THR.com Schwartz and Savage are repped by Endeavor. 'Gossip Girl' spinoff moving forward CW orders backdoor pilot for prequel By Nellie Andreeva Jan 14, 2009, 07:48 PM ET It's been the biggest mystery on the CW's "Gossip Girl" this season. No, it's not whether Lily and Rufus will find their love child, though the two are conspicuously related. It's whether the show will launch a spinoff. After months of gossip and speculation, "Gossip" creators/exec producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage are proceeding with a spinoff that will serve as a prequel to the hot sophomore drama and chronicle the wild teen years of Lily van der Woodsen (Kelly Rutherford) in Los Angeles in the 1980s. The network has ordered a backdoor pilot for the project, which will air as a "Gossip" episode May 11. "There has been a lot of speculation about a 'Gossip Girl' spinoff, but we were adamant that it had to be the right time and the right idea," Schwartz said. Written by Schwartz and Savage, the spinoff will center on young Lily Rhodes (her maiden name) who, after a falling-out with her parents, is forced to move in with her sister, the black sheep of the Rhodes family. Overnight, Lily has to transition from a life of luxury and schooling at a wealthy Montecito boarding school to living deep in the Valley she once made fun of and going to public school. Caught between two worlds, Lily dives into the fast-paced Sunset Strip and the Hollywood lifestyle of the '80s, journeying over the hill to a world of wealth and excess that used to be her own. Eventually, she is bound to meet rocker Rufus Humphrey (played on "Gossip" by Matthew Settle) for a fling that will result in Lily's secret pregnancy. Unlike the original series, which is based on Alloy Entertainment's series of novels, the spinoff is based on an original idea by Schwartz and Savage, who will exec produce it with Bob Levy and Leslie Morgenstein. Mark Piznarski, who helmed the pilot for "Gossip," is on tap to direct the spinoff backdoor pilot. Produced by College Hill Pictures and Alloy in association with Warner Bros. TV and CBS Paramount TV, it will be shot on location in Los Angeles. Instead of utilizing a character from the Manhattan-based "Gossip" to anchor a spinoff, Schwartz and Savage settled on a prequel idea that is set in a different city and different time than the original series as they didn't want to "diminish 'Gossip Girl' in any way." "We didn't want to upset the chemistry of our cast -- all of whom are crucial to the show," Savage said. "Nor did we want to dilute New York City as a character." By doing a prequel, if its goes to series, different versions of some characters will co-exist on two shows. "We are inspired by the opportunity to tell overlapping stories and introduce characters that will appear in the past and the present -- and hopefully enrich both shows," Schwartz said. "We love exploring fashion, pop culture, music and a heightened world that's just a little more fun than the one we actually live in. L.A. in the '80s totally fits the bill." Schwartz and Savage are repped by Endeavor. |

I agree, on both accounts. A) I don't care about seeing what happened in Lily and Rufus's past. We already know how they end up, so what's the point? B) GG is struggling enough in the ratings, as it is. How in the hell is a spin-off gonna survive? |

I agree. I love GG, but it isnt big enough to support a spin-off. |

I'd LOVE a Jenny spin-off, just because it would mean getting her off GG! LoL |

^ Jenny can be annoying, I'm hot and cold with her. But she is the high school future of GG, and I don't think they want to cut that tie. This does seem lame and unnecessary. HOWEVER, I have given it some thought, and LA in the 80s? It could be fun and excessive - they could have Lily doing some blo (as per Perez) to "stay thin" and hooking up with randoms LOL. I think it's only the one episode too, so I will give it a shot. I actually do like the Lily character - she was funnier in season 1 though. Lily and Rufus aren't as great as last season, when I felt they had REALLY strong chemistry. I was totally sold on them (for a teen show too!), and ready to throw Darena under the bus LOL (actually, I think I still am). Now she seems tired, but I think that's more because Kelly Rutherford is pregnant. Edited by cassie1013, Jan 17 2009, 06:01 AM.

KR is pregnant?! I didn't know that! But I think they could lose Jenny and be just fine. Most people don't seem to like her, and they still have Eric. |

Yeah, I have a feeling this one episode is a "test" for a next season spin off. I dunno. I just don't trust Josh Schwartz - great ideas, great producer but HORRIBLE at tying up plots and soap opera pacing. Pacing is a hard thing, as even most daytime soaps can't get it right, but he's just SO bad. He wraps up good conflict and gets rid of new characters within 3 episodes - wtf? I don't know that this spinoff could survive. They would need to make it REALLY fun though, especially with old school music and fashion. Your point A is so true though. Especially because there are SOOO many continuity errors in the Lily/Rufus time line - the writers obviously weren't paying attention to what they were doing. I really noticed when I rewatched my season 1 DVD (christmas gift). After watching the episodes back to back, they changed it from Rufus being in a 90s band to late 80s, to Lily leaving Rufus for Serena's dad/inheritance at 20, now to her actually leaving because she was 19 and knocked up...there's way more than that too. It was just glaring - I never really noticed as last season was actually happening. |

OMG! Seriously? It's like...a scandal. On Perez and TMZ - with SEVERAL posts! So she's 4 months preggers, getting a divorce from this rich ass husband and now all sorts of crazy shit has ensued. He's claiming she threw a laptop at him, she claims he's going to leave the country with their 2 year old... edit: here's some of it - http://perezhilton.com/category/gossip-girl/ True, but Eric's more of a side character. I actually disagree, I think Jenny is popular, especially with younger girls. PageSixSixSix magazine named her an icon in the making. Also, fashion blogs seem to LOVE her. Who's popular in GG is really a strange question - looking at online sites, blogs, forums, Blair is EASILY the more liked between Blair and Serena. However, Blake Lively gets all the press - and even a Vogue cover next month! Which is even stranger, because Blair's fashion sense on the show has been VERY highly regarded whereas Serena just fits in with what everyone else is doing right now (the leather jackets, boots, jeans, etc. - very popular right now). Just my own opinion, but the Vogue cover should have featured BOTH of them to show contrasting styles. Edited by cassie1013, Jan 17 2009, 05:57 AM.

^ See Perez above! Here's some of the tmz stuff..and it's easy to miss if you don't watch entertainment news shows, but all the blogs were definitely on this as it was like pregnant AND divorcing which was kind of odd. I wonder if he's gay and she caught him in bed with someone Lol! OR maybe the baby isn't his! (can you tell I want to work in entertainment? LOL). http://www.tmz.com/2009/01/13/gossip-mom-wants-hubby-s-wings-clipped they broke the story first and have been following it as it happens. Edited by cassie1013, Jan 17 2009, 06:00 AM.
