GET EM STEPH!!

Not sure if 100% crazy is the way to go because I don't think ratings respond to all out stunts anymore. However, the show does needs a major shakeup for sure.

Last Fall, Hogan and Ed brought that 90's feel back, only with more character-driven feel. The spoilers were more limited then usual and there was an aura of mystery in the air right up through January. I really think the show was on the right track and it started off right by killing John. That was the big bang the show needed and the reason it didn't get ratings right away was because people didn't buy it. However, as the show went on without Drake, people bought it and then they brought him back. i don't think bringing him back was the downfall but the fact that we had a regime change and things changed. I really do think Hogan and Ed were hitting their stride.

I think what Days needs is to build the stories they have and then do something HUGE in late December and something HUGE IN February. Line up all your stories and blow them apart and send characters in many directions. I think one of the biggest things you can do is kill off a major character and keep them dead. Do something gutsy.

Hell, do a Maison Blanche like story. That will save them money using one set for awhile and you can even use that kind of story to get rid of some characters you opt to cut. Maybe use a story like that to bring Belle back or something. Bo and Hope or whoever could say they haven't heard from Shelle in awhile and maybe their search leads them to a mysterious locale. You can then build up some secrets or start a mystery out of this and also maybe make this the last stand for Stefano. I'm just tossing ideas out there. I think something like this could work and spawn off new stories.

In the 90's, it wasn't just one story that did it. Buried Alive started it and then the affair and it's reveal kept fans interested enough so that when the show dropped, it didn't lose all it gained. Then Maison Blanche gave them another boost and the buildup to and Possession story gave them the HUGE boost that roped people and kept them there. After that, it was a steady stream of viewers but it wasn't just one story that did this. That was the problem with the SSK story. The show needed to make sure there was more to happen after that story but, how can you with all the interference and so on.

The show also needs to remember that many of these characters have been through so much that it's hard to be creative and new. You have to take that into account and whatever the show opts to do, it needs to make sure that they commit to a direction and have other things lined up and planned for after. It just can't be big event or story and then nothing. That does no good.

I think going after old fans is too much of a risk at this point. Just try to get any fans you can to tune in. It doesn't matter who tunes in as long as some do. I want to see the show take risks. I've wanted that forever and now is as good a time as any.

I totally agree that the serial killer story went south as soon as the "dead" became "undead." The show fell apart as soon as they all appeared alive. What a compelling story if Marlena truly had snapped and killed all of those people. With the life she has, I would have snapped as well lol
My favorite thing about the Serial Killer story was thinking, "Deidre Hall's Marlena is Reilly's pet. We know Marlena is going to stay on the show, but HOW will she get away with it?"

One theory floating around was that she would go on trial for all the murders and that a jury of her peers would, without conditions or reasons of insanity, find her not guilty. And that would have been interesting, especially if the entire town still felt she was responsible for all of it.

I actually know some ideas that were being tossed around as to what was going to happen and it would've been taken a huge risk either way but I liked it.

JER loved Marlena so she was safe for sure. I also think too that when the story changed, Doug and Alice were made victims. As I said, there was a news story reported by SON and others that Tanya Boyd (Celeste) was the next to die after Tony and that made sense given Marlena was hypnotizing her. Around that same time, there was conflicting reports of John Aniston (Victor) being out and being a victim too and then, all of a sudden, both stories disappeared from the net. A few days later, Doug was reported as next to die and Victor was said to be being killed by Jan and not Marlena. Something changed, especially when you consider Bill and Susan Hayes were promised that neither Doug or Julie would be killed off and two weeks later, it's sad Doug would be. The story got so senseless after that, None of it made sense. Doug all of a sudden recalls Marlena coming out of Tony's room. It just made no sense and the story was carefully planned up to that point. It had holes but every murder made sense until after Tony's. The story fell apart after Tony got "killed." The island story just made it worse and then even their plan B got tossed out. The island story was supposed to play out much differently but they kept shortening int and gutting it to the point where it became a really bad acid trip with no rhyme or reason to it.

I know while watching the story, as soon as Marlena was revealed as the killer, I wanted it to actually be Marlena. Not Hattie, not the Devil, not one of Stefano's clones. It had to be her. If the show only as to September 2010, they must do something now. Something huge, something to make people talk about the show, even if it angers long time fans. At this point, they have NOTHING to lose.

Without quoting your lengthy, well-written thoughts, I think that's what we're all trying to say, Phoenix.

But at the same time, I don't want the show to return to the 90's. In a way, DAYS has been perpetually trapped in that style-at least visually. The set design, lighting, and camerawork is all something out of 80's ANOTHER WORLD. Except AW was way better in the acting and writing department. On it's worst day.

Make Bo an Ennis Delmar-type. John a secret Russian spy. Marlena an amateur porn star. Nicole, a respected Senator. Sami, leaving her family and friend behind to join the Aryan Nations. Nick, taking the stalking a step further and stalking Melanie, Chelsea, and Stephanie by writing, "You're MY girl!"
You've been watching too much Nip/Tuck babe

Good point. These shows (and, in some instances, the fans) have to stop living in the past. The show has to create a new golden age for itself.

That is where JER got into trouble in his second run after the SSK/island story ended. He tried to re-create stories from his run and it did not work because the characters had already been down that road and had grew beyond those paths. That is why when I see endless "Bring Sheri Anderson back" responses on other boards, I can't go along with that thinking. I think the same thing would happen to her. Either she would alienate fans by pushing the vets aside and doing similar things with the younger characters that she did in the 80's with the current vets or she would try to hard to please fanbases and put the couples through the same sort of things and it would be the same old, same old. I think it would be bad either way with her.

LOL. I've actually only seen the show once. But doesn't Sami look like one of those moms trapped in Oregon, affilliated with a white supremacy group?

HI! I'm new and wanted to ask what was the exact reason that all the "dead" people came back. I heard it was Ken Corday, and did JER ever say where he wanted to go with the SSK s/l before KC interfered?
