Well not really until 1970 when Somerset, The Best of Everything, All My Children, and A World Apart came on. A World Apart is considered by many critics to be the better of the 4 in it's first year, but it didn't make it that long. |

Tyler, Those were it's first 2 years on the air. It took time to build it's audience. Remember CBS and NBC were dominating soaps back then. ABC was relatively new in the soap business. They had GH back in 1963 and then later Dark Shadows became a hit, but both OLTL in 1968 and AMC in 1970 had to build audiences due to the competition they were against. By the 1972/1973 season AMC had struck a chord with young viewers plus Carol Burnett heavily promoted it on her CBS variety show almost every week. She loved the show. If you will even look at the 1970/71 season all the ABC shows except GH are lined up in a row at the bottom. |

I wonder why Nbc soaps went down hill in the late 70's? they were so strong in the first part of the decade. |

I think it was partly due to network/TPTB interference like expanding AW to an hour, and if I'm correct The Doctor's was moved to a different timeslot too. I think DAYS falling has to do with a variety of issues, including the changing of Head Writers. |

So ATWT had roughly 7,440,000 viewers while OLTL had roughly 4,898,000 viewers. Much better than today. Sigh ... |

The same issue of DAYTIME TV has an article about the rising ratings of game shows and it cites these numbers... for the 2 weeks ending January 28, 1972 (for all daytime show, not just soaps) #1 - Hollywood Squares (11.5) #1 - General Hospital (11.5) ----- Newlywed Game (11.1) ----- Jeopardy (9.9) #7 - Sale of the Century #10 - Let's Make a Deal (9.5) #10 - Dating Game (9.5) #10 - Another World (9.5) The article also mentions ATWT being #1 for 11 straight years until it was bumped from the #1 spot in November 1971, first by Days of our Lives and then by General Hospital. |

Matt, Do you know how many total viewers these ratings equates to? We really can't compare ratings points from decade to decade but each point represented a lot smaller number of homes. |

So AW had 5.89 million homes and then each home may have had multiple people watching. |
