I typically catch an episode here or there because my mom, aunt, uncle and cousin are huge fans. I did see David Cook win last year which I was happy about because that little child irritated me for some reason...it may have been the fact that he was like 4 years younger than me and is more successful but whatev!!!

Eh there really was something that irritated me about him. I think it was the time he sang a love song or something and all I kept thinking was that this kid was like 16 and couldn't have possibly had any idea about love or what it really was lol

Stop going city by city and just select the worst singers and the best singers and show them to us.

I just hope the instruments are out. Sorry but I think they took away from this being a singing competition.

I also hope the show doesn't have a ton of singers who have tried to make it but failed like last year. I'm not saying don't allow them but the show had so many last year that it just stirred up too much controversy. Then again. Idol seems to live off that.

I'm on the fence about the new judge. I have concerns because they already have issues with time and now they have another judge to take up even more time.

Simon is usually good but the others better step up.
I think they show the city-by-city auditions because people enjoy the whole "hometown pride" thing and want to support the people that they know come from their neck of the woods.

Regarding the instruments... eh, I don't really care. While Idol is a singing competition, it's obvious that you need more than just a great voice to make it far on the show. You also have to have marketability and the ability to perform -- not just stand there and sing. You can practice perfecting your octaves all day long, but if you're only mechanically good, people will lose interest. You have to connect with the music, and I think that the instruments helped with that in some way.

As for passing talent that's not really amateur (such as people already having albums last season), that did bug me. Part of the show's appeal has always been watching your average girl or boy next door going from nothing to a superstar, but when you start throwing people in there who've already had albums out, it sort of kills the excitement, IMO.

I have the same worries as you regarding the new judge. They've had issues with time in the past, and adding a 4th judge to critique the talent will only soak up more airtime. Does anyone pay attention to what the judges say, anyway? LoL

Simon... meh. He thinks a guy is going to win this year, and I believe his predictions are usually right. He said that there were alot of exceptionally talented men who made it to Hollywood.
Well, they can still show the cities, Just show clips of them in between and show the location of the contestant being shown at the time.

Your right there is more to it then singing but I think the instrument thing is to big a distraction. Hell, I would bet it added more pressure for the contestants last year as they had to focus on that and singing. I still remember Brook falling apart vocally while playing the piano and she never really recovered after that. It's just too much and I think some just go with it to compensate for lack of vocal range. Thus, those with less range get through and those who are better vocally go home or end up in trouble in what is a singing competition. I just think it's got too many messy angles to it.

I totally agree with you about watching the average person get through. That is exactly where I was coming from in saying that. Part of them magic of this show is taking a normal, everyday person with talent from nobody to somebody and that really adds emotional investment and rootability to the show. People like Carly and Micheal last year I liked but the same investment wasn't there. They had already had one attempt and failed. Sure, there is something rootable about second changes but on this show it seems to be more about pushing normal people into stardom.

I think the judges are important when they actually say something worth a damn. I look back at early seasons and all three were so much better. Simon is still ok but sometimes he gets too caught up in being right or in little games with Ryan, Paula, or Randy. I don't expect much from Paula but from the others I want some things pointed out. I like them having fun but there shouldn't be so much fun that they all fall over themselves trying to say something LOL. I think Paula is right in that Simon distracts her. I think she would say more and look better otherwise. She wouldn't be negative but she would be able to be understood by the public LOL.

Not sure about a guy winning. I heard Simon say that and I know he wanted it last year because they really wanted to steer away from Taylor Hicks. It was clear Simon wanted Cook badly, especially in the finale. I think it will be a girl though. It always seems like the early buzz always ends up meaning the opposite. Last year they raved about the women and a man won. This year they rave about the men and I bet a woman will win.

IMO people should watch shows like this from the start. I think it's hard to start midstream or at some point after because it hurts the investment and makes it hard to care about anyone.
True.

I like watching the journey of each person right from the start. It adds alot of emotional investment. Which is why I still get all verklempt everytime I watch the clip of David Cook winning on YouTube, LoL.

Scott, do you normally watch the first half of each season or the last half? Or do you just watch randomly all throughout? Did you get a chance to see David Cook's amazing win last season? :)
Exactly. It's all about the journey.

How is Archie doing by the way? I've been hearing two of Cook's songs alot on the radio. I've only heard one or Archie's. I actually did like him early on and still kind of do. He just had no business winning Idol last year and I'm glad he didn't LOL.

^Looks good.

The women sound good there!

The new judge reminds me of someone. She kind of resembles Katherine McPhee but that isn't who I'm thinking of...damn, can't think of it.

Definitely one thing that needed to change was the audition weeks. It has gotten completely out of hand with the bad ones. There are the ones that go out of their way to make a fool of themselves to get on tv. I think it is pretty easy to see who that is. But there are still a few that are bad and still don’t believe it when get rejected. With that they are trying to find the next William Hung. Okay that was dumb luck, don’t press it. Auditions might not have changed completely, but at least they made an effort with it.

I also think last year they really needed to make sure that they got solid talent which might be why we didn’t have more of the nobody to superstar people. Season 5 you had Taylor Hicks win and IMO Season 6 was a bust. Over the six seasons you only had three BIG stars come out of it and one of them came in fourth place. I think they needed to really make sure they found someone who could be a star at the end. At least it seemed that was what Simon was looking for. Many times his opinions might be negative but it is more to light a fire under the butt of the contestant to do more and not just be average. I think it worked with Cook (especially earlier on) and he was trying that with Michael Johns and Carly Smithson, but they didn’t quite respond as well to it. But I also think David C, Michael and Carly appealed to the same type of fans who maybe threw their votes towards one, but couldn’t vote equally for all three. I do think you should had Cook, Archie and either Michael or Carly as your top three.

I really don’t have a problem with the second chance talent because many people get record contracts and if that first song doesn’t get instant airplay, they are dropped. I love Cook’s pre-idol album, but I would never had heard it if he wasn’t on Idol. Music today is very different just like television viewing with DVR’s. It is so easy now to just buy the one song you like and not bother with the entire album. You need that big radio hit, but even that doesn’t guarantee and complete career after the hit. Before buying Cook’s album that came out a couple of weeks ago, the last full album I bought was the NKOTB one. I only bought that full album because here were my teen idols back and I only listen to about half of it. It would have cost me less to just buy the six songs I like from the album.

I do like the journey of watching someone from beginning to the end. Cook’s win was the first one that I teared up about. There was just something so genuine about the whole thing that it felt good to see a guy like that win. You could see after the performance night he had pretty much put in his head that Archie won and was able to relax the finale night. Then you can see him realize he won from the time Ryan said his name until right at the end. I could watch that moment a million times.

I'm watching this season, from start to finish! :D

And I loooove bad auditions! Of course, I like balance... have bad auditions, but I also like to hear some good singing too.

But I guess 3 weeks is okay.

Hopefully we get some good singing this season! :)

I like Archuleta too. I was impressed by him from the moment I first saw him.

I just liked David Cook more. He's much more of a well-rounded artist and natural performer.

She was recently dropped from her label. I read an interview with her where she was bitching that the label had to let her go because they were spending too much money on Carrie Underwood, LoL.

Hmm... let's see. Mega popular, critically acclaimed and extremely successful recording artist vs. average newbie that nobody cares about. I'd bank on Underwood, too.

I was a huge Archuleta fan and never, ever understood what people saw in David Cook. Blech. Gross. never understood why he was so popular. He was rude, arrogant, and uncouth. I guess it is a matter of preference.

I like my divas and adult contemporary dudes. Archuleta, when the teenaged girls start latching onto something new, will do just fine in the AC charts. Archie's music should be played on Delilah and John Tesh.

Regarding the bad auditions: I think the problem with the overload of them is that American Idol misses the camp value in the auditions. Meaning, the people we love to see who can't sing for shit are the people who sing bad, but KNOW deep in their hearts they did good and believe it.

A lot of bad auditions(safe for a few) have either been from people who are very weird(the Moses Guy) or people who act that way just to get on TV(Mary Roach, William Hung, etc.)

We need more cocky, confident people getting owned instead of seeing all the circus crap. I could watch those auditions all day.

What bugged me about Archuleta was the way he was all "aww GOSH!" everytime the judges gave him a good review. I mean, at some point he had to realize that he was good, so acting as shocked as he did everytime they gave him kudos started to come across as very fake.

I'll never deny the fact that he has talent though. I said it many times last season and I meant it -- the kid is good.

Also, I agree with you about the auditions. Too many people know they're bad and are just putting on a show to get on TV. That takes all the fun out of it. There's alot more fun to be had when the person auditioning actually believes in their heart of hearts that they're amazing.

WORD! I want more moments like this:

And THIS...

You can tell these people desperately believed they were 1000% the best. :D

And P.S. I think Archuleta was trying to stay humble and not let it get to his head. I think that's very endearing.

I know for me my problem with him was that he would sing and it was this big adult voice. But then when it was him just talking or when they were giving him the feedback he was a little kid. I just never felt I knew what he was really like. It all feel like he was a robot. I always had this hard time buying this little kid singing these songs that were all about the meaning and I found myself asking myself "Does he even understand the meaning of the words?" It kept coming back to a comment when he didn't realize that the meaning of Imagine was more of a sad song.

It was sort of like why I never could get behind Syesha. She always seemed like an actress. The emotion when she sang never seemed genuine. Same with Archuleta. I do think that maybe after a few years with some more maturity, the voice and personality would be at the same level. I just wanted to feel something natural which I just don't think maturity wise he doesn't have as a performer.
