Missed some of your soap? Palu has a musical recap

VANCOUVER–It was a bad day not long ago for Brady and Arianna on the Days of our Lives, a wedding in black ground to a halt on The Young and the Restless – and a B.C. singer captured all the drama in freestyle verse on YouTube.

Paul Beckman, a.k.a. Palu Rainbow Song of Salt Spring Island, a ferry ride over from Vancouver and Victoria, watches soap operas daily and uses them as inspiration for songs. He then posts the videos online.

He's been doing freestyle singing for years – he once sang for five hours straight – and hopes to one day make money off it. But it's Beckman's soap opera recaps that have garnered him a whole new set of fans. He's become so popular that he gets hundreds of visitors every day eagerly awaiting the next instalment.

Missed what happened? Beckman, 54, can be useful to fill you in. Earlier this month he sang about an episode of Days, filling in characters' back-story (as the episode continued to play behind him) with a song entitled "If She Only Knew Her Daughter is Not Alive," drawing hundreds of views.

"It's now recorded for posterity," said Beckman. "Whatever happened that minute, I put into a song."

As the cancellation of Guiding Light earlier this year suggested, even long-running soaps are in crisis. Falling viewership, aging demographics and evolving viewing habits have made them less profitable. Various fixes have been tried to lure fresh eyeballs – General Hospital has, remarkably, added movie star James Franco for a month starting last Friday – but Rainbow's work is for the devoted following.

Since starting in January he's put over 4,000 videos on YouTube. At first he documented four soap operas but focuses now on Days and Y&R. His clips, on average two minutes long, provide snapshots of what's going on as he watches.

"The melody is different all the time and I'm working from two or three song chord books ... . The words just come," said Beckman.

Beckman said he has autism and his mind moves slowly on most things. But when he watches soap operas and makes up verse, his mind can quickly flip from one emotion to another, he said Like sands through the hourglass, he produces 50 to 100 songs a day.

He said he decided to use soap operas as his inspiration after years of honing his talent as a freestyle singer – someone who just makes up songs from observing the surrounding environment. Soap operas were a way to keep him in practice because there was always so much going on.

"I've seen everything on soap operas. Not just marriage and divorces but a lot of mysteries like whose baby is it?" said Beckman. "The only thing I've never seen is someone singing songs like me in a soap opera."

After all... tomorrow is another day!

 Does anyone actually click on his YouTubes to listen to the songs or do they just tune in because they want to see the day ahead early?

CARLY'S BACK!!

I kind of feel bad because he has autism but he does creep me out.

I don't even bother to check out his videos anymore despite wanting to see the day ahead episodes. It's just not worth it.
