ABC cancels 'Samantha Who'

Show was expected to return next season

Show, which had been expected to return, got caught up in this year’s belt-tightening trend at the networks. According to an insider close to the show, decision to scrap “Samantha” came down to numbers. The show couldn’t slash it budget deep enough to make a third-season pickup work, they said.

ABC had been mulling a plan to decrease “Samantha’s” budget by changing the way the show is shot - moving to multiple cameras, rather than the single camera now used. Alphabet was looking to slash as much as $500,000 per episode from the show’s budget.

But “Samantha” became expendable once ABC picked up such a hefty number of new series for next year - 10 in total. With that large a crop of frosh series, it no longer made sense to bring “Samantha” back or promote it. “Samantha” was initially a strong performer for the Alphabet on Monday nights, but faltered this season after moving to Thursdays.

“Samantha” comes from ABC Studios. Cecelia Ahern and Donald Todd created the show; Todd and Peter Traugott are exec producers.

Ugh, not surprised. It was so obvious ABC wanted it gone when they moved it to Thursdays.

LoL, I knew King would approve!

I like Jean Smart and Christina Appelgate, and the actress from that show with Lauren Graham, so I hope they bounce back!

The show with Lauren Graham was entitled Gilmore Girls and the actress' name is Melissa McCarthy!

I'm shocked too because it had a devoted fanbase and the network seemed to love it. They were always promoting it and I thought with all Christina Applegate went through last year, they would at least give it another year.

First off, I hated the show. Good cast but hated it. Too gimmicky and the premise is not one that works for a show that you want to have staying power. I knew there was no way of cutting the budget that much given the cast.

It would've never lasted more then 5 episodes without the DWTS lead in. That is why it had so many fans in the first place. It complemented DWTS well and appealed to many of it's fans. I knew once it moved to Thursday's it would kill it. It can't stand on it's own. It needed that lead in and it showed. It still did ok ratings-wise but it suffered a steep drop and it seemed like it kept dropping so the long-term ratings pattern did not look good but I thought they would at least give it another year or try harder to keep it around, like I said.

Christian Applegate has reason to celebrate, I suppose. The show lasted longer then her shows usually last LOL.

I saw it a couple of times and thought it was ok.

Christina should do DWTS.

Yeah, she should. That is a good idea.

In fact, ABC should've thought of that when they moved her show to Thursday's. They could've had her on this season and used her to promote the show's move off Monday nights. Too late now.

King is right. She does deserve better then this show.
