TV Guide: 20 Years at No. 1 (Y&R) by Michael Logan; 2009 Previews Included!

This week's TV Guide includes an article about the fact that on December 5th, Y&R will have achieved 20 years as the #1 soap in the ratings.

The article describes the fact that at this time in 2007, Lynn Marie Latham, "an audacious and erratic ayatollah", was producing the show. She destroyed the show's history, caused the show's talent to leave, and she hired her family and friends as writers. However, she "was not allowed back" after the strike, and the show is now produced by Maria Arena Bell and Paul Rauch, who Michael Logan describes as "a match made in heaven".

Bell tells Logan that her father's vision for Y&R is being honored, and that the feeling on the set is similar to what is was in the 80's and 90's: "a sense that there is real leadership". She says everyone has relaxed because of this, but the show is trying to win back viewers by "giving them what our research says they want: romance and the characters they love and the production values they've come to adore."

Logan explains that a "Days of Our Lives style" firing is not in the works, and Bell says that they'd all "go down kicking and screaming" if that happened, and that they consider themselves fortunate that they don't have to make those types of decisions at Y&R.

The article then gives some previews for 2009:

- Katherine "will face major jeopardy in her return to Genoa City".

- The show will be "rocked by the stunning death of one of [the] core characters".

- There are no plans to bring back Victoria Rowell (Drucilla).

- Lauralee Bell (Christine) will be returning next year.

- There will be a "major, old-fashioned soap wedding" in the spring.

I'm guessing Brad is the one who dies.

Those previews sound great! Except for no Dru return. Boo!

Let's all raise a glass for a good old-fashioned soap wedding!

When was the last time we had one of those, anyway?

I'm really looking forward to Katherine's trek back to Genoa City. I think it's awesome that a person as "old" as Jeanne Cooper is getting all this awesome material.

Brad is probably the "stunning death." I'm not too sad about it, LoL.

Wonder why Cricket returns?

Thanks for posting, Ellie!
