So if you just record a show on DVR, it's not automatically counted to the ratings? That's weird/dumb.

I guess because sometimes people delete shows without ever watching them. I don't know if they have a way of recording whether a show was actually on or not. Also, there is the "resume" option if a show was started, but stopped in the middle. Hey, I'm still trying to figure out how they made records! :D

I agree it's weird and dumb, although from an advertiser's perspective it probably makes sense. If somebody is DVR-ing they are unlikely to be watching commercials anyway and, I suppose, even less likely the longer the delay in watching. We're probably lucky that they consider the same day DVR watchers since the advertisers only really care about people watching live who have to watch commercials.

But, as has been discussed ad nauseum, I think there is no question that the ratings don't accurately reflect the people actually watching Days, whether by DVR (more than a day later), SoapNet (and I know they have separate ratings), online clips, or even those that "watch" by reading Prevuze. I realize that those who aren't watching and are just reading Prevuze shouldn't count in the ratings, but I think it is a reflection of those who are still interested in the show.

Ratings will never be accurate for any show until every household in the country is counted, in some way or other. I don't put much stock in the current system of measurement, because it's not representative, despite what Nielsen would like us to believe.

I agree. It seems like with so many people with cable, there would be a better way to gauge ratings. They should be able to tell what channel is on (even if you're not watching). Not sure we could get everyone because some are still on antenna, but it would be a considerable portion.

Well, even that won't be a problem much longer with the nationwide digital transition next month.

In this day and age, there really is no excuse for not having a more efficient way to measure ratings.
