From TV Guide Print Please do not copy paste, link only Best Soap: Young & The Restless, Like the proverbial phoenix rising from the ashes, it has emerged as triumphant after two horrifying years of unbearable crapola. Kudos to CBS and Sony for finally waking up, dumping the peeps responsible and handing the show over to Maria Arena Bell, the daughter-in-law of Y&R's late, exalted creator, Bill Bell. She has brought fire, heart and intelligence back to Genoa City. Is the show Bill Bell excellent? No. But what is anymore? Best Episode: The Plane Crash (Days of Our Lives) So raw, real and terrifying I found myself gasping for air right along with the passengers. Go figure: The hour was stunningly produced by Ed Scott, who would soon be fired. Best Actor: Eric Braeden (Young & The Restless) The balliest guy in soaps, was astounding at the tantrum-prone tycoon who went into psychotic overdrive when his trophy wife was killed in a limo crash. Best Actress: Melody Thomas Scott (Young & The Restless) Scott was a revelation as Victor's emotionally battered soulmate, a recoverving alcoholic who succumbed to a Mexican booze bender and then an outta-nowhere tyrst with her good buddy Paul--all because she can't seem to live with, or without, the dastardly Mr. Newman. It's hard to believe this duo is approaching 30 years as a daytime supercouple, and they remain as riveting and dizzyingly dysfunctional as ever. Best Supporting Actor: Bruce Weitz (General Hospital) You probably thought this cold, uber-bloody sudser didn't need anymore mobsters. Well, fuhgeddaboutit! The former Hill Street Blues star is over-the-top terrific as a demented don with an unstoppable yap. He makes me glad I own a T.V. Best Supporting Actress: Peggy McCay (Days of Our Lives) Often left on the sidelines, this trusty vet moved me to tears when her character was suddenly widowed. McCay's unfussy style is pure, poignant and impossibly deep. The finest surgeon in the world can't cut as close to the bone as this lady can. Best Guest Stint: Shirley Jones (Days of our Lives) Jones apperaed on the show as an ex nun with a scandalous past and reminds us why she has an Oscar at home. Best Scene: Jesse and Angie's reunion (All My Children) The marvelously mushy reunion of All My Children's Angie and her supposedly dead Jesse. Filmed at a vintage train stop in PA, it was like old-time movie magic. Man of the Year: Drake Hogestyn (Days of our Lives) He started the year fired and ended it by being fired again. But, in between, this heroic heartthrob -- known more for his dynamic eyebrow than his acting chops, returned to Salem as a sardonic, screamingly funny robokiller and proved he's a real contender. Woman of the Year: Jeanne Cooper (Young and the Restless) What a joy it is to still see this 80 year old still at the top of her game. And she finally won an Emmy after eleven times! Naturally, she used her precious moments at the podium to complain about Y&R going high-def. Quote La Cooper. "it's a bitch, isn't it!? Greatest Performances of 2008: Elizabeth Hubbard (As the World Turns) Ally Mills (Bold & The Beautiful) Tristan Rogers (General Hospital: Night Shift) Ben Masters (Passions) Ted Shackelford (Young & The Restless) |

I agree with most of these. You could've went OLTL or Y&R for best soap so I'm ok with that. So glad Days got recognition for the plane crash stuff. That was the best episode of the year, hands down, for any soap IMO because of the impact. You were literally taken for a ride for an hour and it was terrifying and felt more like a film then a soap. It reminded me of GH's Metrocourt hostage situation last year. You just couldn't look away. Peggy McCay deserves those kudos. She deserves an Emmy nod for her work this year, especially since she actually had material this year. |

I agree with all these except Melissa Fumero should be listed in best performances. |

I'm sure people are going to jump all over me for this, but I wasn't really impressed by Peggy McKay's performance. I remember watching and wondering if she was going to do anything more than having her eyes tear up. Now, part of this is that her character was shortchanged in terms of the writing, no question. But to me, she didn't really convey what I've (unfortunately) had the opportunity to see with my family and friends when someone of her age loses his/her longtime other half. |

I see where you are coming from Ellie, but I think it's just a matter of preference. I prefer subdued performances. The Eyes and facial emotion for me, is what makes me think someone is a great actor. I remember watching Susan Lucci scream and whither around on Mona's casket and felt nothing because IMO it was way too over the top. Edited by Rick, Dec 16 2008, 08:56 PM.

I thought Peggy's portrayal of Caroline's grieving was really realistic. |

^ And I understand what you're saying too, Rick. To me, sometimes subdued performances are necessary, but overall I find myself thinking, does this look like what would really happen if a person were in that situation? I didn't see the Lucci scene you're talking about, but doesn't sound real at all to me. Peggy McKay just looked a little too subdued; I think a person in that situation would be much more affected by what had happened. But again, just my opinion! Either way, I am very glad they gave her the opportunity to actually do more than serve pie! |

Braeden and Scott are two of the most overrated actors daytime has ever produced. Scott, especially, goes way over the top during her performances. I disagree with most of these choices. Edited by DolceDiMera, Dec 16 2008, 09:14 PM.

Since I don't watch Y&R, Logan mentioning so many Y&R things goes right over my head. Hard to comment on a program, I see a few times a year. With Days, well I wasn't blown away by Peggy McKay either, and I tend to like her. The plane crash episode was pretty much the best show they had in 2008. |

Well, after last year, I have hope they may get more then a token nod. Ed Scott was here for half the year and I think they can still get recognized, despite all the scandal. Not to mention Gary Tomlin is well-liked around the industry too so I think Days can score more then one. I do agree that her grief was realistic. She broke down in a big way when she first learned about his death at the hospital and then she was rather subdued after that. She went into the mode of being there for her children too. I thought she hit it perfectly. |

I wonder if Gary and Corday will want to send in one of Ed's shows. Just a thought. |

Hmm...I would think they will. They would want the publicity any way they could get it. I mean, last year they submitted Hogan's work after they axed him and his team so I don't think it makes a difference. Granted, the scandal may play a role but I think they will want the recognition. |

Yes but Hogan wrote almost the whole year (officially). I can really see both sides of it. It's just that Corday's ego gets in the way... well, almost always, lol. So I can see him deciding to just ignore anything Ed did. Of course, I hope they submit Ed's episodes - imo that's their only chance of winning. |
