Quoting limited to 3 levels deep
Really? I would agree with this if this was the 2005 episodes, because they were very similar to passions. They lasted too long and very overdramatic, and didn't make much sense. But now, i see nothing similar to passions. The writing is much better then it was, some storylines has went on for a while now (baby switch) but new things happens very often to make it interesting. On Passions and DAYS (when it was still being written by JER) the storylines were the same all the time, nothing new or interesting ever happened, no twists or anything....
For one, since Tomlin came on board we've gone back to getting a lot more fake-outs before commercials. Things have always dragged - that's a soap, but we don't get payoffs at all, and in my experience with Passions, that pretty much defined the show for me. There's no obvious end in sight for several stories. The "endgame" couple isn't as clear as some people claim. Days seems afraid to pick a rooting side in many of it's triangles, and I always felt like that's how Passions was. They were just catering to everyone and throwing bones to all fanbases their entire run. Maybe that wasn't everyone's experience with Passions, but for me it was, and that's very much my experience with Days right now. I don't know how to explain what I mean about the character interactions...it actually has a lot to do with the sets. Fake-outs are used on more then just Days. As far as not being able to choose a rooting side, Days was doing that under Hogan Sheffer too and under Dena Higley last year. Y&R is currently doing it now with Phyllis/Nick/Sharon/Jack. I should also say that Passions never had that problem. With the exception of Passions going with Luis/Fancy instead of Luis/Sheridan in the end, they never once changed their endgames. The couples they seemed to always be steering toward ended up together in the end. JER was never one to not have an endgame as far as couples go.
I just don't get the Passions/Days comparisons. In 2004-2005, I do because that was as close to cartoonish and outrageous as Days ever has been. I just don't see it now. The stories Days is telling are classic soap. Stories are actually being built. The best stories are the ones that make you wait for a payoff because that is what makes the payoff great. Who the hell wants to see a story last 3-4 months and then just end? You run out of ideas burning through story that quick.
That is one of the biggest issues in soaps right now. They just burn through story and miss important beats. The idea is to tell good stories at a natural pace that works for those stories. For some stories, that means they have to go on for a long time. For others, that may not be the case. The trick is keeping them interesting like JER did in the 90's. Just think of the aftermath of the baby switch. That is going to open the door to so much on the canvas. Why? Because they took their time and played the beats, kept it interesting, kept adding layers to it, and involved a good part of the canvas in it. Is it perfect? No. But it's the type of story soaps always used to exhibit and it's classic. Secrets and lies are just as much a part of soaps as romance and adventure and Days is exhibiting those qualities.
I mean, is it just because of Gary Tomlin that people feel this way? He was only a director at Passions. He wasn't a EP or anything. Sure, he seems to be in touch with the JER storytelling style from JER's first run on Days but Tomlin has been in the business for years so to suggest that he would feel Passions was the ultimate model for how a show should be and that Days should be a clone of it is an idea I just can't grasp. Tomlin worked on Days in the early 80's! He just knows what works in this day and age. I think some should watch clips of Sunset Beach and clips of Passions and then come back and say what they feel Tomlin is doing at Days because, to me, it's not even close. There is clearly more of a Sunset Beach vibe then a Passions vibe.
One more thing...Passions' stories went on forever and came to lackluster endings. The baby switch hasn't even been going on a year yet! Anyone remember the baby switch in 2000-2001 on Days? That story went on for a year and a half. What about the Princess Gina story which went on for years? Or the Franco Kelly story? Some stories just go on for awhile, as they should because some should. It's not something that is only exclusive to Passions.

Quoting limited to 3 levels deepnow. I think it's far more likely, as has been discussed in this thread already, that the original plan was for a Brady/Nicole/EJ triangle and for Max/Arianna. When Darren got his new show and left, they had to find someone to pair with Arianna. Felisha might have tested very well with Darren, for all I know, but simply didn't click with EM. Personally, I liked her fine and I never got a standoffish or cold vibe from any interview and I've read a couple of them.
As for abrupt firings, Kristin Renton was fired last year, in August I think, though that was different in that her character wasn't recast. But they had obviously been building and put a lot into Phorgan (which I hated), and then wham, she was out.
Oh, it is speculation (as I made clear in my post) and I only brought up the TO bit because it went along with my point that maybe she brought some drama to the set. Some people tend to attract that kind of stuff. I'm more or less just thinking out loud and I guess I just keep hoping there was a more of a reason to this then just wanting to bank on the LH and EM chemistry or LH's fanbase. I know it's a business but I still think the best thing would've been to tell her she's been let go and to wait a day or two to announce LH's hiring. I'm assuming that didn't happen but that is the way it should've happened our of courtesy IMO. It is pretty known that the plan was to put Arianna with Max. Corday said they were casting someone for him and she appeared shortly after. They even had her working in the Pub and I doubt that would've been their approach to introducing her had she not been for Max. Between Darin leaving and Arianne Zucker's pregnancy, they had to change gears. I think it just took them a little while to realize her and EM don't work well romantically and they didn't want to have to wait long for results so they brought on Lindsey Hartley. As for Renton, at the risk of getting too much into that, it's clear that ouster had backstage controversy written all over it LOL.
Days is known for mishandling casting changes, though. Who was it that found out they were fired because they read it in a magazine? Someone involved in production at DOOL tweeted yesterday that there would be a big announcement today. Maybe this is what it was supposed to be, and the news leaked early? I know just as much as everyone else about FT (nothing) but I just don't think this had anything to do with her. If she caused drama, I don't think her costars would have been as caught off guard by her firing as they appeared to be via their twitter messages. Edit: yea, just looked at twitter and the casting change was the big news the promo producer promised. Oh, I get that. I guess I just would've liked it to be about some sort of drama so I would feel better about this LOL. I love Lindsey but I feel horrible for Felisha and this is coming from someone who usually understands the idea that soaps are a business and you just have to do what is necessary to put out the best and most successful product.
On another note, how does everyone find all these Twitter pages? LOL. A promo producer? Really? Someone should tell this producer to produce better promos for the show  .

I was watching Brady interact with Arianna yesterday and I was thinking to myself-okay she's pretty but I wish it was Lindsay playing the part. I am so excited. They have an undeniable chemistry and I can't wait.

She was actually soliciting info the other day on what the fans wanted to see in a promo. Then she caused a bit of drama by ranking the DOOL couples popularity based on what was supposed to be official NBC data, then removing the rankings.
Some of the actors have retweeted things that she's said, and there really is a producer on DOOL w/that name, so apparently she's on the up and up.
I'd feel better if FT played a part in it too. Unfortunately I think she just got caught in the crossfire, though and wish her the best.

^Thanks for that, six. I will have to pay attention to that producer's page now since it seems she posts interesting facts and seems to hint at upcoming things.
I think some of us from DR should go over there and tell her to start producing better and longer promos LOL.

It's obvious that NBC wanted to save PASS and cancel DAYS but couldn't justfy axing the show with 500k more viewers and a more prestigious brand name. Their solution: expunge the latter's identity and use it as the host vessel for Passions' parasitic corpse. Ugh.
I kinda agree with that, NBC tried to cancel DAYS in 03, and said they would only save it if JER was let back as headwriter. So maybe you could be right.
NBC doesn't own Days and therefore they can't cancel it. There were having contract negotiations in 2003, so yes they could've cancelled DAYS back in 2003 if they wanted too.

I don't care about the length of the baby story. I'm not campaigning for it to end now, because IMO that would be ridiculous. Technically, it's barely even gotten off the ground. Long stories aren't the problem. There hasn't been a payoff in about a year. If the stories are going to be drawn out, there has to be payoff through out, and we're not getting that. And seriously...you want to talk about stories having a lackluster ending? DiMera/Kiriakis feud anyone?

A teeny bit O/T but I'm trying to think of when the last time was (if ever) that Days did this - fire someone and immediately recast the role. Charity Rahmer, lol? Anyone else? Thanks! Hey now- I kinda liked her. She got that Belle was twitchy and annoying.
This is for real? Awesome. I love her, I'd hoped for better, but I may watch for this.
I think it's genius to make Days resemble the parts of Passions that people liked- Ethan/Theresa, Luis & Some Blonde. Passions had a small but loyal base (people would sit through ANYTHING), and it'd be good for Days if they could cash in on that somehow.
Hoping that Tabitha hops over next...

Phoenix, you might have misunderstood one of the things I was trying to say earlier... If the show wanted Lindsay to come on, they should have just put her in the Arianna role instead of Felisha. You'd have had just as much buildup.
It's funny how Passions has been off the air for a little while now and it STILL makes people cringe. I admit, I'm one of those that cringes because although the production values were decent, the acting on Passions was no better than a third-grade play (in general). Although Juliet, Ben and John stood out, some of the lesser actors were extremely painful to watch (not Charity Rahmer-painful, but painful).
I'll give Lindsay a chance. But I'd also like to see more Days returns. Not necessarily Deidre and Drake, but stuff like Wally and Crystal. Possibly Louise. Judi Evans? It is important to grow the audience and bring more fans in, but don't piss off the old-line fans that watched the show in the 1980s and 1990s. We're still here. :)

They can always go back to it whenever they want. It's a hard story to keep going unless you plan on axing either Victor or Stefano in the end because, frankly, that is what would have to happen. Otherwise, how would it end effectively?
I just don't get what sort of payoff you would want without basically ending the story? In a romance/triangle/quad, you can reunite the rooting couple for a little bit and then bring on more problems later but in a story like the baby switch...how do you provide a payoff that doesn't essentially end the story? The whole story is built on one big secret. The only payoff would be exposing that secret and once you do that everything else just implodes.

I would guess LH was looking for things outside the genre. I would bet she came knocking on Days' door and asked for a job, they probablly said hell yeah, hence FT was no longer needed. I will laugh tho if FT gets a better job and if it's on Smallville as Justin Hartley's love interest.

Phoenix, you might have misunderstood one of the things I was trying to say earlier... If the show wanted Lindsay to come on, they should have just put her in the Arianna role instead of Felisha. You'd have had just as much buildup. :) I get what your saying but the fact is they didn't plan on putting Arianna with Brady at first so why would they do that first? They clearly felt Felisha looked good with Darin and I agree with that. They casted Felisha as Arianna to be with Max. If they had intended to put Arianna with Brady from day one, they would've likely gone to Lindsey since she looks good with Eric Martsolf's Brady. Casting Lindsey from day one would've had some fans pushing for her to be paired with Eric again so the pairing with Max would have no chance. Darin quit shortly after Felisha was hired so they had to change gears.

I said they've been using fake-outs MORE. I know other soaps do it, and I know Days has always done it. I said that. Sorry, but to me Passions always seemed like they wouldn't commit to a couple and that they were constantly throwing bones to every possible fanbase (which is exactly what Days is doing now).
The Dimera/Kiriakis feud was more of a springboard to other stories then a story itself. The baby switch isn't just a baby switch. It involves love triangles. There can be payoffs there. It involved a custody battle, which I hate, but there could have been a pay off there. Give the audience something to know what the end is and then give crumbs along the way. That's not happening.

I would guess LH was looking for things outside the genre. I would bet she came knocking on Days' door and asked for a job, they probablly said hell yeah, hence FT was no longer needed. I will laugh tho if FT gets a better job and if it's on Smallville as Justin Hartley's love interest. I don't see that. Lindsey's been out of work for more then a year. It would've happened sooner if that was the case. Her husband is working. She's not desperate for money. I'm sure she wanted to work but I don't think she was begging Days for a job. I'm sure she called at some point knowing Gary as a director from Passions but the suddenness of all this tells me it was all initiated by the show and not Lindsey.

I didn't mean that she was desperate or begging for a job. I would imagine working on a soap has its advantages, it might work better for a mom to have a steady schedule. Working on a soap isn't necessarily a step down. I just picture her asking them for a job, not necessarily for the part of Arianna, but a part in general and it worked out that she fits for the part of Arianna. And yes, I do agree that there's a good chance it was the show and not Lindsey. The thing is, I didn't realize FT's Arianna wasn't working out. I hated the idea of Brady and Arianna but I thought FT was good, it just was still early in characters intro into the show. What ruined Brianna for me was all those bumping into one another moments not to mention the blatant rip off of Ethan/Theresa that would make me wish that ari was played by LH. I also have a hard time picturing Ari and Max together. I wish someone would write a tell all book.

So now that Lindsay is in the role, I expect to see much, much more of the character. Wonder how long it will take for her to move in with Maggie?

I also have a hard time picturing Ari and Max together. I wish someone would write a tell all book. I agree about the repetitive scenes of them bumping into each other. I know it was chemistry testing and they wanted to progress slowly just to be sure but I really wish they had handled all that differently.
The thing that has to be noted here is that the show is taping well in advance. I believe they are likely taping episodes that will air around early September and the Brady/Arianna romance is just now getting a bit more heated so what they are taping now must feature Brady/Arianna in a full fledged romance, I would think. My guess is with that being the case, the show finally realized it just wasn't working with them together in scenes and that the romantic chemistry was not there so they made the change. I'm interested in seeing FT's final scenes and LH's first scenes because I'm wondering what may have been the straw that broke the camel's back and made them realize there had to be a change.

NBC doesn't own Days and therefore they can't cancel it.
There were having contract negotiations in 2003, so yes they could've cancelled DAYS back in 2003 if they wanted too. Yeah, they were having contract negotiations with the OWNERS of the show: Corday Productions and Sony Productions. Brian Frons was interested of getting Days to ABC in 2003.
