What the fuck? No Dark Knight for "Best Picture." No Nolan for Director? Sigh, at least Heath got nominated.

Sharongate, bitches!

Oops, I posted a topic in the Parlour, please delete, Kenny. :)

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button leads the pack with 13 nominations, and Slumdog Millionaire is second with 10 nominations. Milk is third with 9 nominations. The Dark Knight is fourth with 8 nominations.

My thoughts:

Great to see Kate Winslet in LEAD for The Reader. Though Weinstein and company campaigned for that performance to be considered Supporting this award season, it was clearly a Lead role.

The Reader totally bitch-slapped The Dark Knight. Weinstein did his thing and got the Academy voters to really go with this overall underwhelming picture.

I'm so happy for Melissa Leo getting that Lead nominations for Frozen River. It was a very deserving performance. I'm a bit sad that Sally Hawkins didn't make the final cut for Happy-Go-Lucky, but I'm not surprised she didn't, but she did win the two big critics awards.

Supporting Actress is BY FAR the best category. I'm so glad Marisa Tomei, Taraji P. Henson, and Amy Adams made the final cut.

As I continued to say all this award season, I'm not surprised that The Dark Knight was snubbed from the major categories. The BAFTA snub coupled with Weinstein's brilliant campaigning for The Reader really sealed the deal. It's about politics folks, Warner Brothers' campaign for The Dark Knight was horribly in-your-face and obnoxious, which may have turned many voters off. That coupled with the fact the Academy tends to skew older and no comic-book film has ever gotten in for Best Picture. I, for the record, believe The Dark Knight DESERVED to get the slot The Reader got, but I see why it didn't happen.

As for my predictions. Even though The Curious Case of Benjamin Button got the most nominations, it won't win Best Picture, which is often the case. This solidified more to me that Slumdog Millionaire will walk away with the top prize at the end of award season. It looks like the little film that could will win Best Picture, after all.

I also think this is Kate Winslet's year to win that elusive Best Actress prize. Hathaway might have gotten more support from the critics, but Winslet has the buzz and momentum.

LoL, no problem. Thanks for thinking of us though!

I haven't seen 90% of the movies that are nominated. I guess that's the bad thing about living in smalltown Indiana (among other things) -- the obscure films never reach our theaters. For the ones that do, I'm usually never interested in seeing them, LoL.

I am not too surprised Dark Knight didn't get the Best Picture nomination. It just isn't the type of movie the Academy will give that honor to. Whether we see that way or not, the Academy sees it simply as a summer blockbuster with not that much "depth". Best Picture movies most times tend to be dramatic movies where Dark Knight probably gets viewed more as an action movie.

I am glad Heath got the nomination because his verison of the Joker was amazing. He gave the character depth than the typical comic book character.

Also glad Brad Pitt got a nomination as well. He was really good in Benjamin Buttons and that was a much better movie than I had expected. Otherwise I haven't really seen any of the other movies that were nominated. I don't mind the dramatic/arty type that tend to get nominated, it just that none of them seemed like they would be all that entertaining.

King I am so with you on Tropic Thunder. What horrible embarrassing mistake.

Now, I really hope Kate Winslet finally winds this damn thing. As long as she wins I will automatically call this a successful award year!

Hey, I guess good acting is good acting no matter how ridiculous the writing may be, LoL.

That said, RDJ's nomination is a complete joke, IMO.

LMAO!

I am with you guys.

I am sad that Will Smith didn't get ANY awards accolades for Seven Pounds (like not SAG or GG even.) He was so good.

Marisa Tomei was really outstanding in the Wrestler.

And Color me shocked at Changeling getting snubbed. It wasn't really snubbed, snubbed, but for A Clint Eastwood Movie, it was.

'Tropic Thunder' sucked! Tom Cruise was the only good part of the movie and he is hardly in it.

I am glad Heath got a nomination!

Wow...

I wasn't expecting Dark Knight or Wall E to make it. I knew that the old bunch of old coots who can't seem to get the stick out of their ass would not disappoint and they didn't. However, what makes this an even bigger embarrassment is what they chose to nominate in place of DK and/or Wall E.

SM is fine. I understand that. Milk...fine. Deserved. I knew BB would get in there. I wasn't that big on it but I can see it. Frost/Nixon was ok but I felt it was not one that HAD to be nominated. But THE READER?! WTF?! That movie got mixed reviews at best and got like no pop until the few weeks.

I really don't get this. I just don't. DK made the most money since Titanic (which was nominated) and I know the numbers were adjusted for inflation but still. In this economy, it made an impact for the industry. It had a major impact on film in general (IMAX action scenes, all the records it broke, DVD and Blu Ray records it broke, forever changed the way people look at films like this) and it was by far the most talked about movie this year. It also had some themes in there that resonated and made you think. I don't even care about them winning. It should at least be nominated. It did what films are supposed to do. It should have been up there. I know some thing it's overrated but on impact alone it should've been up there. It's not like films like Titanic, Chicago, etc were much better.

Same goes for Wall E. If any film could be considered "art" this year, it's that one. It had everything and it took you to places you never imagined. It was a unique film and one that made a big impact and resonated with many, especially with the environmental issues it referred to.

Both these films were among the best reviewed of the year. In Dark Knight's case, the DGA and WGA were on it's side. The CC's were too. I should've known when the GG snubbed them that there was no chance. I still held it some semblance of hope but the GG should've eaten up Dark Knight and/or Wall E. Ugh.

I mean, they couldn't even throw Christopher Nolan a nod for director? I know they got 8 nods but that just makes this omission even more embarrassing. I'm happy for Heath and, as if there was any doubt, he will win, especially now. They already alienated a hell of alot of people so they will try to soften the blow so even if Heath's win was ever in doubt, it won't be now.

RDJ was great in Tropic. The movie was ok. Very unique but he played a unique role and I understand why he is up there. It's about the performance. The movie does not matter in acting categories. The performance in the movie is being judged and he is worthy. Plus, they probably wanted to reward his comeback this year. If The Soloist had come out on time, I bet he would've gotten the nod for that. Cruise was funny but his GG nod was laughable. I have no problem with this. Again, it's like throwing the fans they alienated a bone to make sure they watch.

I'm really pulling for Mickey Rourke and Kate Winslet. I enjoyed Hathaway too and she was who I was pulling for but Winslet has waited alot longer. Now that she has a chance, I want her to win. Her speech and Mickey's were the most fun and genuine at the GG's so I really look forward to whatever moments possible wins for them bring.

Glad they snubbed Gran Torino and Eastwood too. Springsteen being snubbed is also a big WTF.

All in all, they pissed off alot of people today. And they wonder why the ratings are down. Sure, some will tune in for Hugh Jackman as host with his popularity and for Brad and Angelina and for RDJ and Heath but, ultimately, they killed any chance of making this the huge night it could've been. Even just nominated one of the people pleasing films would've helped but they couldn't even do that. If they didn't want DK in there, give it to Wall E. I understand arthouse films need support and they can't rely on box office receipts as proof of their success but enough is enough. it's like reverse discrimination in regards to these films. 10 years ago, DK or Wall E would've probably been up there. Now, the Academy is so out of touch it's sad to see. It's about picking the best in film and I don't feel they did and they will pay for it . I think the Academy thinks they have enough mainstream pop, as I described above, to get by but I think they will be surprised. Maybe the ratings will be a little up from last year but they could've surged if they hadn't been the biased assholes they are.

This has almost inspired me to assemble my own film awards LOL.

I haven't seen Tropic Thunder, but of the reviews I read/head it was Tom Cruise's performance which was the one everyone was talking about. I wouldn't have been surprised if he had been nominated with the talk about that, but would not have expected one for RDJ.

Both were talked about, as was Stiller's directing given it was his directorial debut.

It was a unique film. I think the problem is many went into it thinking they would bust a gut laughing but it wasn't like that. I enjoyed it but I didn't think it was as great as I expected it to be. I still thought RDJ was great in it. That part was a tough role to play.

I feel kind of sad for Warner Brothers. They spent a ridiculous amount of money campaigning for The Dark Knight and they're re-releasing it tomorrow and they only did that initially with the hope they'd get a Best Picture nomination, and build momentum with the re-release. It backfired, nonetheless. LOL!

It's still a shame the The Reader of all films took The Dark Knight's spot.

Interesting enough, the film they gave away, Slumdog Millionaire (though they're splitting the profits with Fox Searchlight), is the front-runner to win the Best Picture, and they also co-distributed The Curious Case of Benjamin Button with Paramount.

I think a lot of the hype has to be with that it's this year's "little film that could." Kind of like what Juno was last year, and what Little Miss Sunshine was the year before. However, unlike those films, Slumdog Millionaire is a drama, which gives it a better chance of winning the Oscar, and right now, it looks like the favorite.

I know!

I will agree that the campaign was a bit too much but it's not that often a movie involving a comic book hero does what this one did. I'm just glad Heath is up there exactly a year after his death.

I guess it upsets me more because it was The Reader that took it's spot. I mean, if the spot went to something I felt deserved to be there or that had pleased alot of critics and people, then fine. That is just ridiculous, especially when Wall E is sitting there too.

It seems the re-release is just in IMAX so I don't think it's a big deal. They are trying to sell the technology aspect.

AS for SM, I wasn't in love with it but it is good enough to warrant nod and it actually did well and made some money for itself with all the awards publicity. I totally get why it's there.

I just want to see the best rewarded. There should be no bias involved.

Sadly, I'm not surprised TDK wasn't nominated for Picture. After it didn't get a nom from the GGs, I knew it wouldn't happen with the Oscars. I'm just glad that Heath got nominated. Even after winning the GG, I still wasn't 100% convinced he would get an Oscar nom.
