This week, Rex discovers that his bio-dad is the notorious and sinister Mitch Laurence. John-Paul Lavoisier (Rex) discusses sharing DNA with the town sociopath.

SOW: So Mitch is Rex’s dad. Yikes! How does he find out?
JPL: Rex is there in Michigan with his aunt Corrine. She decides to tell him the truth about his father. She warns Rex that “once you look in that envelope, it’s going to change everything,” but of course, Rex has to know. He opens up this envelope that has his birth certificate in it, some money and a gold money clip that says “ML” on it. He looks at the “ML,” and then looks at the birth certificate, which says Mitch Laurence – father, Roxanne Balsom – mother.

SOW: What would you imagine is going through Rex’s head at that moment?
JPL: We had to do quite a few takes with Rex opening the envelope in different ways, with different reactions, so I’m not sure exactly what is going to air. But he has mixed emotions. First, he can’t trust his aunt Corrine. She hasn’t seen him in however long, and she lies to him about having cancer. He’s not 100 percent sure he can trust anything she’s handing him. Roxy has been lying to him all these years – “David Vickers is your dad, Walter is your dad” – and he’s been wishing Bo was his dad for the last eight years.

SOW: Well, at least the mystery is over, right?
JPL: He’s not at all relieved that he’s finally gotten the answer. He is shocked that it might be Mitch. He is scared. He is angry at Corrine for drugging him. A part of him thinks this could be forged. This could be anyone’s money clip. So he leaves Michigan and goes back to Llanview.

SOW: Does he confront Roxy?
JPL: She is still not completely open to him on how [she and Mitch] got together. It’s not completely clear. She was young, confused, and Mitch was a strong and powerful man. He could talk anyone into doing anything. He’s freaked out now because he has Mitch Laurence’s blood in him. He’s not handling that well. For a moment, he does get a little warm-hearted toward her and she does say it was a one-time thing.

SOW: Is Rex aware of all the horrible things Mitch has done?
JPL: Oh, my God, yes.

SOW: How worried is Rex that he might start to exhibit some Mitch-like qualities?
JPL: Rex looks back and remembers how bad of a teenager he was – and that was the Mitch part, the evil inside of him. He’s worried about Shane. Shane also has Mitch’s blood in him. This definitely changes the way Rex looks back on himself – why he did what he did when he was a kid. And now Shane is coming into that age; maybe he could resurface. I’m very excited to see what they do with it.

Now this is a perfect example of a story that was predictable when it first began, yet the writers are capable enough to keep viewers interested despite the outcome being easily figured out. I called Micth Laurence being Rex's dad last year when it really became an issue that Rex wanted to find out during the time he thought Charlie was his dad. Kudos to Carlivatti and his writing team!

Yeah, Betty White is tired of your SHIT!

I kinda dig the fact that Jessica and Rex are brother and sister... not sure why though lol.

Much, much, much more better than it being Spencer Truman.

I like this for several reasons, but mostly:
Bo, who's been like a surrogate dad to Rex vs. Rex's biological dad, the sinister Mitch Laurence!

Now that could be interesting!
