Really not that suprised by the drop for DAYS, considering most of the viewers that they gained were all home on holidays and thus off work. Even with the HUGE 400,000 viewer drop, they are STILL above their viewer numbers for this same time last year, which is definetly a positive! Still good to see that they held ok in 18-49 and didn't plummet in any of the major demos (outside of the Female 12-17...again expected). Still all around good numbers for the show AND it is still in #3 for Total Viewers and HH. Edited by Mitchapalooza, Jan 16 2009, 03:17 AM.

I agree. The viewers they lost were those they gained during Christmas and New Year''s week with kids out of school. They kept all of their pre-holiday December gain and went back to right where they were before Christmas. That is very good. Essentially, they lost nothing if your one to not count holiday boosts so they are still on an up trend. The way to build ratings is to inch up gradually by stabilizing and stopping the bleeding and then gradually moving up so that each time you start from a higher base then you did before. That is how JER did it in the 90's. There would be a gain and the show would hold on to most of it or some of it so that it started from a higher point and that is how the ratings were built. It happened over a long period of time. Days spent weeks at 2.0 and finally inched up to a 2.1 in December. If they can maintain that, they can continue to build up. Demos look good too. All around, good performance. Good for Y&R too. The numbers for soaps have been overall positive. I would say GH has to be concerned about that 1.9 on Friday. That is their first outside a holiday but with the big story coming up I'm sure they will bounce back for now. |

^^ Why is it a good thing if none of the new viewers from the holidays liked what they saw enough to stick around? I took a look at Jason's site, and in past years, there has not always been a drop the week after New Years. |

Of course, it's not a good thing. But I think those kids just went back to school, that's all. Or they were traumatized by Dan and Chloe and are now in therapy at 1 pm. :hypnotize: |

Because it was expected and, yes, there has been a dropoff after New Year;s, especially in recent years. I still remember the shock last year when the show dropped the week Drake officially returned. It went up the following week due to the MLK day holiday. This year that likely won't happen since MLK day is next week so we have another week to see how the show can hold up. The good thing is they maintained most of their gains they had pre-Christmas. The gain that had very little to do with the holidays and people being home so that means Days still came out of December up so if they can maintain that it means we have a legitimate up trend (I still think it's legitimate but I know some had their doubts). Days came in December around a 2.0 and around 2, 600,000-2,700,000 in total viewers. In the first three weeks of December, it jumped every week and now it's over 2, 800,000 and at a 2.1 with solid demos. Like I said, it gives them a higher base to build from for their next surge and that is how you build back an audience. It happens gradually and takes time but Days is on the right track the past few months. Let's also consider too that Days jumped the most of any soap during the holidays so they were going to drop off more then anyone else so their dropoff was going to be look worse. |

In 08 there was a drop (as you're saying), in 07 and 06 the ratings stayed the same, and in 05 there was actually a gain. If I went back further than that I'm sure it would be a mixed bag, but my point is just that it should not be a 'given' that there will always be a drop after the holiday weeks. I understand what you're saying about their maintaining the ratings they had before the holidays. However, it's not just schoolkids who are the cause of the holiday gains, and one might hope that some of the new viewers would become regular viewers, even if they recorded the show (which would count in the ratings). I'd guess that's what happened in the past years when the ratings stayed the same or went up. I'm just pointing out that I don't see it as a good sign that the ratings went right back down to where they were. |

Oh, your right it's a mixed bag but there usually is a dropoff when a show gains every week for a month LOL. You can't gain every week and I didn't expect them to hold above 3,000,000. And they aren't back where they were. They are back where they were before the teens flocked to watching the show. So, in essence, the "real" gain (by this I mean the bump that was not holiday inflated) is still there so Days still held on to what was a real gain IMO. A gain they got not due to a holiday or kids being home and that means alot in the broad scheme of things. It gives them a higher base to start from, providing they maintain this and continue to trend up. So, it is a positive even if it doesn't seem like it, at least to me. I guess we're not understanding each other lol. All I'm saying is, if the ratings go back to where they were before the holiday bump (which is caused by both adults and teens who are home for the week), then the new holiday viewers didn't like the show enough to stay around. In past years when the ratings stayed the same or even went up the week after the holidays, I'd attribute that to the new 'holiday viewers' continuing to watch the show. Again, I understand what you're saying about steady gains before the holidays. My point is that I'd take this particular aspect (the post-holiday .2 drop) as a negative, not a positive. |

I get what your saying but even in the past the bulk of holiday viewers don't stick around. What happens is those that stay home and watch half the time only watch because there is nothing better on. It's kind of like the Olympics bump where many of us felt people had just left the TV on after the Olympics were over. People just put it on for whatever reason and watch it and maybe they choose Days because they once watched it or know someone on it or what have you. In terms of people who may watch during the holidays and like it and decide to record it when returning to their routines, it can't be said that didn't happen. They would likely use a DVR moreso then a traditional VCR so unless we see the DVR numbers, we really don't know. I also think that the holiday bump in large part could be fans who usually watch via DVR but happened to be home so they watched live during the two weeks. That could account for why Days had such a big jump as, at last report, they had the best DVR numbers. Sara Bibel posted those numbers a few months ago. I really wish we could see DVR numbers because they could tell you alot, especially in this circumstance. |

^^ We do see DVR #'s. These are "Live + same day" which means if you record and watch the same day, it's counted. I think there is "Live + ___ days" also published, though we don't see it here. (Soapnet isn't counted, though.) |

As for the rest... I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. In my mind, any way you spin it, it's a drop off. If you're saying that the new holiday viewers did stick around, then that means some 'regular' viewers left, to account for the drop. If the holiday viewers didn't stick around, I think that's also a negative. I don't think I'd use the Olympic analogy - there, many said (though I disagreed to some extent) that people were just leaving their TV's on. I understand the Olympics are an all-day event, but do people leave their TV's on 24/7 for two holiday weeks?? I'd say many of the 'holiday viewers' were actually watching the show and are potential viewers, who didn't get hooked at all. |

They do leave them on if they are doing something else. As many said back in August, they may be watching the Olympics and get up to make lunch or do something else while leaving the TV on. It does happen. In fact, on this very board people say all the time how they have Days on but merely as background noise. I often wonder how many watch the news and just leave the TV on and that somehow gets counted. It does happen. People get busy and forget. As for DVR numbers, Rick or someone else would know but I don't think they are factored in here. When Sara Bibel posted the numbers, we all spoke at length about how we wanted those to be counted and how promising they were. I don't think DVR is counted for primetime either because we only seem them posted on the net only so often. I may be wrong but I think the 'Live+ Same Day" is for Tivo's or something. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable can help us with this LOL. |

I've been curious about DVR numbers, too. The last I heard, TiVo is probably counted, but TiVo isn't the only DVR around. My cable company offers DVR and I use it to record shows. I wonder if those are counted? I would think it would actually be EASIER to utilize DVR stats than the regular Neilsen way, since DVR is all computerized. I would really expect ratings to go up all the way around if those were counted. Same with SoapNet viewing, which is never counted. |

As I understand it, the only DVR numbers counted (in the ratings we see posted) are those where the show is watched the same day. So, if you watch the next day or on the weekend or whatever, those aren't counted in these ratings. And I know a lot of people who do that. So, I think part of the holiday bump is probably people who normally DVR but don't watch that same day who are now home and can watch live. I don't think it's the whole change (or even the majority of it) but I think it is some of it. As for the bump itself, by my calculations Days had about 150,000 more viewers for the first full week of January than they did the first full week of December, so (at this point) I don't think we can say that none of the viewers watching during the holidays stuck around. Some possibly did. But, until we see if Days maintains that gain, it's up for debate. What I can tell you (based on tracking the ratings) is that Days has steadily gained viewers since September. It's been gradual, but it's a real trend. Throwing out the holidays, Days has gained 200,000 - 300,000 viewers since the beginning of September, and both the demos are up slightly as well. I may not understand it because I don't think the show has gotten better in that time, but it's real. Whether it lasts is always the question because you have J&M leaving, plus the spring has been a troublesome time for Days the last few years. But, that gain is there for now. |
