Big wow to CBS.

AMC is doing well right now but I expected this. It's going to take time. I knew GH would surge back. It's been good lately so I can actually say it's deserved this time IMO.

In regards to Days, they have to be happy. Not much happened on Days in October. Not much happened last week. Yet, Days is doing much better in demos and is holding on in HH and viewers. It lost 44,000 last week but gained back 54,000 this week. It's sort of building an audience and building demos and the show hasn't done that in a LONG time. Usually it was up big for a week or so and then they would lose it all a few weeks later.

There is something disturbing about the numbers for those clamoring for more vets. The fact that Days is holding it''s own, doing better in demos, etc with the current stories and characters dominating does not help the cause of the fans who are upset by not seeing the characters they want to see. I recognize they are losing in the older demos but the show isn't going to care when it's doing good in the so called key demos and such and doing it with the young cast and other stories currently in play.

It will be interesting to see what happens in sweeps. If Days' current pattern continues, it could be an impressive December and January for them because they usually do very well in those months and if they can carry over numbers like this or better, then it sets things up big time for them.

Boy if Days could get their demos together on the same week they could really go up.

Last week they lost 141,000 in the over 50 group. And this week they lost 100,000 viewers in the 18-49 group. So they must have gained back older viewers this week and lost in the key demo. Plus they lost 18,000 in the girls 12-17. They made up a few of them in Men where they gained 72,000. they just can't seem to get them all tuned in for the same week.

I agree.

Any positive numbers are welcome. It's also good to know soaps, particularly Days with young people, are doing so well with DVR numbers. That is the issue with the ratings. More people are watching then is being reported. I know every person can't be counted but I do feel many shows are getting hurt with the current model.

Does anyone know the exact DVR numbers? I would really like to see them and maybe see them combined with these numbers to see how much better the numbers for the soaps would look.

It is. Y&R, AMC, GH, and Days. I'm very much into GH right now. Most I've been in a long time.

Tim, Sara Bibel's blog has a run down of the current DVR's or some recent numbers for soaps. I know she said that Days gains the most, followed by Y&R with OLTL pulling the least from DVR numbers. She said on average soaps gain about 19% from DVR.

We have had our DVR for 2 weeks now. Gil got it so he could keep up with GH better. We DVR everything now. I have not watched one commmercial since we got it. I hate commercials. Used to not but in the last year I just have gotten to hate them. I got so used to watching the TV stations that don't have them and now I just want the shows to run straight through.

So I am part of the problem why advertisers don't take DVR ratings seriously. And why that even though the soaps do gain on DVR's it doesn't really help the shows to get more money.

I know that so many want to see those numbers so that just like Sara Bibel did to show their show hasn't lost that much of it's audience and stuff. And that is great, and in a few years that will probably matter but right it just looks good to us fans. They just don't matter yet for the survival of the shows.

Tim here is the stuff from Sara Bibel's blog which has turned her from a pretty universally loved blogger/writer to a very hated one from the OLTL fans who have ripped her a few new ones on several boards in the last few days.

Quote:

Maybe viewers aren’t abandoning soaps. They’re just changing the way that they watch them. I got my hands on some Live +7 ratings for the first four weeks of the TV season. These are ratings that include DVR users who watched episodes within a week of the broadcast airing. The upshot? Almost every soap’s W18-49 ratings increase by double digits in the key Women 18-49 demographic. The most DVRd soap is the young-skewing Days of Our Lives which rises a whopping 27%. The second most “improved” show is The Young & The Restless which grows by 25%. Overall, soaps ratings are 19% higher when DVR viewing is included. To put this in perspective, this more than compensates for Y&R STD -16% drop in W18-49 and makes DOOL, the only soap to maintain last year’s W18-49 average, numbers far more impressive. Interestingly, General Hospital (+22%) and All My Children (+20%) are heavily DVRd, while One Life To Live (+10%) only outperforms Guiding Light (+9%). That could indicate that a significant number of OLTL viewers are primarily AMC and GH viewers who just watch OLTL because it airs between them. This low number is especially surprising since OLTL consistently outperforms AMC. Maybe OLTL appeals to neo-luddites.

I don't understand why advertisers don't look at DVR ratings?

I read an article in the Hollywood Reporter print mag a few weeks ago about commercial viewing for DVR users and they found that around 49-50% of 18-49 viewers and 72% of people over 50 actually watch them.

Half should count for something. You would think it would even out. If a show picked up an extra million in DVR and half the viewers watched commercials, then the advertisers should count those 500,000 viewers

Rick, I read some articles that said the measure they used to get those numbers was not full proof - much the same way that Nielsens gathering of viewers is too subjective. That is the reason that advertisers prefer the HH numbers over viewers.

They are looking at viewer numbers now as well as the DVR numbers but they are still not accepting either over the Live HH ratings due to Nielsen has not come up with a better system of gathering the info.

Thanks Steve. I was actually looking for what the numbers would look like in terms of combining the traditional numbers and DVR. I would just like to see the difference.

I don't have a DVR. I'm always behind LOL. I do agree with Rick though, I remember reading the same and that is why I wonder why those don't count. Steve, I think your right in that in a few years they will matter more, although don't the ratings have a DVR category? That must mean someone cares about the numbers. I do think the show's look at it. i hope they do. That might be why we don't see as much response to the ratings as we used to. From 2000-2007, all we saw is constant regime and story changes. The show's were panicking. Now, that doesn't seem that way in general. I just wonder if they are seeing DVR and other numbers and not putting as much stock in the other numbers as they used to. I know the numbers matter to advertisers but the show's may see DVR numbers and others and think there is more of an audience and that helps them argue that point with the networks, advertisers, etc.

Those DVR numbers are impressive though. It provides some hope.

As I said in the 2 previous posts before that one is that the gathering is still subjective. The advertisers are wanting a more full proof way to learn who is and who is not watching the commercials. Yes they are willing to look at them and that is why they are being measured but advertisers are not buying into it yet.

It is the same way with the Viewers numbers - they still prefer the HH numbers as Nielsen has not come up with a way to determine the viewers yet.

right now the only full proof number that advertisers have to go on is the fact that every time that TV is turned on to their station they know that household is tuned in. Nielsen cannot tell them with 100% accuracy yet how many people are actually tuned in or if they are actually watching their commercials or not. So they look at that number that they know for sure.

DVR doesn't seem to be hurting Primetime yet because their add sales were up 9% this season vs last season.

I think tvpredictions.com says it best LOL

"People have been fast-forwarding past commercials since the 1970s when the VCR was first introduced. Although the DVR makes it easier to skip ads, it's not likely the increase will be that significant. New technology does not radically change long-existing behavior, despite what some would like us to believe. If you're a person who likes to skip ads, you'll likely do it whether you have a VCR or a DVR."

I am i that 18 to 34 range and I quit watching DOOLS. There is not a single sl that holds my interest right now. I do not recognize any of the characters....Nick Fallon is now another example of what Higley is doing to characters...its just plain weird imo.
