Ali is a POPULAR actress, not necessarily a good actress. She screams, yells, no subtly in her acting. She's good when they write for her, but that's why I turned off Days last year. She was on ALL THE TIME and had crappy writing. Good actresses are able to add to the material given (whether its crap) and I dont see that w/Ali.

Another factor is that she's always on so people tune off because of that too! I wish she would just take a break from Days and get some acting lessons.

The thing about Ali is that when she was hired, she was AMAZING for her age. I dare anybody to find somebody else her age who made such an impact from Day One on the audience from the last ten years on any show. They're few and far between.

But (in my humble opinion), she basically just hit a wall somewhere around Year Five or Six, and just stopped growing as an actress. It's like she's been running in place, or for that matter, at a standstill, for the last decade.

I really wish she had continued to take acting classes, honing her craft, growing and evolving. She should be a lot better for somebody who's been doing this as long as has. But I feel she (like a lot of Days actors) just grew complacent over the years.

I still have nightmares of her during the SSK, screaming at John, screaming at Lucas, screaming at Bo, screaming, screaming, screaming all the time.

Which was worse - screaming Sami of 2005 or crying Sami of 2007?

*shudder*

You and me both.

I think I would rather listen to nails on a chalkboard than any more of her screeching, whining, and "crying".

I really think that sometimes it takes the right acting partner to help you step it up ... I think for both Ali and now Ari - James Scott has been like their muse - they both stepped up their game.

I think she's pretty one note, and that one note she plays very well. Of course, I'm talking about the bitch note. She was great as a teen bitch, but as she grew older and as Sami grew older, it just looked ridiculous to have her that way. It seems that Ali excels at the immature side of the Sami character, and like him or not, JER wrote to her strengths.

She never had the range of say a young Sarah Brown or a young Heather Tom, who both at a young age handled much more complex and layered daytime roles, and of course excelled at playing the bitch.

Brimike, I tend to agree with most of your posts, but I really don't agree with this at all. I've personally felt that Ali was miscast as Sami from the beginning. When I think of some pivotal Sami scenes in '93 and '94, Ali's acting really falls flat. When Sami saw J&M in the conference room, Ali just stared at them, blinked, and looked like she didn't want to ruin her lip gloss. When Sami confronted Marlena and told Marlena that she'd seen what went on in the conference room, she just raised her voice and yelled her lines the entire time, and she didn't shed one tear. When Sami had to tell Abe that Alan raped her, there was not much emotion on her part either.

I don't remember her making the 'impact' you're saying she made, but I do think the character of Sami made an impact, given that she was such a villain even as a teen. I think it was a bold writing decision to have Sami be the one to catch J&M, and imo that was the cause of any buzz early on.

I think that Ali is adequate as "scheming Sami", and she carried that one note through the Sami-Lucas-Austin-Carrie 'quadrangle' . But aside from that, I've never felt she was even a passable actress in any area.

I think those early Sami days had to do with the writing and the newness of a "bad" Brady. I wish this actress was better because the character's not going anywhere. I rather watch the SL, then mute it or FF it.
As for JS/EJ making her better, I didnt see that at all. I think the opposite. He works better w/actors that "bring it." Look back at when he worked with Kate, he was so good and he's really good w/Lexie, Stefano, Tony and Nicole.

I think Ali has come a long since she first started. I loathed her acting when she first started. And now she has imo, grown into a wonderful actress.

I still love her, she's a great actress in my book. I don't think she overacts at all. I think its according to who's she's working with, like Gina said. But people do have the right like and dislike whom they so chose. But you have to admit, some people take it a bit far. If you don't like the acting then don't like the acting, but I think when people start to attack the actress then it goes too far. Not saying that anyone does this here. But their are some people that does tend to do it, this just from observation, as I lurk around internet.

AS plays a schemer very well...very sneaky...like with EJ in early 2007. When she played him a bit, she was good at that.
Anything else, she sucks at. Very one note actress.

She can't cry worth shit. She yells entirely too much to convey emotion. I never felt any hotness to her love scenes, and she and Lucas used to make me cringe with all the slurping. And the whole Rafe thing has me feeling like she is phoning it in.

I feel like ever since she got another job, he daytime performance has suffered...possible exception of Colleen. It was nice to see her act different, but you could tell someone worked with her.

I was a diehard fan of AS for so long, but not so much anymore. Big disappointment.

The actor is the one who is acting, so of course if you don't like the acting, you criticize the actress. If you put yourself out there, it comes with showbiz. And I am sure with the loads of money she is pulling in, it doesn't keep her up at night.

And AS doesn't get half the crap that other Days actors may get...or writers. In fact, I haven't seen too much crap about AS that is truly insulting. Her acting may suck at times, but if that is the worst they say, she is doing pretty good. Ask Dena or Nadia.

Wow, once again this place dissolves into the predictable Ali Sweeney hate.

Shocking.

Just thought I'd give my opinion on the "Ali debate" since I know everybody's DYING to know!!! (insert sarcasm emoticon here):

While I personally think Ali does a great job acting, I think she's been given some LOUSY material over the past couple of years. I think she does her best work opposite James Scott (just personal opinion here) or Joe Mascolo. (Ali and Ari play well off of each other too) I think her work opposite Bryan Datillo often seemed over the top and forced. I think she plays the role of "bitch" as good as any of 'em. I think she struggles the most when it comes to crying.......or those types of scenes.......those would be in my opinion where she has problems if any. Overall I think she can act as well as any of the other female cast members on Days (including Dee Hall IMO)

Now to be fair, I think Ari does a great job as well. I think Ari can also be over the top sometimes. I think her opposite James Scott kind of falls flat IMO. I think she does handle the crying scenes probably a little better than Ali. I personally don't like the way her character is being written at all right now. Nicole is best when she is snarky and bitchy. This weepy needy Nicole, for myself, is a turn off to the character.

It is interesting to me that in my view, one actress opposite JS comes alive and the other falls flat. I know that not everyone agrees with my take on this and that's okay.

So I guess what I'm trying to say is, that to me, both Ali and Ari are exceptionally talented actresses who have been given some crappy material to work with. Sometimes they shine anyway...................sometimes not so much.

Therein lies the beauty of the DR!

We are all entitled to express our opinions of the actors, actresses, and their respective shows; as long as we don't insult other DR members.... :)

I'll credit the improvement in Arianne's acting to the lessons she took for two years, her dedication to her craft, and her interpretation/comprehension of her character's motivation before I credit it to being in the presence of James Scott. They play off of each other well but I think she does well opposite other actors and actresses, too. Her best performances imo were during her miscarriage scenes where she was playing opposite Eric Martsolf (and you know what I think about Martsolf's acting). Even when she's playing opposite weak actors, she does a fine job,
Sweeney and Zucker both have strengths and weaknesses but I think Zucker's performances are more compelling. Sweeney has a very limited range and after 15 years hasn't yet mastered nuance. Less can be more! Zucker does a nice job with the tortured heroine material, the scheming bitch role, the temptress, and has great comedic timing. Sweeney does well in light hearted family scenes, the manipulating bitch scenes, and sometimes she is good with comedy. The one thing that bugs me about both of them is their yelling. It tends to sound over the top.
