The old DAYTIME TV magazine used to run, as a regular monthly feature, a Top 10 list of the most popular actors, actresses, and soaps which was determined each month by reader votes. For those of you who remember the old SON Top 10 I used to do for several years, it was based on the DAYTIME TV polls. I thought I would transcribe some of those charts from some of the DAYTIME TV issues I have on hand so people can see who was really *the* superstars of soaps based on the viewers' votes.

First up, the Readers' Poll (as it was called) from the April 1983 issue of DAYTIME TV. In addition to the Top 10 actors and actresses, they'd also list the 15 runners up. For brevity's sake, I'm going to omitt the also-rans.

The 1st number is their ranking in the previous issue, the 2nd number is their ranking in this issue. The number following their name is the number of issues they've been in the top 10 (consecutive or non-consecutive)

Not yet (so no Santa Barbara mentions at the moment. lol). I'm working on building my Daytime TV collection along with my Soap Opera Digest collection. Unfortunately, I've got far few DTVs than I do SODs, so I'm starting with the oldest issues first and then work my way forward.

Rats! I love the one from '83 and I'm shocked that Philiece Sampler was actually popular as Renee. I never cared for that character or actress. There were rumors about her being a nightmare on the DAYS set.

One minor quibble- I know it's tedious, but the Daytime TV Runners Up are often more interesting than the top 10s themselves. Any chance we can see some? Anyhow, keep posting away Matt. I always LOVED the Daytime TV Top 10!

Thanks for posting these. These names certainly bring back a lot of memories of past favorites. The 70s is still my favorite era for soaps.

Me too Dayslvr...I would be in happy land if I could get it on DVD.

I think these things are fascinating. What is funny to me is I recognize so many of the names. The only 1980s thing I could find in my collection (without having to run into the attic in the cold weather) was from another magazine called Soap Opera Stars, which had voting for the winners and runners up for 1985-1986 called the Annual Viewer Poll Awards.I think I would type up a new thread for that though as I don't want to co-op Matt's Daytime tv one.
