I understand that you have that attitude, but I can also see why you're one of the only ones here who does. Soaps exist for fans. If viewers just simply tuned in and out on a whim, soaps would fail. Soaps need to cultivate fans, and this board is full of them - fans of certain actors or actresses, characters, writers, producers, or any combination. One thing I enjoy so much about this particular board is how truly passionate the fans here are. So if you don't feel that passion for any part of the show - well, in a way I guess I feel bad for you. I wouldn't trade the past fifteen or so years of my Days 'fandom' for anything in the world, even if it is being taken away from me now.
I feel the same way. J&M's love was special to me. They were always there for each other, a true 'Love conquers All' couple to me.

And even though J&M is the couple I've loved most thru the years, it doesn't mean I haven't enjoyed an awful lot of wonderful stories of other couples and characters. J&M were central to my enjoyment, but a huge part of that enjoyment came from the whole family feeling of the show. It always used to feel like such an ensemble family cast. I bonded with all the characters of the show.

I'll never forget Jack and Jennifer saving John from the gas chamber (even though it was fake Jack and Jennifer). Laura helping Marlena thru the whole Kristen/Susan storyline. Abe always being a shoulder to lean on. I'll never forget Marlena crying to him about how he could love both John and Roman and she couldn't. Bo standing by John when he found out he wasn't Roman. I loved Vic as an evil nemesis early on, and loved when he changed for Izzy and he bonded with John and Bo after her death, and always wanted Vic and Caroline to get together even though in truth, Vic was evil evil evil. Now I miss Vic being evil.

John bringing Hope to Bo at MB. Bo and John's talks about Hope/Billie/Marlena/Kristen. Carrie and Austin's star-crossed love with Sami paralleling J&M's and Jack and Jennifer's. Bo, Hope, and Abe helping John find Marlena when Stefano had her in Paris. The whole crew going to rescue Hope from the turret. John running to save Lexie then running up a bizzillion flights of stairs to save Shawn and Belle and Brady. John's drug addiction story was painful, but I loved Brady and Kate for helping John thru it. I cried with Hope when we lost Zack.

I loved Carrie, Belle, Brady, Eric, and even Sami sometimes because they were John and Marlena's children (in spirit they all were). I grew to love Phillip because of his love for Belle and Claire. I loved Mimi as Belle's friend.

The feelings that I had for J&M extended to most characters on the show in some fashion. Much as I love the other characters, losing J&M makes everything just unravel. They were the core for me. Even when they weren't on much, I'd watch for them and still enjoy other stories when they weren't front and center. This year has been the hardest year that I can remember. Not only did I feel that what should have been a wonderful J&M story was lost, no other stories stepped up to fill the void.

It's painful to lose J&M like this, but I am glad that I've loved them all these years. I've liked many many couples thru the years, but there was no other couple or actor that I'm anywhere close to this passionate about. Just Drake and Deidre for 22 years.

Reading this post reminds me of what is missing on Days now. The heart really is gone. I think John and Marlena were a passionate couple and I think that is the kind of fan that was drawn to them. We saw, we felt, we liked, lol. I'm glad I was one of them too.

Beautiful post, Kyrai. I think you should send that to the magazines (and certainly the show).

You know what I just dug up - I'd saved this blog post, because of the collection of "Plan to Save Days" covers. Notice anything in common among the covers?? (And there are a few others not on here.) Wonder what the 'Plan to Save Days' is now.

Although I'm sad for Days... I'm sick of this new days to be honest.

I can't help but think... if Susan Flannery is really planning a retirement... then maybe Deirdre could go to B&B ... I'd like to see her take on a new character anyways.

U think Hall will be unemployed when Days comes calling? Also, Hall is akin to Eric Braeden and Susan Lucci; this has never happened before. Drake — whatever, but Deidre Hall?
She may not want to work anywhere else. She's often said it's DAYS for her. She's turned down things in the past.

But seriously, you do NOT fire Deidre Hall. Everyone else, I can see... but there is that one or two stars that have huge saleries that are justified.

Yep. I can't get over it. She's a true icon and the face of the show. Once, when Deidre was signing autographs somewhere, there were a few girls who walked by the table where Deidre was sitting. They were speaking another language (I think Swedish). They stopped and stared at her, still having their conversation. I couldn't understand a word, but then I heard "Marlena! Marlena!" as they waved to her. As you're saying, each soap has one 'icon' like this, and I can't fathom Corday's logic in taking that away from Days.

My mom, who has never watched a single soap opera in her life, who doesn't know anything about Days at all, knows who John and Marlena are, and especially who Deidre Hall is. She is iconic, and I'm still in shock that they actually fired her.

I have got to agree with those who say firing DEE is like firing Susan Lucci....its too shocking for words. Yesterday at work I let all the J&M fans know what is going on...They could not believe it. They think I am joking. I told them to read the mags when they come out. TPTB better get ready for a hell of alot of mail.

LOL! No problem. I agree. The best part about that article is that the commentary (while funny!) is hardly needed; these Corday quotes are almost fitting for a Jon Stewart segment, in that they just speak for themselves.

"SLOANE: I've gotten a lot of flak from fans because you've said in the past that they'd (the core popular characters) be back on-screen, but they really weren't. So are you saying that yes, they will be back in a regular capacity?

CORDAY: Yes."

Yes, that's exactly what I was trying to say in the longer post I wrote in the SOD thread, that the news is going to come out slowly. We (the online fans) learned first, then magazine readers will, and then general viewers who will see the promos, then viewers who just see the last scenes themselves and think "they're not really fired, are they?". I agree, TPTB are going to get a lot of mail - for the next few months, at least.

Even Perez Hilton posted about Dee's firing.

Marlena And John Get Axed From Days

Here's some news that's sure to send housewives across the nation into waling fits of despair.

Even daytime TV is feeling the economic pinch!

Days of Our Lives' stars Deidre Hall and Drake Hogestyn are getting the axe, victims of the show's recent massive budget cuts.

That's right, they've been laid off!

Famous for their portrayals of the popular Marlena and John, the tempestuous lovers will "be happily reunited after a long period of angst and separation and will be off-screen after January for an unknown period of time," according to exec producer Ken Corday.

Corday adds that it was a "very tough decision to make."

Days fans won't take this quietly!!!

I'm just numb to all things DAYS, at this point. After years of being burned by the show, I think I've finally reached the point where I genuinely just don't care anymore.

It's a sad, sad time.

Aww. How adorable! The thought of Deidre not being on Days anymore is to hard to imagine. :(

It's also in the New York Post. Deidre and Drake are definitely known outside the soap world, Deidre especially. I think if you stop any random person on the street and ask "Who's the star of Days of Our Lives?", they'd say "Deidre Hall", even if they've never watched an episode.
