Some tidbits from Thaao Penghlis' online chat; March 7th, 2009
Topic Started: Mar 10 2009, 12:58 PM (2,966 Views)
Ellie

Thaao Penghlis and Leann Hunley conducted a lively online chat on Saturday. Included was the following:

- Tony will be found dead, but there will be no funeral (as Thaao said in the chat, "just like no wedding").

- Thaao was asked whose idea it was to bring back Anna. Thaao said that "the seed was planted three years ago", but that Hogan Sheffer was the one who was interested; Sheffer "saw our past history and loved the characters". However, "the newer writer didn't", and with the transition in writers came the transition in storylines, "especially the DiMera feud with the brothers".

- Thaao said he told Ken Corday that he thought it was "hostile" that Tony had been killed so many times and that Anna was not there to support Tony. Thaao said Corday "just put his head down and didn't look at me".

- Leann spoke about when the Anna character originally debuted on Days and about Anna's transformation into more of a comical character. Leann said that "I think it was kind of a little bit of chemistry and the more confident I was feeling especially by making the cameraman chuckle"; she said that "they didn't like the funny side, they wanted it to be serious but I'd change it."

- Regarding Thaao's current Emmy pre-nom, he said "the studio put up Peter Reckell and James Reynolds and I was a secret ballot and got it."

- Leann spoke about her favorite scene (of the current run, presumably): "when I came back last year and was wearing a green face mask." She was also asked about her first onscreen kiss: "It was about 25 years ago. I think it was when I drugged Thaao and married him and woke up with a smile on his face. Those were the days when they knew how to write."

What a cowardly response from Corday to TP :puke:

Corday is a douchebag. I can't believe that his response to Thaao's concerns was just to put his head down like a sad little puppy dog. I hate him.

Yay for Hogan Sheffer actually appreciating the Tony/Anna pairing.

Not surprised there won't be a funeral. Tony didn't get any screentime devote to just him while he was alive. Why would he now that he's dead?

I'm going to assume that it was a admission that it was Thaao who "planted the seed" for Anna's return. And it's always been obvious that Higley had no intentions on ever writing for Tony and Anna. When they did have a storyline, it was during the strike. And then the stuff they had during the hospital lockdown was a result of Ed Scott's work, not Higley's. Once Higley came back, Tomlin was on, and Anna was never seen again and Tony's airtime was reduced greatly.

Part of me feels bad for Corday based on what Thaao said. You can tell that he really loves his cast and crew. He sees them as family. But he has gotten himself into jam after jam after jam in the last few years and now decisions are being made that are hurting those family-like relationships he has with the cast. I bet if Corday could have it his way, everyone would be on the show. However, that's not possible with the money.

I get why the cast would nominate Reckell for the pre-nomination, but I don't get Reynolds or Penghlis. They were not lead this year. At all. If anyone should've been nominated over both actors, it was James Scott. He was the lead actor this year.

Tony wasn't that great to begin with.

And Anna?....completely forgettable.

Ken knows the right things to do.
He has made the show so much more watchable for me.

So far he has dumped almost every character I've hated...LoL.

Believe me, it isn't Ken Corday making these decisions. If you're liking what you see, you have Gary Tomlin to thank for this.

I always thought Higley attempted to write for Tony/Anna at the beginning with the ad agencies war/intern storyline, but it got really bad response and I think the budget made impossible to even show Tony/Anna´s offices as much as needed, so they let it fizzle.

But there was some honest attempt to give them something and even adress the original dynamic of Tonny/Anna relationship and I think that was Higley´s work.

As for Corday, that´s nothing new. So many characters/actors stayed way too long with nothing to do just because Corday was too much coward to let them go. And some his attempts to save his face were downright ridiculous, like turning Adrienne into Bonnie clone with no story/place on the show just because he felt ashamed to let Judy Evans just go.

That´s why someone like Tomlin was needed years ago.

Its more than obvious that this is all Tomlin's doing, especially based on Corday's reactions...I can't believe he just put his head down, though. As much as anyone could feel bad for him, that truthfully is a little rude.

And its no surprise Hogan liked Tony and Anna, and Thaao(and maybe LeAnn) probably did plant the seeds, as he said. Only thing is, Hogan didn't seem interested in writing for them after Tony was rescued from that island.

I feel bad for Thaao and LeAnn, and Tony and Anna. Its like the characters are cursed...Anna's never really been written for over the course of these past two years since she returned, and Tony always is made into a crazy villian(and later turns out to be Andre), or just purely isn't written for.

Bringing back Anna was all stupid. If you aren´t able to write for three supercouples already on the show you don´t solve things by bringing another. Sheffer never understood the moment these couples reunites they are lock together forever and it will be almost impossible to write for them. First, he screwed Stayla, senselessly rushing their reunion and next he created that really stupid two weeks arc for the real Tony´s return and his reunion with Anna. He attempted to plant some conflict between them and Roman but it never went anywhere, as he was much more interested in the crazy André planting bombs left and right and playing Salem´s Joker.

I guess if you call firing almost EVERYONE over 40 good for the show.....then you should be VERY happy! Days use to be about love, romance, angst and passion! Now you just have soft porn sex between hair model actors/actresses in elevators and on tables. Days use to be about building character's background and history. Now we have Melanie! :puke: Maybe those people who didn't watch Days in the late 70s, 80s and 90s should check out some of those tapes to see what GREAT WRITING REALLY did look like! :hail: I started watching in the 1995 and it was my appreciation of Days past, that makes me so sad to see what happening on Days today! :embarrassed: JMO :soapbox:

I agree the writers could write more romance. Could you please tell me in your opinion who are the hair models and why? and who in the cast in your opinion could pull off a great romantic storyline?

Tony and Anna shouldn't have been brought back at all. Anna was mostly forgotten and ever since he returned after his nineties stint, Tony/Andre has been a nuisance.

Melanie is definitely one of the "hair models" of this show! I know they were trying to get another "bad girl or bitch" for the show, but you still have both Nicole and Sami on this show. With the whole purpose of every soap to have the bad girl have thay guy that is her weakness, with these two already having a strong following that cross ade demographics, the necessity of Melanie has still perplexed me! :shame:

As far as romantic duos. I'm not sure there are any good ones now. :embarrassed: I guess you have a nice possibility with Will and Mia. They just have to allow these two to actually fall in love first and not rush this thing! Let us as an audience fall in love with them as a couple and begin to root for them! This could also I maybe with either Sami and Nicole's many men! I could see either EJ and Sami, or Sami & Rafe, or Nicole & Brady or Nicole & EJ! IF it were written write! Right now I don't root for anyone on this show except Bo & Hope, and right now they're trying to ONCE AGAIN screw with them! :frustration: Leave these two alone! This was one of the couples that you truly got to see not the chemistry of these two from the get go. But what romance, longing and two people falling in love in the soap world looked like! :makeout: Days can still do this, I think, if they just look to their past history and its couples! Still. That's just my opinion. :eyeroll:

And another thing on how Tony's going to be exiting, especially now that he's not getting a funeral:

I feel like that, even though I get Tomlin/Whitesell/Higley want to be doing something exciting by having this whodunnit, they should have just had Tony and Anna leave town if they want to close the chapter of Tony DiMera, and Anna DiMera, forever. I mean Tony has died...what, a million times now? I just think it would have been better and more final for Tony and Anna to have their happily ever after.

The
Melanie/Stephanie/Chelsea/Philip/Daniel/Chloe/Lucas.. Including to a certain but much lesser extent the
Ejami/Ejole/Safe Dynamic appeals to the >Teen to Twentysomthings audience.(This Ejami/Ejole/Safe grouping has atleast some story growth and potential for depth)
The same audiece that watches.. OC/One Tree Hill/BH 90210/Laguna beach, The Real World, and Various reality hook up shows.
Sex without romance (Because frankly Teens dont have a true understanding of whats really Romantic) They enjoy the casual nature of the "Love stories" we have seen lately. They are rooting for who is "Hot".. soft porn is what they are used to so it seems appropriate, and natural, They dont need "Bonds, and growth" that create an atmosphere for love and romance.

Personally for my taste, we have enough of these shows already, In prime time, and the ultra popular *Reality shows*
I find it sad that Daytime today feels the need to reduce themself to this genre.. These bad choices more then anything has been the downfall of soaps.. I enjoy younger cast members, but unless they are given growth time and story my investment in them is non-existant.

I agree with you. Especially since this murder mystery is based on lame motivations that, unless your psychotic, you would never kill someone over. Plus, Tony's death has NO long lasting ramifications. It's useless.

What a terrible waste to dispose of actors and rich in history characters in such a cavalier manner.
Its just another glaring example of Terrible writing, production, and managment.
