Courtesy 'Daytime TV' (November, 1971) Posted Image Premiered: February 2, 1954 CBS-TV According to the article, 'Secret Storm' was the 1st CBS soap to add black actors in response to an order from the network president following the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1968. The article states: "The adding of a black brought a lot of hate mail and the audience rating dipped for four days, then the audience came back to normal." Interestingly, everything I've read states that 'The Brighter Day' had the first black contract actor in its cast shortly before its cancellation in 1962 and 'The Guiding Light' had the Fraziers, a black medical couple, for a couple of years starting in 1966. CAST: Marla Adams as Belle Britton Linden Chiles as Paul Britton Joel Crothers as Ken Stevens Stephanie Braxton as Laurie Stevens Judy Lewis as Susan Carver Lori March as Valerie Northcote Mary K. Wells as Nola Hollister Eleanor Phelps as Grace Tyrrell Gordon Rigsby as Dr. Ian Northcote Jada Rowland as Amy Britton Diane Ladd as Kitty Styles Jane Rose as Aggie Parsons Diane Dell as Lisa Britton Judi Rollin as Didi Clayborne Scott Mefford as Jonathan Styles Steven Gattuso as Clay Clayborne Donnie Melvin as Peter Dunbar Jack Ryland as Frank Carver Liam Sullivan as Allen Dunbar Dennis Cooney as Kevin Kincaid Bernard Barrow as Dan Kincaid Anthony Herrera as Brannigan CREDITS: Executive Producer: Charles Weiss Producer: Robert Costello Writers: Bethel Leslie, Gerry Day Directors: David Roth, Robert Myhrum Associate Director: Andy St. Laurent Associate Producer: Inger Kuhl Production Assistant: Susan Orlikoff Scenic Designer: Charles Brandon Costumes: Ramsey Mosteller Set Decorator: Wes Laws |

Matt, Thank you so much for the NBC shows here : SOMERSET, DAYS OF OUR LIVES, and ANOTHER WORLD. From the late 1960s until the Mid 1970s, these were the finest shows. I never cared for THE DOCTORS, but my mama and grandmother loved it in the miiddle of their NBC line up ~ |
