Following a six-year absence, the Messenger has returned, and Roscoe Born (Mitch) couldn’t be more thrilled about being back in Llanview.

SOW: Welcome back! It must be so much fun to play Mitch again.
RB: He is a blast, he really is. He’s so smart – they write him so smart, and that really makes a difference.

SOW: How has it been, getting back in the swing of things?
RB: Well, right now, I’m wiped out (laughs). Getting back in the saddle again, it’s not like riding a bicycle. Even though the character fits me like a glove, the batteries in me are kind of old. But I’m doing fine. It’s really good to be back with everybody. I love the people I’m working with.

SOW: Do you think Mitch has gotten worse, in terms of the evil things he’s done? Poor Nash. That was gross.
RB: (laughs) You’re right, that was kind of gross. He’s taking it to a new level, that’s for sure. He has spruced up his act. He doesn’t want to be stale.

SOW: This week, Mitch is in Llanview, causing yet more trouble with his minions.
RB: He’s got eyes and ears everywhere. Nothing escapes his attention. That’s another thing; he’s more powerful than ever. That’s the most important thing. And the writers have really brought that back to the forefront. [Executive Producer] Frank Valentini told me that when we first talked about the possibility of this [return]. He said, “Mitch is going to have his compound, his followers. We’re going back more closely to what he was like in 1986.” He’s definitely amped up everything. He’s working on a much bigger stage. And that’s what he does. He’s a performer, and the whole town is a stage to him and all these people are players to him.

SOW: What other acting have you been doing?
RB: I’ve been doing some voice-over stuff.

SOW: Voice-over work must be a nice gig. No costumes, no makeup…
RB: It’s a great job. You just show up, and they hand you the words. You look at it for five minutes and you do it. I did more than 50 radio commercials for Bank of America between May of last year and February of this year. You can be a total slob – which I guess I am most of the time (laughs).

SOW: You’ve also made a nice career of playing some of the world’s worst fathers: Tom on Y&R, Trent on DAYS. How do you like that reputation?
RB: It’s a living! I was a pretty good father [Nick] on THE CITY. And I got to be a father [Joe] when I came back for 13 weeks on RYAN’S HOPE in 1988, and he was a nice father. I would actually like to play a good father, or at least a father who goes through more of what most people go through. It would be interesting to play a guy who everybody thinks is bad and isn’t. Which is sort of what Robert Barr [on SANTA BARBARA] was, in a way. When he came on, everybody thought he was a bad guy and then they found out he wasn’t. And then, of course, I played the guy who was bad, the twin (Quinn Armitage). I would like to bring some of the things I know about being a father to my work.

SOW: How is your daughter, Alberta?
RB: Oh, she’s fantastic. She’s 12.

SOW: Has she watched you in any of your dastardly soap roles?
RB: Yes, a few times and – I can’t remember if it was Tom or Mitch – but she was [frightened], so I didn’t want her to see it. And she didn’t want to see it. I imagine it is scary for a little kid to see their father acting like that.
