The network has handed a pilot pickup to "Absolutely Fabulous," an U.S. version of the cult British comedy about a neurotic fashion publicist, Edina, and her best friend Patsy, an outrageous fashion editor, who drive Eddie's sensible teen daughter, Saffron, up the wall with their wild behavior.

Christine Zander penned the set in Los Angeles adaptation, which is produced by Sony Pictures TV, BBC Worldwide Prods. and Tantamount.

Zander is exec producing the pilot with Jennifer Saunders, who wrote and starred in the original series as Edina, as well as BBC Worldwide Prods.' Ian Moffitt and Tantamount's Mitch Hurwitz, Eric Tannenbaum and Kim Tannenbaum.

"Ab Fab" marks the latest pilot pickup for Fox, which in the past week ordered four other comedy pilots, "Walorsky," "The Station," "Two Dollar Beer" and "Sons of Tucson" and three drama pilots, "Maggie Hill," "Human Target" and an untitled reincarnation project.

Fox originally picked up the project in the fall with a script commitment plus penalty.
There have been several attempts to develop "Ab Fab" for American audiences, but this is the first one to go to pilot.

The fact that Jennifer Saunders is involved makes me very happy!

Wow, Fox has a lot going on... You think that maybe Fox would consider expanding to three hours in primetime now that NBC is out? Cause I'm sure that Fox can now beat NBC at 10pm with Leno being on at that time on NBC.

I dunno. I don't see an American version of AbFab working. The British aspect of the humor was a HUGE part of what made the show so side-splittingly funny.

FOX should definitely consider expanding but I think many, if not most, affiliates have 10PM news that probably do pretty well

I look for FOX to definitely expand within the next 2 years.

They are quite a few big hits right now (House, 24, Idol, Family Guy)

Fox Eyes Kristen Johnston for American AbFab

The eccentric British sitcom Absolutely Fabulous (better known as AbFab), which was a hit stateside in the ’90s, is being remade in the United States this year, with a pilot episode ordered by Fox.

Casting is not officially complete, but late last week Kristen Johnston (3rd Rock From the Sun) participated in a table-read of the script, according to Variety. Recent appearances for Johnston include a role in the film Bride Wars as well as guest spots on Sex and the City and ER. Also participating in the table-read was actress Kathryn Hahn (Revolutionary Road).

If Johnston and Hahn are cast in the pilot, they will play the roles of overindulging, fame- and fashion-obsessed Edina and Patsy, respectively.

The original AbFab was written by Jennifer Saunders, who played Edina, with Joanna Lumley as Patsy, and aired on the BBC network. The American AbFab script was written by Christine Zander, who will also be executive producer of the show, along with Saunders. (Advocate.com)

They've been trying to pull off an American AbFab for years (going all the way back to Roseanne Barr). I'll be stunned if this finally gets off the ground.

I doubt it. The O&O's want their 10PM newcasts(ad revenue, etc.) and FOX makes more money as a network because they only have two hours of programming during the week(three on Sunday).

Plus, FOX briefly tried doing 10PM programming on Sunday Nights, but those programs were quickly canceled(Flying Blind) or pushed to a better hour(Herman's Head). Has never been tried again.
