That was part of my problem with him too...he is sooo young and he's singing about love or breaking up or losing someone or whatever...I just never bought that he truly understood what the song was about or how it felt to go through what he was singing about.

It was sort of like why I never could get behind Syesha. She always seemed like an actress. The emotion when she sang never seemed genuine.
Ditto that!

Syesha had an incredible voice, but it always felt like she was putting on an act when she was on stage. We never got to know the "real" Syesha, and that caused an emotional disconnect, IMO. She was total Broadway.

I really couldn't stand David Archuleta! Every season there is someone I hate - and the judges love and pimp. GAWD. AI causes me stress.

Last season, Carly Smithson was my GIRL. That girl is love!

Have the results shows been reduced to 30 minutes this season?

I recall reading an article several weeks ago talking about the possibility, but I don't think they've ever given a definite answer. They were talking about shortening the results shows to "keep them exciting" rather than dragging it out for an hour.

Anyway, I just read an article which stated that the results shows for this season have been re-tooled to keep them from being so boring like the last few seasons results shows have been.

Fox’s Vinciquerra optimistic on ‘Idol’ changes

NEW YORK — Tony Vinciquerra, chairman and CEO of the Fox Networks Group, is hopeful that this season of “American Idol” will be better received than last thanks to some tweaks.

For example, the “Idols” results show was “very boring … to be blunt about it” last year, so its composition has been changed, he said Wednesday at Citi’s 19th Annual Entertainment, Media and Telecommunications Conference in Arizona in a session that was webcast.

He added that new coaches who can draw the younger “Idol” target audience and a new judge are also part of the revamps for the show, whose season premiere is scheduled for next week.

Importantly, “I am told the talent is terrific,” compared to what he argued was a pool of contenders with less exciting personalities last year, said Vinciquerra, even though he hasn’t seen any footage of this year’s talent yet. A record number of people lined up for the tryouts for the new season, he told the Citi conference.

Kara DioGuardi: “I feel very confident that there are at least 5 men who are great.”

New Idol judge Kara DioGuardi gave a press conference earlier today. Just like Simon Cowell, Kara seems to be bullish on the guys. She says there was a Maroon-5 like vibe going on with some of the boys, and she loves when contestants play instruments. Plus, she’s waiting for a call from Chris Daughtry. She wants to co-write with him. Her catch phrase? “Be you. Don’t try to be anybody but you.”

The guys have the edge? “I’m not sure I can get into the names of the contestants but looking at the contestants as a whole I felt that the males were strongest. That being said, there are one or two females that I’m really excited about as well. I’m really excited for the show to start the next phase.”

Season 7 vs. Season 8 contestants: “There is a uniqueness to some of the male contestants in terms of their voices and song choice. I feel very confident that there are at least 5 men who are great.”

More on this year’s contestants: “There were people doing country, people doing rock, and there was a lot of soul influence, especially with the male contestants. Not just R&B but more like how Maroon 5 is soulful.”

On working with Chris Daughtry: “I would love to co-write with him. At one point he was going to do a duet on a song I’d written, but it didn’t happen. If he’s out there and wants to do a co-write, call me!”

On working with Kelly Clarkson: “I love Kelly. I can tell her to sing anything and she can just sing it. She was feisty and she put her personality into the songs and for the stuff I was writing at the time she was just perfect for it.”

On contestants playing instruments: “I love when people play instruments. It adds another component, shows artistry and there are a lot of people who really fall apart when you take their instrument away from them so it really shows their range.”

How has the judges dynamic changed? “I think there are times that definitely Paula and I have sided against the guys, there’s a little girl power going on. It’s also just a change and so it does bring out a different dynamic. I was nervous: I didn’t know when I was going to speak or where I was going to sit.”

How would she describe each of the judges? “Paula has a lot of heart, Simon prett much tells it like it is. Sometimes he can be harsh but he’s usually right. And Randy’s a diplomat.”

How would you describe yourself? “I think I have a combination of all of them. I don’t mince words but I do feel I have a heart and when you’re dealing with creative people you want to make sure you encourage them but you also don’t want them to waste their time. I say negative things but I do it with some heart and some understanding.”

Does she have a signature line? “I’m working on it. I’m not sure I have it yet, but give me some tme. [later] “Be you. Don’t try to be anybody but you.”

I could never get behind Carly because I hated her sob story: someone vying to be the "American" Idol didn't get her greencard in time to compete in Season Five. Maybe I'm just a bit of a nationalist, but I prefer someone labeled the "American" Idol be born in the U.S. It's one of the biggest reasons I couldn't get into Michael Johns either(that and the fact that he sucked).

That, and the fact that Carly already had a record deal prior to American Idol with a record label that Randy Jackson had a major stake in. It wasn't just a demo with tapes like other Idols before her. I think she actually released an album and had some decent-budgeted music videos.

And I KNOW Archie did American Idol, but he's different. He's GREAT! :D

ETA: Does anyone remember Carmen Rasmussen from Season Two? She was like one of the top five or six and Randy "The Diplomat" just came out and said(after her performance of "Love Will Lead You Back") "I think we're looking for the best in America and man, you're not even close. Not even close." I just remembered dying laughing at that.

I hope the Wild Card Showdown and Semifinals weeks bring more moments like these:

Well, Von Smith (the Mason lookalike) has been removing his content from YouTube and MySpace so that's a pretty good sign he's made it through Hollywood.

Show starts tomorrow, y'all! Let's hope it's worth a crap this year.

'American Idol' Auditions Are Better (And Worse) Than Ever

Posted Image

"American Idol" auditions are back, and they're better than ever — as you've come to expect, they will once again have an amazing mix of the good, the bad and the ear-splittingly ugly when the show returns to Fox on Tuesday.

MTV News has gotten a sneak peek at some of the auditions, and you'll need to brace yourself for a few of them ... like when one girl decided to take on Bette Midler's "The Rose." Based on her desire to continue with the song despite the judges' laughter, it seems this tone-deaf young woman hasn't yet realized she can't actually sing.

Meanwhile, another colorfully dressed young woman embarked on the Patti LaBelle classic, "Lady Marmalade," and, well, her singing style was as colorful as her outfit. Another guy belted out "Stars" by Simply Red, causing Kara DioGuardi to recoil in horror as Randy Jackson jokingly added, "Let it out."

Then there are the auditions you don't mind listening to — one girl sang "Bubbly" by Colbie Caillat and, even though she did well, she continued to sing despite Simon asking her to stop. Another girl took on "Superstar" by the Carpenters; she had a sweet voice. Another contestant sang Keith Urban's "Somebody Like You," and his country twang fit the song perfectly.

In addition to a slew of new contestants, the show's new judge Kara DioGuardi is adjusting to life on the hit talent competition. "It took a minute to be yourself and also find a place in the show where you weren't at all detracting from the people around you or inhibiting them in any way," DioGuardi said in a conference call with reporters Thursday. "It's something I'm still working on. I think I'm there."

The only person tonight who I found halfway passable was Emily Wynne Hughes, who sang Barracuda. The rest were all either total crap or very forgettable. Definitely no big standouts tonight.

LMAO @ those crying/screaming girls when David Cook lost. So funny everytime I see it!

The black dude with the deep voice, wasn't he on before? I could swear I saw another guy with a super deep voice last season or the season before who sounded just like him! Oh, and the bikini chick needs to go already. She's like a Megan clone from Rock of Love/Charm School. The only thing missing is the bleach blonde hair, LoL. I couldn't stand her or the wobbly head thing she did while she sang. Yuck!

Oh! I also like Kara as a judge. I think she's great. I LoL'd at her getting all defensive at the girl telling her that her demonstration sucked.

From the previews, it looks like tomorrow's episode will show the auditions of Von Smith (videos posted on Page 1) and Jason Castro's brother, Michael. It's stunning how similar Jason and Michael sound.

There’s more new on ‘American Idol’ than Kara DioGuardi

At the center of the media whirlwind is the man who arguably has done more to shape reality television than anyone else: Fox’s head of alternative programming, Mike Darnell. The executive said he’s excited as he anticipates the reaction to the shake-up within America’s most popular television program.

But the new judge is one of a host of alterations made to the show in response to last year’s midseason stall in the ratings. This season there will be a shuffling of the midround rules — including a wild-card round — and the use of more backstage footage to underscore the young contestants’ emotional agonies.

“We’re going back to sort of a raw feel,” he said. In the middle rounds, after singing and being judged, the contestants will immediately be confronted by host Ryan Seacrest rather than being allowed to retreat backstage, as in the past.

“So you see if they’re upset with what Simon said, you get to see it right away instead of them going backstage,” explained Darnell. “It’s really the rawness of what’s happening. How do they feel right after? How do they feel stepping off that stage? They can’t hide it. They can’t cover it up.”

American Idol kicks off tonight with a new host and a revved up Randy Jackson

"Idol’s going to be blazing hot again this season, man," Jackson told Fox News backstage Monday night at the taping of his new show, America's Best Dance Crew. "Some different kind of kids."

And the Idol host made some early predictions, in his own inimitable verbal style.

"The boys have the edge right now. We’ll see who holds up through the test of time, you know what I mean, because it, it’s a little early to really tell now, but I think the boys have the edge."

This year, the boys and girls are going to have to make it past Idol's Three Musketeers of Jackson, Paula Abdul, Simon Cowell, plus a fourth Musketeer, new judge, singer-songwriter Kara DioGuardi.

So far, the chemistry among the judges is great, says Jackson.

"Everybody’s getting along," he says. "I mean, I don’t know, Simon’s been very lonely since he split up with his girl but I, I’m trying to find him someone."

Cowell and longtime girlfriend, Terri Seymour, broke up last November.

Hey wait, isn't Kara DioGuardi single? Now that would make for a wild new season.
