It has been a real-life cliffhanger bigger than the one faced by her character Izzie in the season finale of "Grey's Anatomy": Will series co-star Katherine Heigl return to "Grey's" next season?

Now sources say that Heigl's option on the medical drama has been picked up, meaning the actress will continue on the series.

The news comes on the heels of word leaking that Heigl's pal on the show, T.R. Knight, won't return next season.

ABC won't confirm any casting for its flagship drama series.

The lives of both actors' characters were left hanging in the balance in the "Grey's" season finale last month.

Izzie, who had been diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic cancer in the brain and liver, underwent a successful brain surgery but lost her short-term memory and suddenly flat-lined in the final minutes of the finale.

Heigl has had a somewhat rocky tenure on "Grey's."

The series made her a household name, launched her successful movie career and earned her an Emmy in 2007. But tensions began to creep in, escalating last summer when Heigl pulled herself out of Emmy consideration, attributing her decision to the lack of good stories for her character.

She also was rumored to have lobbied for a release from the show to focus on her booming feature career.

But that was a year ago. This past season, the storyline of Izzie's cancer was central to the show's creative resurgence. Additionally, the actress had stated publicly that she wanted to continue on the show.

They made the right casting choice..I didn't want to watch Alex fall apart again over Izzie's death...

I'm happy she's staying on. A year ago, I would have been thrilled to see Izzie killed off, but the character was totally redeemed this past season, for me.

Me too. :( :(

They should have tried to keep these quiet, now we all know who lives and dies.

Me too but for different reasons. I'm not a fan of television projecting someone so close to death miraculously recovering. It gives people false hope and makes the series look dumb.

I did some research and only around 18% of people with stage 4 metastatic melanoma live longer than 5 years after being diagnosed. Had they not made her so sick I could have bought it easier.

Not that it necessarily makes it any easier to logistically swallow that Izzie survives, but I'm sure when the writers came up with this story, they honestly didn't know if they were going to have Izzie live or die, and with all the drama and hoopla over Katherine Heigl, I'm sure they thought there was a strong possibility that they would end up killing Izzie off.

This sucks!

As much as I love Izzy,
it would be more dramatic if they both died.

So Izzy recovers and then what?

How very boring.
