They put up some boards along the track.

I can't imagine the traffic there Jinxie. My step sister even left her house for the week. She ended up going to Kelowna. I don't blame her though.

Live. Love. Laugh. ♥

All my family is out there still, and most of them took off too. A lot of family went to Cali for a while. Its horrible to commute in the city right now. The company I work for now allows me to access with a lot of clients on the west coast, and most of them are out of work during the Olympics as per the holidays their bosses have granted in honor of the events.

Good thing they got those boards up NOW!

'Threats' force Weir to stay in Olympic village
Activists upset about fur Weir used on U.S. Figure Skating Championships costume

VANCOUVER (AP) -- Johnny Weir is staying at the Olympic village because he was concerned about his safety after receiving what he considers "very serious threats" from anti-fur activists.

The American talked about staying in a hotel because he didn't enjoy his experience in the Olympic village four years ago. But security has become his main concern.

"I felt very threatened," he said Saturday. "I'm not allowed to say how everything got through, but my agent got letters and faxes and e-mails. I got letters at the ice rink, somebody found my phone number.

"All these crazy fur people. Securitywise, to stay in a hotel would be very difficult. There have been threats against me. I didn't want to get hurt."
Weir is sharing a two-bedroom suite with ice dancer Tanith Belbin, which made for some humorous by-play earlier in the week. But the three-time national champion wasn't in a joking mood Saturday about accommodations -- or about changing his costume for the free skate.

"I'm just an easy person to pick on because I like fur," he said. "It's easy to put your case against an athlete who is going to the Olympics. It's a very good, easy thing for these activists.

"It's a very scary thing. I'm a figure skater, I'm not some huge politician who gets these things all the time."

Weir drew the ire of animal-rights activists last month after he added white fox fur to the left shoulder of his costume for the free skate at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships. After nationals, he said he would wear faux fur in Vancouver.

"It was not because I was pressured to change it, but because I don't like faux fur," Weir explained. "I didn't change the costume, I'm just switching back to another costume."

The men's short program is Tuesday and the free skate is Thursday.
Weir's career has stagnated since the 2006 Olympics, where he was second after the short program and then plummeted to fifth. He missed the bus to the rink for the free skate in Turin, which he admitted unnerved him.

So how might these threats affect Weir, who finished third at nationals to grab the final U.S. spot for the Olympics?

"I don't think anything overpowers my skating," Weir said. "This costume controversy was silly. It didn't change my opinion about anything, it didn't change my life."

In fact, Weir said he would wear fur again in a costume if he felt the outfit warranted it. The black jacket he sported at a news conference for the U.S. men's team had fur lining.

Weir certainly hasn't lost his ample sense of humor, though. He joked about realigning one reporter's wardrobe, raved about the cleaning products he brought to Vancouver and left the convention center with a smile and a wave.

World champion Evan Lysacekand U.S. champ Jeremy Abbottalso are staying in the Olympic village.

"To stay in the village is great to meet new athletes from all over the world that work for the same goals as you are," said Abbott, who is in his first games. "It's amazing."

Lysacek finished fourth in Turin and, like Weir, carries some bad memories of those Olympics. A two-time U.S. champion, Lysacek had the flu during those games. He briefly considered staying in a hotel in Vancouver.

But he's in the village, too, sharing a suite with pairs skaters Jeremy Barrettand Mark Ladwig. And Lysacek is eager to get started.

"It's sort of the crowning moment of the last four years," he said. "The skating has been going really well, training is going well, I feel good. I think I have a good understanding of what worked well for me and what didn't work, and I think I come in as a much smarter athlete than I was four years ago."

I knew something was wrong in the stadium when Wayne Gretzky was just...standing there. Pissed that the 4th part of our torch didn't come up!

I'm going to the Mens Canada/Switzerland game on Thursday - so stoked!!!

Jen Heil was awesome, but I felt bad for the Canadian girl who fell. That sucks.

Yeah, she was rocking it and probably would have taken bronze from the pink haired american if she haddnt fallen. Ah well.

Im looking forward to whatever today brings, every channel last night was replaying the Mens short track where the Koreans cheated but still took gold (BOO!) at different times so it was basically the only thing on.

After all... tomorrow is another day!

Figure skating starts tonight right?

I saw that Weir article on the fur. There was also another one talking about how he was decorating his place for the games with all kinds of scented candles and all these other decorations packed and had a picture of Lady Gaga to put on the wall as "our icon" "to watch over us."

Was rooting for Apollo Ono,he was awesome in skating.

I was praying my ass off during the Luge competition that nobody else gets hurt, thank god they used a different path.I got a little scared when one guy briefly fell off his board.

I gotta give props to all those involved in these olympics games,no matter where there from, these are great to watch, but also very dangerous, they do things I could NEVER do.

I think too much is being made of the luge safety issue. Shortening the mens track to use the womens was a bad move IMO, they've thrown everyone off their game. The wall and padding was sufficient. Sometimes we need to stop looking to point fingers and accept a freak accident for just that.

That maybe true, but clearly things were wrong with the track,2 people were injured before the guy was killed, its considered the most dangerous luge track in the world for some reason, they said even the most skilled people were having issues. They did put up a wall finally, course they did it AFTER when it should have been done way before,so sad someone has to die for people to be smart and fix things, always seems to be the case.

They've already done an investigation. The track was not to blame for his death.

Remember he was only what 22? Very inexpierenced for his dangerous sport.

Exactly. Additionally, the track has been in operation since 2007 with no major incidents. Fastest in the world, yes. Most dangerous ... no, NBC is commentating the issue to death cause they have nothing else to report.

I disagree that too much is being made of the luge safety issue.

Anyone who saw that poor man die will never forget what happened. Not the viewers, who will associate his death with this sport for a long time to come. And certainly not the competitors themselves including his countryman who was so broken up about what happened he had to withdraw.

What I heard was that the officials were saying the reason they moved to the women's level was for the sake of the competitors themselves to reassure them about the speeds because so many were concerned after their fellow competitor died. So that was probably the right move.

I also think it was really dumb that there was no wall or padding or anything in the part of the track where the accident happened. It was definitely foreseeable that something like that could happen and negligence on the track designer/builder to not take steps to prevent it ahead of time. I've also heard that Canada prevented competitors from other countries from getting to use the luge track for practice that much in the year before the games so as to get a competitive advantage and I think that was a mistake too.

In any event, this sad episode has been a huge black mark on these games and may just wind up being the thing Vancouver's Olympics is most known for no matter how many happy or exciting moments occur in the days ahead.

This again is a huge exaggeration on behalf of the american media. Canada followed all of the rules regarding this, and have still given more access than other countries have in the past.

The US particularly was ridiculous in demanding an extra 6 weeks of track time. Its a little hypocritical of them to be bitching about fairness after making requests like that.
