GL's GRANT ALEKSANDER RETURNS HOME

The wait is finally over, GL fans! Grant Aleksander will reprise his role as Phillip Spaulding, beginning in January.

"I've agreed to a long-term contract to make a commitment to be on the show for a while, and hopefully it all works out that way," the actor tells Digest. "These are uncertain times for a lot of shows, but it's certainly my intention to be around for a while.

What brought Aleksander back? "Jill Lori Hurst and I have been close for a long time and we've stayed in touch over the years. She called me at the end of the summer and said, 'We really miss you and we could use you. Is it a good time?' I said 'You know, I miss you guys, so why don't we talk?' We did, and here we are," he explains. "It's an easy decision right now because everything in life is timing. I had always hope that there'd be a time that was right for me and right for the show to add another chapter to all of this. My relationship with the show goes back to 1982, so it's a long one and I love the show very much. I understand that, technically, things are being done in a very different way, which I'm sure will present new challenges, but I'm looking forward to that.

Several GL cast members are already rolling out the welcome mat for the Springfield favourite. "I've talked to Beth Chamberlin (Beth) and Tina Sloane (Lillian) and Ron Raines (Alan) and Justin Deas (Buzz) and Mikey (Michael O'Leary, Rick) and people I've remained in close touch with, and who have all encouraged me to come back for a long time," he smiles. "I miss them. I think they're all pretty happy."

Aleksander, who has not yet taped his first scenes, admits that he doesn't know the details around Phillip's much anticipated return. The character was last seen on screen back in 2004, before his presumed death. "I think it's a long arc story that they intend to tell." he says. I'm just going to sort of wait and find out along with everybody else, but I'm looking forward to hearing what it is that they've got planned, and I think it's going to be fun.

Aleksander does hope, however, that it will tie up a lot of loose ends for longtime viewers. "Phillip is either the father of or has been married to everybody in town, so he connects to a lot of people!" the actor laughs. "I've always been grateful for the support I've had among the fans, particularly for a character that's not always a good guy. That being said, I think he's always been an interesting character and one that's good for generating a lot of story. My greatest wish in this is that having this character back allows them to tell stories that they otherwise wouldn't be able to and hopefully, it's a good thing for the show and helps it to stick around for a while longer."

"Long-term" meaning until someone finally decides to put this show out of its misery.

As far as I'm concerned, the real GL died a long time ago. The crap that's airing now just happens to have the same title.
