STERN LINKED TO IDOL JOB

Posted Image

Shock jock HOWARD STERN is the latest big name rumoured to be in the running to take over from SIMON COWELL on AMERICAN IDOL.

Cowell has headed the U.S. talent show's panel since its inception in 2002, but announced last month (Jan10) he will leave the programm when his contract expires in May (10).

His departure has prompted speculation over who will take his place on the show, with recent guest judges Victoria Beckham and Katy Perry among the rumored replacements. Actor/singer Jamie Foxx and American Idol host Ryan Seacrest have also been linked to the post, but both denied rumors they are set to step into Cowell's place.

Now, controversial radio DJ Stern is rumored to be in talks with TV executives to join the judging panel alongside Ellen DeGeneres, Kara DioGuardi and Randy Jackson.

A source tells New York Post gossip column Page Six, "(American Idol) is one of the few shows that could compete with Stern's $100 million-a-year Sirius contract, and Idol bosses think he'd be even nastier than Simon."

Stern recently announced he is looking for work when his contract with Sirius XM Radio expires next January (11), and during his radio show on Wednesday (03Feb10) he hinted he has been approached by TV bosses about a new job.

He said, "Recently I was approached by a major TV network to take over a TV show and leave here and do that next year - and I did turn it down. Well, I didn't turn it down. I started to entertain it and think about it, and then I probably think my demands are pretty heavy and they were attempting to negotiate and I said 'you don't have to'."

I would officially be done with Idol! I can't stomach Howard Stern - he would be mean just for the sake of being mean and not productive to the show. I pray if they do this that Simon gets Paula, because I would watch his new show over Idol.

Well I'm for it since it would kill the franchise and I'm sick of "Idol." ;)

CARLY'S BACK!!

It's not going to happen. I believe Simon has a major say in who replaces him as he will still be affiliated with the show beyond his leaving and he would not be supportive of this. I don't think anyone on the panel would. Hell, I don't think any of the producers would be.

I think this is an idea someone at FOX may have suggested and not anyone on Idol because this is not their style. This is just way too out of left field. They are looking for someone in the industry (an exec/artist/etc) and someone who has alot of knowledge. Jaime Foxx, Tommy Mottola, Katy Perry, and even Ryan Seacrest (guys knows something about music with his radio show and all) have been rumored as replacements so Stern doesn't seem to at all jive with what they are looking for.

I wish they would look into David Foster. He's always been great when he's come on Idol. He's brutally honest, knows the business, and doesn't just say shit to say shit. I think he is a solid candidate. Andrew Lloyd Webber may be another interesting option although he may be too theatrical for Idol but he's always been good too.

Stern will never happen though. I can't see many people being on board with this at all. He would be getting the show in trouble every week.

I really like the David Foster Idea,he's been a guest and like him or not he actually knows what he's talking about or just have the judges be Kara,Ellen and Randy.

Howard Stern Confirms 'Idol' Talks
Feb. 8, 2010, 11:23 AM EST
By Dylan Stableford

Howard Stern told his satellite radio listeners on Monday that he is considering leaving Sirius -- and radio altogether -- to become a judge on "American Idol."

Stern confirmed a report that Fox is interested in hiring the Sirius shock jock to replace Simon Cowell on the reality show.

"There's not a better job on the planet than judging that [bleeping] karaoke contest," Stern said.

"It might be possible, we'll see," he said, adding: "They'd have to pay me a ton of dough because I already make a ton of dough."

Stern's five-year, $500 million contract with Sirius expires at the end of the year.

Responding to a television report speculating Fox would have to match his current annual salary, Stern replied: "A $100 million to judge a karaoke contest? Yeah, I would do that show for $100 million."

Stern said he would not do a radio show if he got the "Idol" gig. (Which makes me think that this, too, is pure posturing in a contract year.)

"If I do say so myself, I can't imagine anyone else but me replacing (Cowell)," Stern said. "I mean, I don't know. How else are they going to make that show work? Who knows how to broadcast and who knows how to be interesting? And who's not afraid to speak their mind?"

One hitch in the Stern-to-"Idol" scenario would be the King of All Media's fear of flying. Stern said he turned down an opportunity to appear as a guest on the "Tonight Show" during Conan O'Brien's last week because he didn't want to fly to Los Angeles.

On Monday, Stern said his fear would not prevent him from taking the "Idol" gig, despite the disparate auditions.

"It would be the best thing that happened to me," he said. "What a cush job -- $100 million for four months. Who wouldn't take that?"

By the end of the show, however, Stern jokingly offered what he might say as a judge -- the kind of offensive material that's made him a legendary a shock jock but would all but kill the chance of Fox hiring him. We're not including those comments here, but you can read more on TheWrap.
