'90210' shocker: Leading man Milligan to exit
Mar 30, 2009, 05:34 PM | by Michael Ausiello

90210's new boss lady, Rebecca Rand Kirshner Sinclair, recently told me that the soap's second season would be "significantly" different than the first, and, man, she wasn't kidding.

Sources confirm to me exclusively that Dustin Milligan, who plays affable jock (and one half of 90210's central super couple) Ethan, won't be returning to the show in the fall -- at least not full time.

Reps for The CW and producer Paramount declined comment, but a 90210 insider confirms that Milligan's contract option is not being picked up for next season. The source adds that the door is being left open for the actor to briefly appear in the fall to wrap up Ethan's story.

All indications are that Milligan's exit was strictly a creative decision. "Everyone loves Dustin," maintains the insider. "There was just a feeling that the character had run its course." (Curiously, the news comes just days after Milligan's newbie co-star, Matt Lanter -- a.k.a. bad boy Liam -- confirmed that he was being promoted to a series regular next season.)

The departure of one the show's most high profile leading men is the clearest indication yet that Sinclair's ongoing reboot of the reboot will be anything but minor. Viewers will get their first taste of the Gilmore Girl alum's new vision when 90210 returns from its winter hiatus this Wednesday with a hilariously campy outing that features the primetime soap trifecta: stalkers, street-racing, and scenery-chewing!

Looking ahead to season 2, Sinclair said last month that she wants to "reconceive things visually. There are opportunities to embrace California culture visually in terms of fashion and style; I want it to be more contemporary.

"If Gossip Girl is about youth in New York," she elaborated, "I want to [make 90210] about youth in L.A. and Beverly Hills."

The writer-producer also plans to rely less on 90210 vets such as Jennie Garth, Shannen Doherty, and Tori Spelling to boost ratings. "The show tried to be a lot of things to a lot of people in its first season," she conceded. "I think the center lies with the generation of kids that are in high school now. I'm not interested in casting people for stunt value."

Sinclair, who replaces original show-runners Jeff Judah and Gabe Sachs, said the show will benefit from having a singular vision. "The advantage of having one person -- me -- [in charge] is that scripts, what happens on the set, casting... it all speaks in one voice."

Thoughts on Sinclair's new 90210? Waiting to pass judgment until you see this season's remaining episodes? Is the loss of cute-but-boring Ethan a step in the right or wrong direction? Sound off below!

Thank God! After Annie, of course, Ethan was the worst and most dull character.

And I really like that Matt Lanter is going to be a regular next season!

I think this Sinclair woman has the right ideas (although I'm sad we'll be seeing less of the oldies, though I agree with her that this show should be more about the new generation), and I think Season 2 will be a BIG improvement. Now, if only we could somehow be rid of Shenae Grimes...

I am excited for all of the changes that Sinclair is making. I think she is moving the show in the right direction. Ethan was supposed to be the "bad boy/Dylan" of the show, and he was never up to par....even tacking the BJ scene in the pilot episode.

Also, I am happy to hear that Annie is going to unleash her inner "Brenda" and start developing bitchy-ways. Hopefully, this will make Shenae more tolerable.

The show also needs another male character, IMO. Hopefully they will use Ryan as a contract character on MP, and only use him in a recurring role on 90210. He is pretty much a waste of a contract character otherwise.

LoL, Annie's already a bitch, and I don't think there's enough alcohol in the world to make her acting anymore palatable!

That's what I'm hoping will be the case, too. They don't need him that badly on 90210.

I kinda liked Ethan. He was boring mostly, but I found his character to be unique.

Ethan struck me more as a "Steve Sanders" kinda character. I didn't hate him, but he definately wasnt right as the lead guy.

Unique? LMAO! He's a cookie cutter cardboard of a character! There's absolutely nothing unique or interesting about him. They don't get much more plain than Ethan, LoL.

YAY! It's sad he's losing his job but this is great news! Ethan's horrible and I'm so so so glad the character's leaving!!

I think Kirshner is on the right path, and I cannot wait to see the last 8 episodes and then season 2. I do kinda dislike the fact that she doesn't seem interested in really using Tori, Jennie or Shannen, although I think, if Brenda does adopt Adrianna's baby, that Brenda will get a happy ending and that would be good. I can accept it. I just hope they aren't all dropped completely.

I do think the teens need a parental figure that isn't Debbie or Harry, cause I can't stand them. If Kirshner doesn't want to really rely on Tori, Jennie (who should stay on, as her role, IMO, is important, she is a guidance counselor, after all), Shannen, then she should develop Nat again as that parental figure, much like he was in BH90210.

I swear that just about every guy in my hometown looks like Dustin Milligan.

.....But it's great that the show is seemingly taking the steps in the right direction.

I was meh about Ethan. Getting rid of Shanae would vastly improve the show.

I don't like Shanae Grimes either, but how they hell would they write her off? In following the "formula" of the original, she's one of the "twins" right? lol. And then there's the issue of her parents, also.

They did it with Shannen Doherty on the original. History can always repeat itself...

Milligan grew on me over the course of the season. I think everyone started off kind of boring, but then the show got better.

Jessica Lowndes is still my favorite.

My ideal scenario would for Annie to be killed off, and a griefstricken Harry and Debbie decide to move back to Kansas, leaving Dixon in Beverly Hills with Tabitha who returns from New York (or wherever she is). I'd love it! :)
