If Anoop sings this song tomorrow, he's setting himself up for the slaughter.

Or Lil. She'll be in the bottom 3 with that song.

It's time for Scott or Anoop to go home.

Reality Blurred

Kara DioGuardi writing a possible finale song; amateur songwriting contest cancelled for Idol 8

American Idol 8 has cancelled the amateur songwriting contest for this season, and new judge Kara DioGuardi is working on a song that may be selected as the winner’s coronation song—as she has in the past, although her previous entries were rejected.

“I’m taking a stab at writing a song, possibly the winner’s song,” Kara told me. “I was just told, if I want to take a stab at it,” to do it, and so “I’m going to put my hat in the ring and see what happens.” That producers have asked her—and presumably others—to write the finalists’ original song means there’s no songwriting contest this year.

Fox confirmed that, as a spokesperson told me, “There isn’t a song writing element to this season’s American Idol.” The songwriting contest first began during the sixth season, although even then it almost didn’t happen. While it wasn’t promoted as much last year, a songwriting contest also produced the single the Davids performed and Cook released, “Time of My Life.”

I interviewed Kara for this msnbc.com feature about her time on the show so far, in which she talks with remarkable honesty (“I’m learning every week. I’m trying to get better”) about everything from the rumors of conflict between judges (“just not true”) to her judging style (“more technical … I take people’s dreams very seriously”) to why song choice is important (“you’re going to live or die by your song choice after this competition”).

Speaking of song choice, Kara said this isn’t the first time she’s tried to write the coronation song. “I’ve always tried to write the final song so it’s not really a big [deal]—they’re either going to like it or they’re not. I have, and it didn’t work out. But I got singles on some of the Idol’s [albums], so that was a good consolation prize.”

When I complained about how terrible that song tends to be, Kara told me that “it’s a hard song to write, because it is inspirational and you find yourself when you’re writing it, it can be cliché, it can be all those things. But at the same time, the show is about dreams, it’s about going for your dream and not letting anybody stop you and hopefully realizing that moment and having the audience have been a part of that. It’s a pretty powerful thing when you think about it.”

I asked if she’s writing a specific style of song or one that can be adapted to a wide range of styles, and she said, “There are some performers who can take on many different songs and still make them their own, and then there are some which we’re seeing, I think this season, that can’t. So when I’m writing the song, I’m not thinking of the winner, I’m just thinking of the three strong people that I could think could end up possibly being the American Idol, I do believe that all of them could take the song on and deliver it in a way that’s unique to them.”

“I would hope that whoever wins this year could take a song and make it their own,” Kara added. “And I think that’s really what the American Idol is about.”

Kara's song will be something lame, I'm sure. I can imagine the lyrics already.

Thanks King for posting that stuff about Cook's appearance. That was interesting. I have to admit that I doubted it was pre-taped at first despite knowing it was LOL. They do a good job of weaving pre-taped stuff into the show most of the time. I should've never doubted though since David's brother is said to be ill and I don't think his mother would be hanging out at Idol if one of her sons were so ill.

I agree with the idea that the judges would save Kris. At this point, they don't have much time to use the save and the closer we get to top 5, the more likely they will use it "just because." Plus, Kris is kind of becoming what Jordin Sparks and David Cook were...the up and coming favorite to win it all. You just need to look at those two seasons. Melinda and Lakisha were early favorites in season 6 and both didn't even make the final. Jordin in and won and never once found herself in the bottom 3. David Cook was the same. Carly and David Archuleta were the early favorites, along with Micheal Johns. Cook's performance of "Hello" put him on the map and then "Billie Jean" began his momentum toward the final. He soon became a favorite and won it all. I see that happening here. I can honestly see him knocking off Danny since he, Danny, and Matt sort of appeal to the same types of fans. Not to mention, there seems to be a group out there called the "Anyone but Danny" group that is voting in a way to try to oust Danny early. Only problem is we know the judges would save him so the time to pick him off is after the save is used or after the top 5.

I've felt all season that both Danny and Adam won't make the finals. Unlike last year, I can't see the audience putting through the most pimped contestants. I think one of them will be picked off and that Kris will likely be the one to benefit from it. I don't think Lil will as I think she has regressed big time in this competition. I wish it would be Alison but she won't go much further if she can't get more people voting for her.

Oh, and I'm kind of sad about the songwriting competition not happening this year. Season 6's song kind of blew but the song last yea that Cook sang was good and I liked the competition because it was fan interactivity. I figured they may get rid of it though because it's one last thing to hassle with. I knew Kara had tried writing finale songs for the show before but I don't like the idea of her writing one this year as a judge. It just seems wrong so I hope her song does not get chosen. She is a talented songwriter and I've liked alot of her work but she is judging this competition and we all know the song that is sung makes a difference and I can't help but think there would affect her judgment That is a good interview by her though and you can tell she is learning each week.

As for Megan, I'm glad she clarified what happened but the bird noises were still stupid. I get why she did them but it was childish. Also, while i understand what she meant when she said she didn't care what Simon though, that was still stupid because it came off all wrong and she should've clarified what she said right then and there because she's pretty much screwed on all levels now. She still comes off cocky here, saying how she just sung right at the judge's and all. I'm glad she is gone and at least she goes back to her son, who she clearly missed. She probably could do well on a cartoon but, as I said, she shot herself in the foot with the "I don't care" crap, regardless of why she said it. I also didn't like her being ok with her brother talking back to Kara. That shit was uncalled for but I'm glad the situation did not become anything bigger. I'm also glad she is gone because the song she had in mind for this week would've been butchered by her.

I also have to say that Rick is right...Megan could pass for Jennifer Garner. Her face looks exactly like her's!

As for this week, if those song spoilers are true, this could be a wild night. Anoop would likely bomb, as would Lil. I wouldn't expect Lil to be in the bottom 3 regardless as she has a pretty strong fanbase. It looks like Alison may be going for a softer, more vulnerable performance if that song choice is true, which could be good. She has the vocals but maybe showing another side of herself will help. I think maybe she is coming off like a much better version of Amanda Overmyer, someone who can do rock but that's it. Maybe doing something different will help. I'm just noticing a theme here. Gina Glocksen and Carly Smithson both left the competition far too early. Both had killer vocals and were similar to Alison in style and how they performed. They all were rather unique but there was a sentiment that they could do nothing but edgy kind of stuff and that was not true. They both had great vocals but they never went over well and I can't help but fear Alison may be going through a similar situation with the public and that is why she is having trouble getting people to vote for her consistently.

LMAO.

I actually thought the song got better with the songwriting competition. At the very least, they were more creative. The season 6 one wasn't very good but it was still different and last year's was pretty good. It didn't come off like an Idol finale song at all, really. Its doesn't matter much anyway since the song is usually a distant memory after July LOL, unless you listen to East Listening stations on the radio. They tend to play the songs for awhile longer then other stations. I think Cook's song last year was the first song in a long time that got played for awhile on most stations, at least around where I live.

Frankly, I wish they would just let the contestants write their own songs or have them work with someone to come up with a song. It makes it more personal. They could just give the contestant guidelines to follow and the contestants could work on it as they go.

Alright, that other list of song spoilers was wrong. Here's the official list posted at MJsBigBlog by someone who attended today's dress rehearsal...

Danny Gokey - “Stand By Me"

Kris Allen - “All She Wants To do is Dance” by Don Henley

Lil Rounds - “What’s Love Got to Do with It” by Tina Turner

Anoop Desai - “True Colors” by Cyndi Lauper

Scott MacIntrye - “The Search is Over” by Survivor (played electric guitar)

Allison Iraheta - “I Can’t Make You Love Me”

Matt Giraud - “Part Time Lover” by Stevie Wonder

Adam Lambert - “Mad World” by Tears for Fears

----------------------------

OMG. Adam, please do not ruin Mad World. Please, please, please. I'm not crazy about the Tears for Fears version, but the Gary Jules version is gorgeous and I adore it! Thankfully, it's not the kind of song that requires big vocals or lots of screeching, so I could see myself enjoying it if he doesn't turn it into some ridiculous glam rock scream-fest.

DANNY - Not bad. Not amazing, but it's a unique arrangement. A little cheesy, but I like it. I think the beginning of the song was stronger and more simple than the middle and the end, but overall... decent.

I give him 7 out of 10.

LoL. I hear that.

Notice how the judges (for the most part) gave him rave reviews since he's in the death spot tonight. He was good, but he wasn't THAT good. They want to make sure he gets votes despite performing first. I'm on to their trickery! LoL.

Based on the song list, Lil may be good but Anoop I can see being awful. I can also see Adam screwing up.

I'm shocked that Danny is going first tonight and that Kris and Lil are going 2nd and 3rd. Sure, they all at some point have to perform early on but going early is usually dangerous, especially if you so a slow or safe song like I felt Danny just did. I doubt any of these three are in danger but it should be interesting to see how going early in the show affects where they stand in voting.

Their comments wouldn't make a difference. Mat went first a few weeks ago and they heaped praise upon him and he ended up in the bottom two.

KRIS - I'm not feeling it. The vocals are nothing special, the arrangement is generic. Just blah, LoL.

I give him 5 out of 10.
