Kathy Bates, Tim Curry Join Alice TV Movie

Sci Fi (soon to be known as Syfy) is following up the success of Tin Man, its peculiar revamp of The Wizard of Oz, with another four-hour storybook fable from writer-director Nick Willing: this time, it's a lightly modernized adaptation of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland slated to air this December.

Kathy Bates and Tim Curry were just tapped to join the cast of Alice, Bates as the Queen of Hearts and Curry as Dodo. Okay, that's not exactly innovative casting, but we know these two pros can deliver.

Already cast are Caterina Scorsone as Alice Hamilton, a fiercely independent twentysomething who suddenly finds herself on the other side of a looking glass, and Colm Meaney (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Stargate Atlantis) as the King of Hearts.

Other old friends in the cast include Matt Frewer (Eureka) as the White Knight, Andrew Lee Potts (Primeval) as the Hatter, and Philip Winchester (Crusoe) as the Jack of Hearts.

Commissioned in March, production is already under way in Vancouver, says The Hollywood Reporter.

This project is not to be confused with the Tim Birton Alice in Wonderland project slated for next year, starring Mia Wasikowska, Johnny Depp (as the Mad Hatter), Alan Rickman, and Helena Bonham Carter as a giant Red Queen. That will be a very different movie.

The new "Alice" promises to be different than previous incarnations (more than a few of which were produced by RHI). The project is written and directed by Nick Willing, who also did Sci Fi's highly rated "Wizard of Oz" revamp "Tin Man."

"We thought 'Alice' was the perfectly underlying material to tell a classic story with a modern twist," Halmi said. "We'll have new incredible worlds and a more grown-up feel."

The new version, from writer-director Nick Willing, centers on Alice Hamilton, a fiercely independent twentysomething who suddenly finds herself on the other side of a looking glass.

Executive producing the mini are Matthew O'Connor and Lisa Richardson from Reunion Pictures, Jamie Brown from Studio Eight and RHI Entertainment's Robert Halmi, Sr. and Robert Halmi, Jr.

I loved Tin Man too. I wonder how this is going to turn out. I'm way more excited for Tim Burton's, though.

After reading a summary of it, I'm not, which is sad because I was.

I'm sure it'll be good, but, I dunno, I was kind of let down. I expected him to do something a little more epic and different.

I still don't get the point of the network's name change.
