMELY popular with men when Luke and Laura had their heyday but the show refuses to hire Genie Francis back permanently to see if they can capture a LITTLE of that magic again. GH has so much potential with the cast there. I try to watch but the writing and the all encompassing emphasis on certain characters is a huge turn off. Guza and JFP have to be the biggest problem because look at what Pratt is doing for AMC. As to GL doing so well with men, THAT I can't account for. |

I think GL tends to have good ratings with males because they are viewers who grew up with the show. Most of the men I've met on-line who've watched Guiding Light started with a relative. |
