I remember Drake saying he wanted him and Koslow to work together and become the next big couple(or something to that effect) remember all that Jate uproar?
Didn't he make a joke during that chat about how everyone should wish for Marlena to stay dead so JATE could live on? I remember it pissing alot of fans off, LoL. Some of the J&M fans were calling for Drake's head at the time.
That's what it was Kenny, LOL. I wanted John killed off during his drug addiction, Drake was AWFUL.

LoL. I understand why the J&M fans were annoyed though. That would be like Peter Reckell doing a chat with Crystal Chappell and telling his fans to wish for Hope to be killed off so Bo and Carly can be together again. It's kind of like saying "fuck you" to the Bope fanbase. But yeah... it's not worth getting all up in arms over.

After all... tomorrow is another day!

I don't think it's that big of a deal that Deidre doesn't stay in touch with Drake. At least, if it is a big deal, IMO it's just as big of a deal that she doesn't mention staying in touch with Alison Sweeney at all.

Anyway, I enjoyed this interview (aside from the Dr. Norris stuff... it took me a while to realize she was referring to the Dr. North story... which was probably my least favorite storyline in my entire time watching DAYS) and I wish Deidre nothing but the best. I hope she is enjoying her more low-key life outside the biz. It sounds like she has a nice mix of family time and other pursuits like her political activism.

The only thing I question is...why her for entertainer of the decade? I can't remember but was this a fan vote? Marlena pretty much only had the SSK story and John's death as far as major stories go so I'm not really sure if she works as someone who made a huge impact this decade when compared to others. I mean, in the 90's she would win hands down but the 200o? Not sure about that as she spent more time on the backburner then she did on the frontburner.
I was wondering the same thing. Deidre's talents were terribly squandered from 1998 - 2009 with only occasional moments of creative greatness for the character of Marlena. It was sad to watch her become so unimportant in the grand scheme of things.
I'm glad you both voiced this, because honestly, that's the first thing I thought of when I read the caption, before even reading the article. Honestly, wasn't her main heyday in the 80's and 90's? Personally, I felt her acting wasn't what it was when she first started.
But it's nice to hear what's been going on with her. Things have been pretty quiet about her after all the hubbub died down. Personally, after the treatment she got, I'm surprised she even wanted to watch at all.

Ah, yeah, Chatgate. That was wild! I agree with Kenny.......I could see why the J&M fanbase got upset, but I also thought Drake had the right to wish something else for his character. Fanbase stuff can really go overboard. (And, I'm speaking about a variety of fanbases!) It's to their tribute (Dee's and Drake's both) that their acting and ability to work well onscreen caused so much passion. But, I also think it was sad that there was so much opposition to developing Marlena and John away from each other, when Dee Hall and Joe M. worked so well together. (Hell, even Dee and Wayne during the Dr. North saga! If only that wasn't so poorly written). I loved Drake as PodJohn (Pawn), with Tamera Braun, and really liked him with Lauren Koslow. Yeah, I'm a radical. :D I don't dwell as much on couples as I do on individual characters.
I was a teen when Marlena first came on board, and I was an avid Dee Hall fan (the only reason I watched Our House, and Lord forbid, Electra Woman and DynaGirl!!) Those early years were fantastic. If anything, I'm an old school Marlena and Don fan. After not watching for almost two decades and coming back, I was really disappointed in how her acting changed, to me and was never enamoured with John and Marlena. I did like her when Marlena wasn't helpless, but feisty.

Ah Nelson, thank you so much for this interview with Deidre... and thank you for ripping off the Band Aid to what was possibly the single worst story in Days of our Lives history, the SSK. How she could think this was a great story, well... when you're at the center of it, I suppose...

Those were the days. That story had everyone up in arms. It's refreshing to hear Deidre say that JER was forced to change it at the last minute. I'm glad someone came to their senses at NBC, because that doesn't happen very often over there.

Nelson, I can't say exactly where Days would have been had that story been allowed to continue, but I can speculate... right where Guiding Light is now and where ATWT will be in September. This show wouldn't have lasted two more years with the leftover crew had the story gone on. Instead, it was switched, and thank God. :)

GREAT interview.

I still would love to know what the original plans were for the Salem Serial Killer storyline. What was originally supposed to be revealed that made Marlena snap and kill off all of her friends like that?
I think the weirdest thing about that serial killer storyline was how almost every person was murdered simply because they knew who the killer was or got too close to figuring out the truth. It all started with Abe (for seemingly no reason) and from there people just started getting whacked because they got close to finding out who did it. It's not as if there was some huge deeper meaning behind it.

In the end, Abe was the only intended victim and everyone else was just collateral damage. What was the motive for Abe's death though? Everyone else died because they got too close to the truth, so what motive can be given for Abe's death since it was his murder that got the ball rolling in the first place? The writers never really explained that.
When Larry Welch died he took back his confession to Colin's murder. So the commissioner re-opened the Colin Murphy case and wanted Abe to make an arrest.

The suspects in Abe's murder were:

Victor: He knew the truth about Colin's murder.
Nicole: She killed Colin.
Kate: Abe found out about her whore past and was gonna tell Roman about it.
Lucas: Wanted to protect Kate.
Sami: She was angry at Abe and Lexie because they wouldn't let her talk to Brandon on the phone.
Tony: He didn't want Lexie with Abe and he wanted Theo to be raised as a DiMera.
Rex: Had some weird shit going on in his head.

Yeah, most of the motives sucked. Victor and Nicole's made sense since Abe and Jack thought one of them killed Colin.

The thing with Sami was that when JER came back in 2003 he wrote her the same way as when he left in 1997. He ignored how the character had mature (to some point) during 1998-2003.

When "John" died, the character of Marlena was invigorated...
Yes!

I especially loved this scene post-John's death.

Ah, what could've been...

I know! When John's character returned, everything went downhill from there. :frownie:

Yep!

I still remember that scene with Marlena rocking back and forth in her chair sobbing after John's funeral. Deidre was so good. Marlena was broken but she came alive in a whole new way. What ever happened to that Kill Bill-esque kick ass Marlena story that we were promised?!

That scene was her best acted scene in easily over a decade!

As for the "Kill Bill" stuff, I think that started with her face-off with Stefano and that we were getting it right until John came back.

Many of them still called for his head until both Dee and Drake left the show. I still remember when Drake did that interview and was all excited about John and Ava. He took it on the chin there too.

I could see why the Jate chat would upset them but the reaction was way too extreme. It was more enraged then upset. It's just sad, like ladyofthelake said, that John and Marlena could not continue to get individual stories without the show getting raked over the coals and having to change direction to satisfy the fanbase. I would've loved to have seen Marlena's story following John's death continue.

As for the SSK story, there were just so many holes and with every re-write it went from muddled to a complete mess. After they hit the island, they just kept adding more and more junk to it. I think the island story could've been decent if they didn't keep altering things even after that.

Jope vs. Jarlena was worse. With that mix, you had two pissed off supercouple fanbases.
