DAYS: James Scott's acting

Am I the only one that really like his acting these days? When most actors scream and yell it comes of as annoying and cheesy but I love when James does it. When James play scenes like that I can feel the pain, I can feel the anger.

I keep seeing posts with people saying they want EJ to act calm, suave and confident because that's what he does best. Yeah when EJ was in control like back in 2006/early 2007 but with everything that has happened, Tony's death, Stefano being kidnaped, and now finding out Grace was his daughter right after she died, it's only natural for EJ to behave the way he does. He is not in control, and he goes crazy because of it. I just finished watching the episodes from the week Grace died and that was the best acting I have seen from James but most people seemed to hate it and think it was over the top. Like I said before in my post, with most actors I would have thought so as well but not with James. He is so convincing when he plays it.

Anyone agree with me or am I crazy for thinking this?

I think James is a very inconsistent actor. When he's good, he's excellent, but when he's bad, he's just terrible.

I, personally, am one of the people that don't like the way he plays angry. I absolutely think he goes over the top most of the times he plays anger, and I can't say I'm a fan of that.

ICAM with you. Great post!

I think James has done a brilliant job of portraying EJ's current mindset. In the past, we saw a calm, calculating and confident EJ because he was almost always in control of every situation. Even when things weren't quite going his way it was never OUT of control. But this situation with Grace has completely thrown him for a loop and I think James has made some very brave and bold acting choices in portraying the difference between EJ being prepared for a show down or threat vs. EJ being completely thrown for a loop. The situation he's in right now is completely different and foreign from anything else that EJ has ever experienced, so I think James decision to show us sides of EJ we've never seen before has been spot on.

I agree with Mason. I usually don't have a problem with him but I have to say that his performance during the reveal was probably my least favorite.

I don't think James is overacting one bit. EJ had no idea that Sami would hide a child from him. He did not see it coming. EJ is out of control but James knows very well what he is doing. He is the best in my opinion and one day we are going to see him win an academy award.

Inconsistent sums it up and my fangirl side wants to say it's because he's a true artist, how many piles of crap do artist turn out that just don't end up being a masterpiece. He has really lost his flair for this role and I am thinking his time is up. Soap vets really don't get enough credit for the stamina of being on for years.. I don't mind if he does OTT angry. In fact, James in the role of EJ used to remind me of Christian Bale in American Psycho so it's not like I can't appreciate slobbering, ugly, snot flying acting, it's just James is not getting me to connect with EJ anymore and most of the time i feel embarassed.

After all... tomorrow is another day!

You are not the only one really enjoying it, Sindacco.

I know logically EJ is a bad man who has done many bad things, but because of the way JS plays him I can't help but root for him all the way.

I also know a lot of people (including myself) are not too crazy about the way the writers have jerked this character around in so many different directions... and I think a lot of the disappointment with James's acting now may stem from some people who want EJ back to being the 2006 ubervillain preferring it more when he was the indestructible, impossible-to-stop, never-frazzled super-creep while there are others who enjoyed the more sanitized and romantically inclined EJ from early 2008.

I prefer something in between those two things and while I am not sure this current version is where I want EJ to end up, I find this EJ right now that is so raw and capable of being hurt that he actually has to yell and lash out because he's so devastated to be very captivating. I can't wait to see where this leads and what will happen when EJ finds out the truth about Nicole, mainly because I can't wait to find out what JS will do with him.

One point I do have to make though, is I do think the dialogue for EJ is worse under the current regime than it may have been in the past. I could stand to get a lot more witty one-liners from EJ like we used to get in the past.

IIRC you posted that you did not enjoy his shaking choices in his reaction to the Grace reveal.

I don't know if it's just the haircut he got since then but I think he has stepped up his game the last week or so since that episode.

I think even when he's 'good', it's over the top. He has a lot riding on that english accent, imo. I'd really like to see him outside of a daytime setting.

I think he has been absolutely horrible. It started going downhill around December. He was cringe-worthy during the reveal, and almost adolescent like this week. It's not the character. The character could do, and has done, what he is doing with out playing nah nah nah boo boo with Sami the way James is playing it. I'm embarassed to be watching him. He used to be my favorite actor (not character) on the show.

I will share one small criticism after watching yesterday's show.

I am not a fan of the way EJ reacts when he first sees Johnny and goes to pick him up. I can't even really put a finger on it - but he just seems really, really loud with the groaning as he goes to pick him up.

There. I said it. ;)

I have to say that I think JS is one of the best actors on Days right now. Having said that, his work right after he found out about Grace wasn't his best IMO. It was the crying part to me that was a little over the top. Maybe AS just outshined him in this particular area THIS TIME.

Normally speaking, I think JS hits all his marks and he's always kept me rooting for EJ no matter how awful EJ might have been at the time. I do think he improved (and maybe it was the haircut that helped ;) ) during the funeral scene (loved his speech). I also think that he and AS were phenominal in the scenes at the DiMansion after the funeral. Their chemistry is unmatched.

I think JS will be on top of his game for the remainder of the story.........and I certainly don't think he's past his prime for soaps.........Days would have a huge hole if he was gone. He's the best male actor IMO on Days right now, bar none.

I agree that James' acting has been excellent lately. The reveal about Grace seemed to shake EJ to his foundations, no pun intended. And because of the way James sees his character, he chose to give us a very raw and what some would say ugly performance. I saw a man who was not afraid to show the underbelly of a one whose heart had been ripped out of his chest. EJ never, ever believed that Sami could have been so cruel to him and he reacted accordingly. Just on a superficial level, I did find that very often of late his hair impeded my viewing. The hair stylists overuse of gunk, the horrendous length, combined with the heavy scruff took my attention away much of the time.

Now he has had a trim, I can focus more on the performance and not the extraneous distractions. I think it is fascinating how James is playing EJ so cold and calculating. It is a cover of course. He has never once said, that I remember, how much this hurt, but he has shown us and it was riveting, as is this phase of payback. The only thing EJ can think of is lashing out now. He seems beyond reason. Good choices for James, as that is exactly how I would expect EJ to react. He has never known what true love is all about. He has been a pawn for Stefano his whole life, from his conception. So how does a man deal with the blows he has taken from a woman he adores? Not well, it seems.

Great stuff. James and Alison have had me watching every day they are on together.
