Same thing with Erica Kane. Yeah, she is the heart of the show, but hasn't she been married like 12 times? Raped? Kidnapped? "Dead?" Her daughter is a lesbian. They just all run out of story. 30 Years is a long time! haha
It's not always about story. It's about the fact that fans care about these characters, regardless of now much they've "been there, done that."

I think it was a big mix of a lot of things.

J&M have been through it all. They're a really hard couple to write for. All of their best possibility storylines involve a new character secretly playing an old character or a return of an old fav, which is expensive. Anything else, they've all been through, and it's boring so as much as it sucks...I can see why they did it to J&M.

Exactly.

Hit the nail on the head, King. And I agree. I think Drake and Dee woke all the vets in the industry up. Vets have been fired before but not like this.

I also agree it's about the story. Fans may care about the characters but soaps, especially Days, have kept people around long enough just because of who they are. What good is it if the characters have been through so much that you can't do much with them? I mean, it doesn't help when they have a fanbase who limits the writers and what they can do that is acceptable greatly.

Having said that, I don't see Corday doing this unless he absolutely had to or was forced to or unless it's a scare tactic and he will just bring them back soon.

Haha.

Well, if money wasn't an issue, it would be great to have Suzanne Rogers and Dee and Drake and Lucci and Slezak around forever. Frontburner, backburner, what have you. If there was money to burn.

I *DO* think there is a solid argument to say that the rest of the cast on paper has more story than J&M and the vets. Do I think Shelly Hennig, Darrin Brooks, Corday, and Higley can make magic together? No, but the characters in capable hands, if the stars all align, could carry the show well enough I think. But it would take a complete creative overhaul of the show which we are clearly never getting...ever.

Well, we might as well get rid of Frances Reid too, while we're at it, since nothing can be done with her story-wise.

Let's be honest...Alice is pretty much nonexistent at this point.

I agree.

Not saying what Days is doing will work but it's not like they have anything to lose.

In regards to Frances, I would think they pay her when she works at this point so that isn't the same. Either that or her guarantee is so low it doesn't hurt the budget. Meanwhile, people like Drake and Dee make tons and we see them in the same stories over and over again because that is really all their fanbase craves and they've been through enough as it is.

Yeah, I mean, she's pretty much gone, as well, although at least then it's kind of mutual since I am sure she doesn't want to be working a ton due to her health.

Well, it's up to her.

The show has written her in at least five times that we actually know of only for her not to be able to show. She's written into the Christmas show and it seems she couldn't make that either.

The show wants to use her but it's up to her if she is able. If not, they just do their best. It's so sad.
