Danny: Well he certainly pulled a David Cook. Taking a Mariah Carey song and making it his own. He did great but I have to agree with Simon. It wasn't special and the end was the best part. Plus, I love how they don't get on him for tackling Mariah without going to the big glory notes. I'm already starting to dislike him though. It's starting to be like David Archuleta for me. I liked Archie in Hollywood and as soon as we hit this round, he fell out of favor with me. The only difference is Danny's background is far more tragic and he's clearly not as humble and shy. The pimpage is already on overdrive. He got the last slot and we have to be bombarded with images of his wife in every intro on him. It's sad but come on. Stop exploiting it. See, this is why I don't want to know too much about the contestants. Let's get to know them through their music and save the rest until top 12 at least. He is getting awful arrogant too IMO. You can tell he knows he's good and that he has at least a top 5 slot in the bag. That is far different then Archie.

Kenny is right. Tonight he was annoying. Did anyone catch how annoyed he was at Ryan before the commercial? The look on his face was pretty telling. He got a bit testy with Ryan after the commercial too, saying he just wanted to find out. Then the way he ignored Tatiana at first. I get she wasn't liked but come on. Have a heart. Between all that, the over the top pimping of him, the exploiting of his wife's death, his arrogance, and the stuff we are finding out about him, I'm down on him.
Holy crap, Phoenix! Your post is a novel! LoL

But I pretty much agree with this. Not only did he close the show last night, he also closed it tonight. He got the pimp spot two nights in a row. I also feel like they put him at the end against Tatiana for two reasons:

1.) Producers wanted his fans nervous and worried. They want his fans to avoid complacency and vote, vote, vote.

2.) The Tatiana angle. Lots of people wanted to see her gone. By placing Danny against her at the end of the show, it sends a subliminal message to viewers that Danny's the one to thank for Tatiana going bye-bye, since it was him vs. her. In other words, it was an effort to drum up even more of a fanbase for Danny with the people who hate Tatiana.

I'm telling you, these producers are biased and they don't do anything without having a specific reason for it. Regardless, I like Danny alot, but the pimping turns me off EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. Plus the whole dead wife thing is getting tacky and creepy to me, and obviously he supplied the producers with all the photos and videos of her, so...

I usually like the group numbers, but the one tonight was terrible! That had to be one of the worst ones I have ever seen on AI; it was horrible song choice.

Danny probably should have hugged Tatiana before being happy and cheering for himself, but it really didn't bother me. He did hug her right afterwards, and she just kind of stood there.

This season sucks so far. I don't like the new top 36 arrangement and it sounded like karaoke fever last night! And why did Danny's friend Jamar get booted before the final pick? He had flawless performances in Hollywood and he has a funky demeanor that is marketable. I'm starting to hate this show. It's so suspect and fake now.

Love your weekly detailed AI posts Phoenix. :)

There is only one thing that I have to disagree with you on. Danny didn't pull a true David Cook. Yes he made a Mariah Carey song "his own", but he did no different than if Mariah was standing on that stage singing it. The only difference was that it was a male voice singing. David Cook would have taken that song from a ballad to a rock song.

Danny is very much Archie this year, but have to agree that it is different. While all the David's shyness and shock bothered me, I do honestly believe he really was a more naive than they wanted us to believe. I never believed that he really understood the message behind those songs. He was trained to perform, but one-on-one he was pretty clueless.

Can't wait for Michael's album and wish too they would have shown the full performance of David Cook and Carrie Underwood.

Sucked to see Ricky and Anoop not make it. I'm sure they'll be there for the Wild Card group.

I liked Tatiana and Alexis the most. I don't even REMEMBER the other girls, except the brunette who sang "Every Little Thing" by the Police and got her ass handed to her by the judges.

I wasn't surprised at all who made it through.

I have to say, I like Kara as a judge. She's very well spoken, she makes good, valid points and she doesn't act crazy/drunk (Paula), overly mean (Simon, although I usually agree with him) or annoying (Randy).

If the judges were just Kara and Simon, that would make my day.

I totally DISAGREE with you, Rick and Tim, and agree with KENNY on this Alexis. God, what a little troll she is. Dirty? Soul? GMAB! She sounds like a whiny little rat! Haha. This was the first time I heard her though.

Michael Sarver is so sexy! I agree there, Rick. Yummykins!

Gokey. Yeah, we pretty much knew that was coming........

The best part of last night was seeing my second favorite Idol ever....CARLY SMITHSON!!

So, we have two more weeks of picking the three a week...then how does the wildcard round work? Do all 27 people not picked come back?

Ok I'm with the camp that doesn't understand the Alexis Grace/Kelly Clarkson comparison AT ALL. If anything, I could see them comparing her to Nikki McKibbin (my fave Idol EVER), given the similarities in their voices and her new pink hair. Problem is Nikki was a FAR better singer. I thought Alexis Grace's performance was WEAK and she just lucked out because the other girls sucked worse and America hates Tatiana. Too bad though, because Tatiana was hands down the best female vocalist of the night.

Jackie sucked, but I just love her to pieces so I hope she makes the wild card round. Stevie was atrocious and flat, the Every Little Thing girl is gorgeous and has a chest that doesn't quit but picked a terrible song for her voice. I really felt bad for her when the judges laid into her- you could see her heart breaking all over her face. It was upsetting to watch. But good for her for coming out the next night and admitting her mistake. Though I don't think she's the best, I 'd love to see them give her another shot. The other girls just weren't memorable to me- the 'Natural Woman' girl just didn't have the voice to kill that song. Memo to the girls: DON'T pick songs that Kelly Clarkson sang if you can't do them as well or better than her.

As for the guys, I agree that Rikky Brady was awesome and so deserves another shot in the Wild Card round. The Michael Jackson song was weak and the country singer wasn't that great, though I want to make out with & bend over for that cocky little stud. Love the dimples. Anoop was solid, but not outstanding- his performance wasn't nearly colorful enough to get my attention. I wasn't overly impressed with Michael Sarver either- he was okay. He picked the right song though, I'll give him that.

Danny Gokey has been my favorite since I saw his audition. That audition was easily the best one I saw through those weeks and he hasn't let me down since. I thought his rendition of Hero was excellent, if not his greatest performance. I don't like how they're pimping him but he really doesn't have much control over that. As for everything going on with his dead wife, it's neither here nor there to me. He is obviously still experiencing much grief and I can't blame him for using his notoriety to start some kind of foundation in her honor. Team Gokey all the way.

Next week should be good too, as that Adam guy with the black hair has one of the most unique and outstanding voices I've heard thusfar in the competition. He will definitely be tough to beat.

Kelly Clarkson was always classy...Alexis really just reminds me of trash, if I'm being honest.

Yup. I have a bad feeling we're stuck with Alexis for the long haul. And how 'classy' of you to edit your original post King. :tounge:

I don't think so. They'll only pick a select few for the Wild Card group.

Ricky Braddy better be one of those chosen few. I'm still upset at the way they screwed him over. They didn't show him once in Hollywood -- not once. Apparently they couldn't take two minutes away from the craziness of Tatiana and Norman Gentle to show Ricky, who's obviously one of the best this season.

Unlike every other person who sang Tuesday, Ricky had absolutely no airtime prior to his performance. Nobody knew him. He was amazing, but nobody knew who he was. Then they went on to give him one of the worst slots of the night. He was the second person to sing in the first hour -- so far from the pimp spot, it's ridiculous.

He was pretty much doomed to failure because they set him up for it.

Danny Gokey, Alexis Grace and Michael Sarver were interviewed yesterday on Ryan Seacrest's radio show. I thought these Q&A's were pretty interesting for Gokey...

Does he feel like he’s been pushed to the forefront by producers? "I do feel like that, that I was highlighted. There’s no gettin’ around that. And I can say this: I’m grateful. And I know (sighs) Y’know, unfortunately, it’s a bummer when people are just real mad about it and, y’know, I had nothing to do with it and hope people can see past that."

On whether or not his backstory is getting overwhelming and annoying: "It’s only been seven months since she’s passed. And, y’know, it’s not that I throw it in people’s faces, but I get asked about it all the time. It weighs on my mind a lot, though. Because I’d–y’know, honestly, this is a sob story I don’t want. But it is shaping my life. And it’s causing hope for a lot of people and not only that, it’s causing hope for my life."

Wants to lighten up, aware that people are getting tired of his story: "Well, I feel like I’ve just gotten my message across. But now I wanna, I wanna lighten up and just have a little fun with it and enjoy the ride. I don’t know, I guess maybe sometimes the, the consensus is that people are getting tired of my story or, y’know, or whatever, and y’know, that’s totally fine. Uh, but I wanna be able to, y’know appeal to people on a fun level too, as opposed–y’know–and also in the deeper level that I showed ‘em."

LoL, the guy reminds me of Ryan from Big Brother 9 with all the y'knows.

I can see myself growing very tired of the whole "hope and inspiration" thing. It's getting old already. Do I think that his story is a hopeful one? Yes. Inspiring? Definitely. But he's not the only contestant with a hopeful future. We're looking for the next musical superstar here -- not the next inspirational speaker, LoL.

I just don't want him to become self-important, because the moment a person becomes aware of their own hype and starts buying into it is the moment they start to lose their shine.

Here's Danny, Alexis and Michael being interviewed on a local Fox News station.

Sorry, Michael. You're not an "R&B soul person." You are not a member of the "blue eyed soul patrol." Embrace the path to country or you'll fall out of favor with the country voters quickly.

I think that is one of the reasons I like David Cook so much as was really touched when he won last year. That was an inspirational story for me. Here was a guy that just wanted to sing and did whatever to be able to do it. I was just hooked in on his journey last season and to finally have that success he worked so hard for.

Thanks Angie for putting up the clip of Carrie and David. They perform very nicely together and are cute together. Carrie Underwood is another that I am amazed at her success. She is definitely the story they want on AI. The small town girl that just sang because she enjoyed it and has this amazing voice. You would think she has been doing this forever but it has only been about 3 years since she won yet look at what she has accomplished. And she did it without feeling the need slut it up or hit the magazine shame spiral. Good for her.
