Matt Smith Named As New Doctor Who

Posted Image

A relatively unknown British actor has been named as the successor to David Tennant's Doctor Who role.

Matt Smith landed the biggest part on U.K. television as the time traveller after Tennant announced he was stepping down from the role last year.

He says, "I feel proud and honoured to have been given this opportunity to join a team of people that has worked so tirelessly to make the show so thrilling.

"David Tennant has made the role his own, brilliantly, with grace, talent and persistent dedication. I hope to learn from the standards set by him. The challenge for me is to do justice to the show's illustrious past, my predecessors, and most importantly, to those who watch it. I really cannot wait."

Smith will make his debut on the show in 2010.

He looks really emo here, but the other picture of him with the Tardis looks MUCH more believable.

I'm still really skeptical over how young he is, but I have complete faith in Moffat as a writer and showrunner (he hasn't let me down yet), so I have complete faith that Smith will somehow fill Tennant's huge shoes.

I didn't think Eccleston could ever be replaced, and boy, was I wrong. So I'm happy to give Smith a shot.

He does seem to get younger with every regeneration, doesn't he?

Totally showing off my geek here. LOL!

It's okay Mike, let your geek light shine!

I am a little skeptical too, but he looks much better in the link you posted. Absulutely agree about Eccleston. I was disappointed when Tennant took over, but he really grew on me. Of course Tom Baker will forever be my favorite of all time.

Yes, it does seem that the doctors have been getting younger

If in not mistaken Davison was the youngest until now. I think he was 31 when he started.

Baker is brilliant, and in my youth, he's definitely my favorite. But Tennant has found a... how should I put this?... crushworthy place in my heart, now that I'm in my thirties. LOL!

You think I'm geeking out now? Just wait until BSG comes back... :-D

There's no such thing as an irreplaceable Doctor. Tennant did a great job, though I think most of his run suffered from RTD's often silly and overly childish writing. I loved Eccleston and I wish we'd gotten more of his tortured Doctor (thanks BBC for screwing that up), but Peter Davison will always be my favourite Doctor. With Tom Baker (the Hinchcliff era), Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, and of course William Hartnell following.

I'm looking to the new Doc, and the new regime. I'm more excited for the new production team than I am for the new Doc. RTD had definitely become stale, and if John Nathan-Turner proved anything its that anyone at the helm of the franchise for too long will eventually weaken it, no matter how great they start out.

Don't even get me started on what RTD had to pass as a long story.

I'm so excited for Moffat to take over, I can't even tell you.

The thing that made the last series as enjoyable as it was definitely was the incredible addition of Catherine Tate's Donna Noble. Her non-romantic (finally!) chemestry with the Doctor rose above some awful episodes (like every ep of series 4 up untill The Unicorn & The Wasp, with the exception of Planet of the Ood). Turn Left IMO was one of the best episodes of the entire new series, and Tate was amazing in it.

Donna definitely kicked Rose's ass.

I can never hate the man like some do. If it were not for him, Doctor Who wouldnt have come back. For that alone fans owe him alot, and seem to forget that. And Torchwood has been brilliant.

He started out great. Series 1 was brilliant TV. Series 2-4 were alot weaker, with the exception of select episodes. Series 2 especially.

But, other than the Daleks they've managed to screw up the returns of the classic series' monsters. Especially the Cybermen. And the companions constantly trying to bed the Doctor was very annoying. Martha Jones particularly was just made pathetic because of it. And the companion families - I hope we're done with those.
