I hope that EJ gets the opportunity to beat the shyte out of Rafe, primarily because it would the most interesting thing that could happen to that block of wood. I like to give every character a chance and usually it takes a number of months for me to judge and after months and months of the same ol' same ol' I really think Rafe is a clunker of a character. The writing should never have sequestered him with Sami for the first three months and they should have gotten him a job with the Salem PD to introduce him to the canvas.

The fact that the writing has given me no reason to be interested in Rafe except to introduce his even lamer sister and now a dead wife from the past sucks ass.

We all like the couples we like for whatever reasons we like them and I guess if I want to watch a boring stable relationship I could tune into Bope; or into my real life friends for that matter. I speak only for myself. I also understand that Safe is the one couple on this show that recently hasn't fallen into insta-luv but with the number of months that they've been in contact I was hoping that I'd see more than endless adolecent banter. It was a waste of the time they could have used to make him interesting.

GG pulling it off is a different discussion.

You're right, and that's why I stopped watching.

Also.. I dont know where or how you came up with the notion that "They have failed"
In fact the couple is VERY well recieved. Do you have some insider info that the couple fails, or is it only wishful thinking? Ive not read or seen anything to hint at that is why Im asking, and the ratings have been consistant and while not great certainly better than they were for the year *Before* the Safe storyline.

This couple is very poorly received. This board, and others are proof of that. I'm not talking about boards monitored by Safe and Lumi fans only, boards which are only "regular" because they belong to networks (well, one in particular). But even there, if you check out the Ejami thread, you will notice that there are many still coming in, despite the fact that our couple is not having a storyline together, per se. The same is true of Lumi fans. What you are reading is promotion. Millions of positive articles about this couple is not going to make the audience like them more. I won't say most (although it may be accurate), but A LOT of viewers don't like them.

As for the ratings, for the longest time they stayed high because of the storylines. Arianne Zucker, James, Ali, Joe, Thao, Jay, Shelley, they drew viewers in. Again, A LOT of us considered Safe as a "filler" before the juicy stuff came up. We find the current Safe storyline boring and predictable. But then again, no one is holding anyone back from liking their couple. It's a show, and we have our preferences.

First of all, I don't have a dog in this fight because I can't stand Sami and don't care about Safe. Let me make that abundantly clear up front. My preference would be for Sami to be written offscreen permanently.

That being said, on what evidence are you basing your statement that this couple is very poorly received? On the boards? I still don't understand why people will claim that a couple is popular or unpopular based strictly on what they see on message boards, for a variety of reasons:

1. Message boards only represent a small fragment of the viewing audience. This board, for example, currently has just over 4,400 members, and not all of those posters are Days fans. I only post about Days and I recognize most of the posters who post about the show regularly and it isn't anywhere near 4400 people. Days has an audience of between 2.5 and 3 million people and I would be very surprised if even 10% of that figure was represented on all the Days/soap boards put together.

2. Some fanbases are more, shall we say, vocal and motivated than others. Not to mention which boards have different "personalities." There are boards where some fanbases are more active than others. That doesn't mean there are necessarily MORE fans of that couple. It could mean that people from opposing fanbases don't feel like getting into arguments every single time they want to post something favorable about their couple.

3. Shipper boards are often unreliable indicators of the size of a fanbase. Private boards, which many shipper boards are, which require registration artifically inflate numbers, because people who even want to check out the board one time to see if it's something they're interested in have to sign up, thus adding a member and boosting the count. Even if that person reads the board once and decides it isn't for him or her, they're a member now and I doubt most people ever ask to have their account deleted. People also change their minds about couples, sign up to "spy," or simply like having access to day-ahead clips.

4. And last but not least, sock puppets and spamming make statements of who or what is popular or unpopular incredibly unreliable. I have no doubt the studio is aware of these facts, and if they don't, well, they need to move into the 21st century. I don't believe at all that the studio makes decisions based on boards.

So, whether Safe is "really" popular or not, I don't know, but I certainly don't know it based on boards. I would have to have access to the studio's mail count, comment lines, and producer meetings to have a clue about that.

Well said, Paxton. I know fans of some couples who avoid posting anything about them outside of "safe" (not the couple) areas because it turns into a nasty battle if they do. Not because everybody hates that couple/couples but because the people who don't like them are very vocal and very insulting about it. Sometimes it's just not worth the trouble. But, that creates the impression that "nobody" likes these characters/couples which is far from the truth.

Over the last three years, I've been a member of several different message boards, both general and fanbase specific. One one board a particular character/couple might be despised, but is clearly the favorite of another. Determining popularity based on message boards is just futile.

Excellent post with excellent points. I am a fan of Sami and Rafe and I don't claim to know how many fans they have or how popular they are but it is certainly more than the few of us who post here once in a while. I don't know how anyone can claim that they know what TPTB know unless they do work for the show.

No build up. No chemistry testing with other actors. Rafe was strapped to Sami's storyline like a vice - and there was no shaking him loose. It's a pity, too.
How true, and it's a shame.

I have always resented it when the writers choose who they're going to turn into a couple before they've ever set foot on stage and that's true for Rafe and Sami. They've written Rafe into a corner with no other option & that's never a good thing for long term employment.

Paxton, I agree with you on technicality. Technically, you are right. No one knows the total amount of couple viewers of the whole Days' audience. That said...

Yes, the boards are different. However, TPTB do look at them. So do the actors. I find it really silly when some posters (and I don't mean you per se), refer to the boards and polls in support of their view, while at the same time putting them down when their view isn't supported.

Now as far as the internet goes. The boards are obviously part of the internet. You are right, they don't reflect the whole audience, and the boards vary. I was not refering to private boards. That said, TPTB are looking for responses from the audience, and the internet is their most reliable source, even though it doesn't represent the whole number of viewers. They probably use ratios to come to a general "idea" of where preferences lie. It is, after all, their main avenue.

It's true that there are other avenues. There are direct lines to call and voice our opinions, there are campains that we can participate in, letters, but their easiest way of getting a "feel" of the audience remains the internet. JMO. And they do look at the boards. Whatever boards they know of, they look at them. It's in their best interest, since what they care about is the ratings.

When all is said and done though, the writers/producers will do as they please. Regardless of what we want.

I don't know how anyone can "claim to know" anything about a particular couple's popularity unless they are officially affiliated with the show.
if you're a member of several soap boards, it's easy to make a judgement about the couple's online popularity. of course, this isn't necessarily representative of the general audience, but i have to agree with others that say a lot of the 'safe' buzz is purely due to promotion. if you check polls on boards like SC, NBC, Sony, etc, 'safe' does not appear to be very popular at all. like daniel/chelsea, however, they do seem to have a very vocal and devoted fanbase. honestly, if i had to guess which sami pairing is the most popular purely based on online fan presence, it would be ejami, hands down. and i say this as a person that loathes that pairing and sami in general.

while i agree with paxton that the GA isn't necessarily reflected online, message boards are probably the easiest way for TPTB to gauge the popularity of what's being showed on screen. not only that, but the the younger crowd are the ones that are going to be posting most often on message boards, and for whatever reason, that's the age group advertisers want to target most. so i'm not sure it's fair to say that message boards(general ones, not fan-base specific ones) mean nothing for TPTB.

Quoting limited to 3 levels deephe is not being shoved down our throats[bold]Yes, he has, and I think that's why this couple failed.[/bold] From the very beginning TPTB and Ali just raved and raved about them, and I was sorely disappointed. Poor Ali is still trying, and the more she does, the more it makes me gag.

I started loathing this couple from another "place" where some kept pushing it on others from the moment Rafe walked in throgh the door. I mean I understand people liking GG, but it was like that's it, this is the supercouple of Days, when he just made his appeareance. It was game over for me since then, but I did try. I told myself that it wasn't fair, or right to prejudge like that, so I did try to like them. They just don't do anything for me, and I for one can't wait for them to be over.

Firstly I can understand if you dont like someone that having to watch them may feel like they are being "shoved down your throat".. But frankly whenever you tune in to days or any show every actor is thrown at you, including their story.. so that would apply to every cast member that is on canvas with any regularity.

The only thing I resent being "forced" to watch is the endless soft porn, gag me with a spoon scenes of Dan and Chloe.
Rafe and Sami have a real storyline in progress, YOU and others may not like it because some only want to see Sami with EJ and or Lucas.. But many others outside of this board love the SAFE story and couple.
Also.. I dont know where or how you came up with the notion that "They have failed"
In fact the couple is VERY well recieved. Do you have some insider info that the couple fails, or is it only wishful thinking? I agree completely with what Daisy said. It was a foregone conclusion from the moment it was announced that GG was joining the show that he was being brought on to pair with Sami. No build up. No chemistry testing with other actors. Rafe was strapped to Sami's storyline like a vice - and there was no shaking him loose. It's a pity, too. I like GG well enough. I'm not a fan of the character - and I didn't watch Passions - but my impression is we're really not watching this man 'act'. I think he memorizes the lines, and he says the lines. They block the scene and he hits his mark. And that's that. Anything beyond that and he fades in to the background. I get the sense that Ali tries to compensate for his lack of emotion and ends up over doing things. It's a vicious cycle.

Chemistry can't be forced. I realize there are people that like this pairing for whatever reason - but I just don't see great chemistry here. If one's preference is for a cookie cutter, too good to be true 'love' story then it appears that's what they are getting with Safe. For now. But I think once the truth comes out about baby Sydney and Sami realizes that her daughter is alive and well all bets will be off. Rafe, just like GG, will fade in to the background.
:) well as your a devout Ejami Im not too surprised you agree with Daisy, and thats cool.. we all like who we like, and when we dont like someone their percieved faults are ALL we focus on.

But why do you think that when Sami discovers Sydney is alive and hers that will somehow make her stop loving Rafe?.. She loved Rafe when she originally thought her child was alive, so what will be different?
Sami has never questioned EJ's love for his childfren, that has never been the problem. Also its very possible she may think he was involved in the baby switch and create even more distrust.
The simple truth is Sami loves Rafe, and her joy at discovering her baby is alive wont change that, Im sure he will be almost as thrilled.. as he too bonded with baby in her womb, as well as the baby she raised as her own.

So I just dont see it happening that way, because..at the end of the day EJ will *STILL* be a hated DiMera.

Well, we'll see how it will go. It will be a different dynamic, because she hid Grace from EJ, but with Sydney she won't be able to do that. And Rafe would have less influence in Sydney's life, not to mention the constant friction that will be between EJ and him. EJ, not Rafe is the father of Johnny and Sydney, and Rafe will not be able to do a thing about that, thank goodness.

As for EJ being a hated Dimera. Sami doesn't hate him deep down. She even said that she wished she could take him out of that horrible place (the mansion), and as you said, she thinks he's a good father. It's Stephano that Sami hates, no EJ. It's EJ's current dealings with Stephano that Sami is angry at, and when she said "I kept Grace from you because you're a Dimera", that's what she meant. Don't forget that Marlena and John (who wasn't a knight in shining armour at the beginning) are Dimeras, Tony was (and he too was a dark character at times), and yet no one hates these characters, quite on the contrary. EJ will turn out no different, and a very large amout of the audience loves him, whether they are Ejami fans or not. He's a very interesting Dimera. :cheer:

I don't think Sami loves Rafe. I think she loves the idea of being in love with Rafe. She wants what she perceives to be a good guy, someone who the Brady's will welcome in to the fold so to speak. Sami is always ever in love with someone who she has to fight for, or change for. She is always going to be second to Emily for Rafe as she was second to Carrie for Lucas as well as Austin. But she was always first choice for Ej. No matter how wrong Sami thinks Ej is for her she doesn't hate him. She'll always have a connection, and not because of just Johnny or the Colleen/Santo thing. She and Ej share passion, in whatever it is they are going through at any given time in their relationship. When they love they love fiercely and passionately and the same in their hating and fighting. Sami shares more passion with Ej fighting than she does with Rafe in bed. Even if Ejami don't pair up they will at some point come together and agree to get along for Johnny's sake and eventually Sydney's. I don't think Rafe can handle Sami getting along with Ej or even accepting Ej for what he is (the father of her children). He didn't want him anywhere near Grace and was willing to lie and keep Ej in the dark about his child....so what will he do in the future?

I for one think there is a lot more to come for Ej, and we will see good and bad Ej..as well as more interaction with Sami.

I think Sami does love Rafe and I do think Emily will be a problem. Seems ot me like Rafe still loves Emily so this could be interesting. Watching Sami fight for a man like she used to but only this time in mature way hopefully.

Sami has been in enough relationships throughout her life to know what is love and what isn't and what she does and does not feel. This is woman who has loved Lucas most of her life so she knows what love is. Rafe has said that Emily was the love of his life and seems to have taken years to move on to Sami so they both know what it is to love.

Sami and Rafe check in with each other about their feelings alot which is a refreshing change for a Sami related romance, if not a first? Like it or not Sami has chosen who she wants to be with and it is not EJ. Sami has already been married to EJ so there is nothing new for her to explore there. Sami is not being written as conflicted about not being with EJ [well if she is Ali is not playing her that way at the moment]. And based on the way poor Nicole has be be saying be careful, EJ is angry etc - why Sami would even think of becoming romantically involved with him again is beyond me.

Lucas is a man Sami has also loved and trusted, and obviously still does, although they are not doing a romantic dynamic right now. When Sami says to EJ 'I love you EJ, I love you so much.' let's discuss! EJ can dream and obessess all he wants but that's just him being his crazy self - we do not see Sami doing that at all - she is totally focussed on Rafe and her kids now, and Lucas is also welcome in her life. EJ is just the volatile sperm doner [who barges into her house like he owns the place - what's up with that anyway?] right now that she has to be nice to him on Nicole's advice so as to stop him keeping Johnny from her - So even if we see Sami being nice to EJ anytime soon it's because she is heeding Nicole's warning. :peek: :run: :jedi: :scared: i thought I would put up some icons is readiness for the attacks to this post that should come any time now 5..4..3..2..1
