Thom Bierdz feared coming out would ruin his career, but now he's returning to Y&R and his character, Phillip Chancellor III, is gay just like him! His character was killed in 1989 after "dying" in a drunk driving accident. A Y&R insider tells The Globe that "Phillip is GAY and faked his death because he couldn't continue living a lie!" Bierdz, 47, was hired to reprise the role he played for 3 years and he couldn't be more thrilled. When he started on the show in 1986, he was told by various Y&R show bosses to keep his sexuality under wraps, which he did. Then weeks after leaving Y&R tragedy stuck when his younger brother Troy, 18, murdered their Mother by beating her to death with a baseball bat in their Kenosha, Wis home. Bierdz felt extremely guilty because shortly before his Mother's murder he'd revealed his sexuality to her during her first visit to L.A. The "insider" claims that Bierdz's Mother was so shocked that she immediately returned to Wisconsin and that he never saw her again. Bierdz's brother Troy is now serving a life sentence in prison without the possibility of parole. In 2002, tragedy struck again when Bierdz's older brother Craig committed suicide by shooting himself in the head. With a six-month soap contract things are starting to look up. "The big question is - who will he hook up with on Y&R?" says the source, then adding that all bets are on attorney Rafe Torres, played by Yanni Gellman. This is no shock...... Having interviewed the actor, I pretty much expected this is how the story would play out. I find it hard to believe he'd be paired with Rafe though. My God, he looked like a teenager with NuAdam.... with TB, no matter how great he looks, the age difference is just too glaring. I am looking forward to it though. This should be delicious drama! I'm very upset that Phillip is going to be gay. That ruins future story potential for Nina and Christine, who both had romantic chemistry with Phillip. Hell, Lauralee Bell even said she'd be willing to return thanks to these two actors being back. It would be fresher than just throwing her back with Michael and Paul, two played out relationships. I also feel like he's only gay because the actor is. I think they're afraid to show an openly gay actor as a straight leading man. It would be different if Joshua Morrow or Eric Braeden (just using them as examples) came out because they've already been established as romantic leads. They probably consider it more risky with an actor who hasn't been on the show in 20 years. Another reason this doesn't work for me is that it will clearly isolate Phillip and limit his full cast integration. Not to mention how poorly the show has developed Rafe and the latest twist with Adam. On paper it sounds good, but the execution is rushed and very plot driven. Will Phillip become a plot point as well? Why not just make Phillip IV gay and see how Phillip III and co handle it? Also doesn't help that Thom is almost 50 and Yani looks like a school boy next to Michael Muhney. Ugh! So much wrong with this. I can't believe Phillip is back for this. |

Lauralee Bell also said she'd love to see Thom/Phillip marry a man in Genoa City, so I think she has an idea how things are going to play out. Anyway, Phillip is different from Rafe in that he's a major character connected to other major characters. I don't think there's much of a chance of him being isolated. There's too much story to be played out, not just personally and with the family, but what if Phillip were to get involved in the corporate stuff. That could reignite some juicy power struggles. As for why Phillip is gay, my guess is that the actor wouldn't be interested in the role unless Phillip was going to be gay. Actually, I have no doubt about that. The only thing I agree with is paring Rafe with Phillip and I hope that's not true. Rafe looks too young for NuAdam... he's definitely too young for Phillip! |

From what I've heard, Phillip Chancellor III was always a timid, shy character who seemed tormented by many things that even the viewers weren't aware of. I wasn't watching back then so I can't say if that's true or not, but I don't think it's so far-fetched for Phillip to be gay. Lots of gay men "play it straight" for a while and end up pulling away from their families to keep from having to live a lie. However, faking your own death is a little extreme, LoL. I think this could be great as long as it's executed properly. It all depends on the writing. Whatever happens, I'm just ready to see Phillip back in Genoa City and integrated with the rest of the cast. It's time! |

Oooh, so he faked his death so that he could live on as a gay man? Extreme? Yes! But I can buy that! Love it! Good twist! Didn't see it coming.. sure, I haven't even reached episodes with more Phillip (if those even aired) and haven't read my spoilers, so... |

If the tabloid is actually true, I hope its not only because he's gay. Cause really, faking your death and abandoning your infant son so you dont have to tell your family you're gay is incredibly selfish and irredeemable IMO. I would hope they tie it to his alcoholism and horrible upbringing and this was something he discovered about himself after getting away from a "toxic" environment. |
