BEST DAYTIME COUPLE

SONNY AND CARLY, GENERAL HOSPITAL

Think back one year. Now, think of what you would've said had someone suggested that within 12 months, sworn enemies Sonny and Carly would be GH's signature supercouple. After your head stopped spinning, and you really thought about it, that should have seemed entirely logical. Here's why. To begin with, you're pairing two of GH's most intensely riveting actors, Maurice Benard and Sarah Brown. That said, there's also the inherent similarities between these troubled characters that make them, well, near-perfect for one another: the deep wounds suffered in childhood, the sense of social alienation, the fierce desire to protect loved ones at all costs...All of which reads like a semester of Dysfunction 101, but it works. Their shared tendency to screw things up allows a level of mutual understanding no past partners could achieve. Of course, given the volatile nature of both characters, many more years of supercoupledom may be a stretch. But as we well know, stranger things have happened...

MOST BORING COUPLE

NINA AND TOMAS, THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS

What's more mind-numbing than a storyline about writer's block? Watching two writers yak endlessly about it. Part of the problem is that Tomas turns tongue-tied when the conversation changes to anything but books. How does he really feel about Nina's bratty son, Phillip? Does he ever get peeved when Nina's ex-hubby, Ryan, barges in after a spat with his whiny wife, Tricia? Given all those espressos Tomas downs at Crimson Lights, you'd think he'd be a little on edge.

Sadly, Tomas's laid-back attitude has had a tranquilizing effect on Nina, who barely cracked a smile when her manuscript was accepted. Nor was she alarmed when Phillip returned from summer camp in late September. Is this the same woman who plugged her no-good husband, David Kimball, five times? The Nina we remember - and love - was a scrappy survivor whose insecurities often got the best of her. That's what made her interesting. Nina should have tossed Tomas into the nearest used books bin months ago and turned the page.

BEST PRIME-TIME COUPLE

BEN AND FELICITY, FELICITY

Timing has long been a tricky proposition for Ben and Felicity. It wasn't right two years ago when Felicity followed her heart, so to speak, trailing high school crush Ben to a New York college in hopes of igniting more than friendship. And it was off again last season when their budding romance faltered as Ben realized he wasn't ready to give Felicity what she needed. But this year, all seemed right. Having dealt with their respective loves and life lessons, Ben and Felicity were rewarded with an abiding love based in friendship. Their adorability took such romantic turns as Ben surprising Felicity with a rooftop movie theater, then transforming their roach-infested quarters into a candlelit love nest. Recently, the timing seemed threatened by Felicity herself, courtesy of a wild night at a frat party. But even that couldn't throw this couple off course. All was forgiven, thanks to their love, communication and understanding. Looks like they've finally got time on their side.

MOST TORTURED COUPLE

SHERIDAN AND LUIS, PASSIONS

Sheridan and Luis have worked together, danced saucy tangos together, faced assassins together, even lived together, but after a year-and-a-half of obvious longing, have yet to sleep together. Heck, it's generous even calling them a couple. Forget their torture - their slow-as-molasses romance had us feeling the pain.

While it was apparent to every viewer since day one that they were destined to be together, it took Sheridan and Luis months of stubborn squabbling before they even admitted that they wanted each other and then repeated misunderstandings and a French drug cartel came between them. But by building the sexual tension and prolonging their quest for happiness, PASSIONS made it impossible not to root for this couple - even if you were sick of them, you still had to see when they finally got together. That's why the latest obstacle (Sheridan's "death") was a whopper, but something tells us that love will conquer all...eventually.

LoL, they won it in 2000, 2002, 2003 and 2004. Ironically, the one year from 2000-2004 that they didn't win it (2001), another PASSIONS couple, Ethan and Theresa, got it.

BEST TRIANGLE

KEVIN/KELLY/JOEY, ONE LIFE TO LIVE

Face it: Kevin, Kelly and Joey are three of the handsomest adulterers on daytime today. But it takes more than good looks to make a perfect triangle, and thanks to a well-written, cautiously paced plot, viewers this year were treated to the final nail in the coffin of Joey and Kelly's tumultuous five-year relationship. Matching up Kelly's guilt over secretly longing for Kevin with Kevin's hang-dog, barely concealed desire was a stroke of genius. It truly caught fire once Joey and Kelly tied the knot - thus setting up the time bomb: Would Kevin sleep with his little brother's wife before or after Kelly spilled the beans? Time told, as did Kelly, which shattered the Buchanan boys' worlds - and finally gave Joey an edge. Joey's really ticked off now, and he'd love to find a way to show it. This, of course, makes for excellent suspense and adds just the right element to keep the triangle in ideal shape.

WORST TRIANGLE

BEN/DENISE/ANDY, AS THE WORLD TURNS

Triangles work best when viewers are torn between a favorite couple and a viable interloper. So when Denise felt obligated to stay in her marriage of convenience to Andy during his paralysis, while true love Ben doubted his rival's sincerity, we were intrigued. Unfortunately, there was never any rooting value for Denise and Andy. In fact, the one constant was that Denise loved Ben, period - and that was never challenged. Denise may have grown comfortable with the Hughes family, but she never seemed to have any romantic interest in her hubby. Instead, the trianglers had endless, practically interchangeable conversations about the predicament and rarely resolved anything. It's a shame after all that, when Andy quickly confessed and Denise won her "freedom", Ben and Denise didn't even have a joyful, loooong-awaited reunion. Maybe the real shame is by that point, we didn't mind missing it.

MOST SHOCKING PLOT TWIST

THORNE AND MACY ELOPE, THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL

We never saw it coming. Although Thorne and Macy had been engaged for months, their nuptial outlook was bleak: Unbeknownst to Macy, her fiancÚ had fallen hard for Brooke. The secret lovers headed to Italy for a romantic getaway, but it fell apart when Thorne mistakenly thought that Brooke had slipped off for a quickie rendezvous with Ridge. As a forlorn Thorne wandered around Venice, he was suddenly comforted by a surprising visitor - Macy. After professing her undying love, she left him standing alone in the rain. Back in L.A., we were positive that Thorne and Brooke would reunite once the misunderstanding was cleared up. However, right after Brooke finished explaining things to Thorne, Macy showed up - wearing a wedding ring. She and Thorne had left Italy together and tied the knot during a layover in Amsterdam. Yikes! This out-of-left-field twist blind-sided even B&B's savviest viewers.

MOST PREPOSTEROUS PLOT

VIRTUAL REALITY, DAYS OF OUR LIVES

Imagine, if you will, a door in a castle that transports you to a world only described in the Bible. A Virtual Eden, complete with fig leaf-style garments, a poisonous snake and yes, an apple. Throw in a series of silly tests of virtue, and you've got Greta and Austin's ridiculous storyline. Sure, DAYS has been known to spin far-out tales, but Marlena's possession was more believable than this plot. From the cheesy special effects to the cartoon-y costumes and ludicrous dialogue, everything about this virtual world was a bust. Unfortunately, the chemistry that exists between Greta and Austin was lost in the mess. Hopefully, like Marlena's possession, this other realm will never be mentioned again.

BEST SECRET

BIANCA'S A LESBIAN, ALL MY CHILDREN

Keeping a soap storyline secret is no easy feat these days, and it was no different for ALL MY CHILDREN when word that Bianca is a lesbian was leaked to the press. But knowing what was to come in no way spoiled this much-anticipated tale. At every turn, the soap made sly references to exactly what was troubling Bianca. Knowing the secret only enhanced scenes like the one when Bianca squirmed her way out of a date with a high school heartthrob. The reveal happened on Halloween, when Bianca went into a lesbian bar - and came out of the closet. Now the hook is watching Bianca come to terms with her identity, while Erica tries to get through to her "moody" teen, yammering on about boy trouble in a misguided effort to relate. At her wits' end, La Kane railed in vain, "I need to know what's going on, and I need to know now. Do you understand me?" Now that Erica's inching closer to the truth, the question is: Will she understand? Bravo to AMC for not using a story leak as an excuse to back out of this important tale.

WORST SECRET

ELIOT KILLED LAURA, ALL MY CHILDREN

The idea that Brooke would fall in love with the drunk driver who in 1988 killed her daughter is unsettling, but could have been intriguing. Sadly, this tale was riddled with problems right from the start. The show hurriedly involved Brooke with Eliot, and didn't do a convincing job of establishing a real love connection. Scenes of the two spouting poetry didn't override a lack of chemistry between the performers. AMC then rushed Eliot's confession, during which he explained that he was really ex-cop Josh, who had run down little Laura. He'd undergone plastic surgery after prison fights scarred his face, and he changed his name. Needless to say, Brooke turned her back on the not-so-holy man, and the story floundered. Julia Barr's Brooke and David Beecroft's Eliot might have generated more heat if only AMC had taken their time as Brooke (and the viewers) fell for Eliot, and then revealed the secret, the dramatic resonance of which is directly related to the depth of Brooke's feelings. AMC could have mined Laura's tragic death for a fulfilling, emotional story. Instead, it just left us feeling empty.

BEST QUADRANGLE

HARLEY/PHILLIP/BETH/JIM, GUIDING LIGHT

In the '80s, we rooted for high school sweethearts Phillip and Beth. In the '90s, we cheered when Phillip and Harley fell in love and wed. In 2000...we were torn. Phillip and Harley's relationship was as fun and passionate as ever, but Beth and Phillip's secret (she was pregnant with his child) threatened to tear the Spauldings apart. Also at stake was Beth's marriage to Jim, who wasn't her knight in shining armor, but offered Beth what Phillip never could: stability.

With all these factors in the mix, we weren't sure what the end result would be. When Phillip revealed baby James's paternity, the marriages seemed doomed. But it wasn't as simple as that. Each couple struggled to accept the consequences of Phillip and Beth's one-night stand - and discovered that both unions were worth saving. Thanks to dynamic writing and acting, the reconciliations of Harley/Phillip and Jim/Beth rang just as true as the estrangements.

WORST QUADRANGLE

REVA/JOSH/OLIVIA/NOAH, GUIDING LIGHT

Josh and Reva have been through rough and calm seas together, so when their marriage sank this year, we were set for either: a) an emotionally charged custody fight/divorce or b) some major torch-carrying/fights about new romances. What we got were fits and starts down both paths. The story focused on Reva tracking down illegal immigrants with boy toy Noah, and Josh careening headfirst into a heavy-duty affair with Olivia. When the four points did come together, admirable performances across the board couldn't disguise that their screaming matches sounded like jealous teenagers bickering. Wouldn't Olivia and Reva's friendship during her amnesiac years in San Cristobel be a bone of contention or source of intrigue for Josh? Wouldn't Olivia have dirt on Noah (her ex-flame's best pal)? History could have saved this foursome; instead, history is exactly where this quadrangle now belongs.

BEST NEW MALE CHARACTER

HENRY, AS THE WORLD TURNS

It was only supposed to be a two-week stint as WOAK's snarky news director. But as the crafty Addison De Witt to Terri Conn's (Katie) Eve, Trent Dawson quickly turned Henry into Oakdale's hysterically funny, one-man Greek chorus with sly innuendo and sardonic commentary. "If you stay here, I'm stuck in Dopedale...so you can moon over Holden all you want. But when I go, you are going with me, 'cause hey, we're a team," he once told Katie in a tone that was half-threatening, half-playful. Dawson has since added more layers, like a subtle vulnerability, and he's constantly fleshing Henry out. Just watch him in the background sometime - whether he's rolling his eyes or listening intently - he's always reacting. AS THE WORLD TURNS wisely brought Dawson back recently, and if they're smart, they'll keep him. It's just too bad every show can't have a Henry of its own.

BEST NEW FEMALE CHARACTER

ALISON, PORT CHARLES

What a difference a year makes - who would have known when snooty material girl Alison first joined the PORT CHARLES gang that she'd transform into a sympathetic heart-stealer? Originally, Alison came to work at General Hospital for the sole purpose of snagging a Beemer from Daddy, but she grew up fast after being attacked by numbers-runner Cedric last summer...and killing him in self-defense. By year's end, she was standing up courageously to her formidable grandmother and forfeiting her inheritance to be with the man she loves, Jamal. None of that character growth could have been accomplished without the engaging talents of Erin Hershey. With her smart mouth and that nasal twang of a voice, Alison easily could have rung one-note, but Hershey's humor and heart truly earned Ali the nickname that Jamal gave her - "Spunky."

BEST FEMALE RETURN

PHYLLIS, THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS

When Phyllis Summers slithered out of town in early 1999, she had been outsmarted by Victor, Jack and Michael, and her infamous spitfire had been replaced with an annoying self-pity. She was so...un-Phyllis. But her return this summer was a welcome jolt of electricity, and this time, the cheeky bad girl didn't just take aim at Chris. She traded clever barbs with new foes Nikki, Ashley, Victoria and Jill, knocking each one off-balance. Her time away also gave Phyllis the chance to remake herself into a sought-after Web producer, jumping from Jabot to enemy camp Newman Enterprises. In the process, she made a fresh list of alliances and enemies. Credit must go to the always-inventive Michelle Stafford, who transformed Phyllis from nut case to net babe by adding believable layers to her once psychotic devotion to Danny. Watch your back, Jack.
