Branco/Case Interview

TVGuide.ca: Sharon’s been on quite the roller-coaster ride this past year.
Sharon Case: Yes she has! One of the benefits of playing the same character for so many years is that you are really a part of a journey. It’s fun. Today, Sharon’s at a crossroads.

TVG: I’d say. The Phyllis/Nick/Sharon love triangle is one of the best storylines Y&R has ever told. Do you like your squish names?
SC: I don’t really care, but I will say Shick and Phick are not the most attractive names for us!

TVG: When Lynn Marie Latham took over as head writer, she left the Sharon/Nick/Phyllis triangle dangling in the wind. Head writer Maria Arena Bell has wisely re-ignited the love equation.
SC: Maria was smart to revisit the triangle. After Nick married Phyllis, Sharon moved on with her life with Jack. She was busy building her marriage and new life. Unfortunately, Jack and Sharon were not a big super-couple, so it’s no surprise that their marriage wasn’t going to last forever. Sharon lost her identity after Cassie died, and tragically, her marriage to Nick was a casualty. In the process, Sharon clung to Jack for security, normalcy, identity and friendship. Building that marriage and life for two years was important to Sharon. What I liked about Sharon and Jack’s storyline was that it was a typical, modern marriage. They were both lying to each other and, in the end, they ruined a marriage that could have otherwise worked out. They did love each other, but they weren’t in love with each other. Having said that, there were no scud missiles being launched or land mines being stepped on. There were a lot of subtle, quiet issues in their relationship. In many ways, it was an American marriage.

TVG: Were your surprised when Sharon became unhinged and unstable?
SC: A little bit, yes, but it all makes sense and I welcomed the challenge. No matter how [head writer] Maria Arena Bell writes the storyline, it’s all up to me to decide how functional Sharon appears to people. I get into a lot of debates with our directors on how to play the story. I do believe people who are experiencing a meltdown of sorts appear to be fully functional to other people, and that’s how I’ve been playing the story. It’s not one-dimensional.

TVG: Were you shocked when Phyllis and Nick had an affair?
SC: Actually, I was one of the people who suggested that Nick and Phyllis have an affair. The head writer at the time wanted to break up Sharon and Nick because they had been together for 10 years. After Cassie’s death, the writers had decided Nick was going to have an affair, but they had another woman in mind. When they asked me what I thought, I suggested Phyllis. And that’s what they ended up writing.

TVG: You won supporting actress in 1999. Were your surprised?
SC: I was because it was my first year being nominated in the supporting category. I had previously been nominated in the younger category, so I was surprised because I was relatively young. It can take a while to break into supporting, let alone win. I haven’t been nominated in a while because I’ve submitted myself in the lead category. I may just stop competing all together.

TVG: No! You have to submit yourself in 2010.
SC: Josh and I weren’t nominated when Cassie died. A year later when Nick and Sharon divorced, we were not recognized either — which I personally thought was some of our best work. Even more so than when Cassie died. I feel Joshua did the best work of his career during that storyline.

I was wondering the same thing.

For some reason, the first person that popped into my mind was Christine.

It was definitely Christine. It was becoming obvious on screen at the time when she was defending Daniel.

Both choices in my opinion were equally :puke:

I think you're right, I remember her hanging around in the story...she shared quite a few scenes with Nick around that time, too.

That was RIGHT after Cassie's death though, it became obvious they were teasing Phyllis around early fall / late summer.

This is the link to Sharon Case's Emmy win...

And Nick and Cricket??? Gag me. Cricket is, quite possibly, the most self-righteously annoying character in Y&R history!!! Hope her return is short and sweet, unless they plan to bring back Thom Bierdz or Michael Damian to tie up loose ends.
