USA Today

'American Idol' aims to enliven its upcoming live shows

Simon Cowell's critical eye goes beyond American Idol singers. He says this season's first live outing was "a bit flat."

Last Tuesday's show "didn't quite gel. There were some audio issues. The lighting felt too light, too daytime," the Idol judge says. "We know what went wrong and what we're going to do to fix it."

Last week's singers don't get off the hook, either. Cowell praised some performers, calling Alexis Grace a welcome "dark horse," but says "there are better singers to come" as 12 compete again tonight (Fox, 8 ET/PT) and Tuesday.

Overall, Cowell is happy with Season 8, saying changes to the semifinal structure, including the return of judges' wild-card picks, will yield better finalists. In next Thursday's wild-card round, the judges bring back eight or nine singers — not necessarily just from the semifinals — and pick three to round out the Top 12. "I think when we put the 12 together, there will be more personality, more interest and just more diversity," says Cowell, who wouldn't specify standouts.

The new structure, which eliminates a much higher percentage of semifinalists each week, raises the stakes and tension, Fox reality chief Mike Darnell says. He says that helped increase last week's vote tally by 10 million over last year.

Darnell also likes the return of the wild card, which saved Clay Aiken and Jennifer Hudson in the past. Besides top singers, he promises "something big" for the finals. (Don't forget the big surprise/twist that he teased several weeks ago. He said it'll have everyone talking at the watercooler and they'll reveal it at Top 12. Personally, I think the judges will choose who goes home out of the Bottom 2 this season. In other words, they can rig the winner much easier.)

Cowell says new judge Kara DioGuardi is doing fine, but live shows are a bigger challenge. "(She'll) find it difficult compared to the auditions because there's no editing. What you say is what you say."

Speaking of speaking, the addition of a fourth judge meant last week's critiques went on too long. "I'd almost fallen asleep at one point because it was taking so long to get to me," he says. "So we're going to have to speed things up a little bit."

So they'll be bringing back people who were cut in Hollywood, as well. Which means Jamar Rogers will come back and make Top 12. Obviously. That's why his elimination in Hollywood made no sense -- they were setting up for his triumphant return.

The wild card round is going to be PACKED. We already have Anoop and Ricky (who are both considered wild card locks) and now Jamar. You know he's coming back, LoL. That's not even counting the people who've yet to perform from Groups 2 and 3.

I hope Jamar comes back as a wild it would make me so damm happy. I just loved him. I'm probably going to miss a little tonight today is Ash Wednesday. So Church for me at 6:00, and don't know how long it well take.

I would not be surprised one bit if they make it show the judge decides who goes home each week from the bottom 2. It would get rid of the whole "shocking results" for the most part. But there are too many weeks where the wrong people go home or stay around.

Again wouldn't be surprised Jamar was sent home for a big return in the top 12. I listen to a weekly podcast about the show and one person commented about how this season there is a lot of manipulation. Sure does seem like it to me at times.

I hope he comes back too. It's just annoying that so many good people are being rejected (like Anoop, Ricky and Jamar) and have to rely on wild card in the first place. As it stands, there's going to be at least ten people in the WC round who deserve to make it through and only three will be chosen. Then you've got people like Alexis Grace and Michael Sarver who aren't very impressive but have already stolen other people's slots, LoL.

Ditto.

I would hate it though, because you know they'd end up saving the same person week after week after week even if they don't deserve it. They could manipulate the show to get the Final 2 they want right from the start, simply by keeping their favorite(s) from ever going home.

This isn't a show like "Top Chef" or "Project Runway." It's American Idol. The entire show was founded on the concept of America choosing who stays and who goes. If they get rid of that element, it kind of makes voting pointless.

So Jamar might come back?! Yes! :D If this is true, then they've planned this from the get go.

Judgment Call: Paula Abdul Disses DioGuardi
By Claudine Zap
Wed, February 25, 2009, 11:45 am PST
Four is definitely a crowd. That's the pronouncement of Paula Abdul, who would like to keep the number of judges on "American Idol," now in its eighth season, to the cozy, Kara DioGuardi-less, three.

It's not that Paula Abdul doesn't like judge number four. According to OK! Magazine, she and the newest addition get along just fine, but "…We tried four judges before and it doesn't work." Abdul's reasoning: It interrupts the show's flow with four people weighing in instead of the more efficient three. Translation: Paula Abdul gets less talk time.

Besides Paula Abdul, Randy Jackson and the infamously snotty Simon Cowell have been a winning combination for the reality show as they dole out pronouncements while whittling down the contestants in search of the best songster. Viewers also get to weigh in by phone voting.

Maybe fans should be asked to vote on the judges, too. While Paula may prefer to be the queen bee of "Idol" judging, online searches for both divas remain high. Abdul does have an edge when it comes to "hot" and "HSN jewelry."

Good thing Abdul's working on side projects. She says her contract is up after this season, and hinted she may not return.

I have been thinking this whole time that Kara has been brought on to replace one of the original three, should they not return next season.

I liked the red-head girl ... Allison?

I'm also liking Kris who's on now.

Finally, some decent singers!

Well, SUPPOSEDLY, Simon wants to leave after Season 10. Paula was already blubbering to OK! or one of those damn magazines, about as much as she loves Kara, there's just "not enough room" for four judges, although I personally think there is.

Paula's contract I guess is up after this season and she says she has a lot of stuff going on and stuff she wants to do, so I could see her departing, but really, what else does she have? LoL!
