Weir definitely has the artistry but his basic technique (edge quality, etc.) could be better. I use to judge skating myself so I have a pretty good idea about this.

I'm just glad Plushenko's smack-talking self was put in his place.

Dick Button is probably super happy about how things turned out too....

Plushenko did not look happy during the medals ceremony. OH WELL IS A DEEP SUBJECT. He kept talking shit about Lysachek not doing the quad to the press. Hey, if you're scared, say you're scared. Otherwise, put it on the ice and shut up.

I may sound like an ass, but I am glad Weir lost just based on what he wore. WTF?

I jumped up and yelled when Lysachek took gold, awesome ending!

I busted ass to get out of work and the FF my way through the DVR of skating in a rush to catch up. lol I'm so happy Evan won! I went all giddy for Evan after the last Olympics and have been rooting for him in all his comps ever since. I felt bad for Jeremy Abbott's nerves getting the better of him, though. And Weir, although starting with lower base values, was definitely underscored, IMO. I didn't find his routine to be any less difficult than some of those above him who couldn't even complete some of their elements.

Plushenko rips judging system after loss

While the gold and bronze medallists posed for pictures on the ice, Evgeni Plushenko was plotting his escape.

The Russian figure skater tugged his silver from around his neck and darted for the opposite end of the rink, where security personnel wouldn't let him out. They pointed him in another direction, where he hastily beat his retreat.

The Quad King was dethroned Thursday night in the Olympic men's figure skating competition, losing gold to American Evan Lysacek, who proved you don't need the four-revolution jump to be victorious and proving perhaps the new judging system works.

Plushenko didn't think so.

"I think we need to change the judging system because quad is quad," Plushenko said afterward, still in a visibly miffed state of disbelief. "If Olympic champion doesn't know how to jump quad, I don't know. Now it's not men's figure skating, now it's dancing. That's my point."

Japan's Daisuke Takahashi won the bronze, also sans quad.

The quad has polarized the men's figure skating field, with high-flyers such as the 27-year-old Plushenko believing you shouldn't be able to win without it. The Russian star, who won silver at the 2002 Olympics and gold in 2006 in Turin, Italy, came out of retirement at another shot at Olympic glory, but in the end, his lack of the artistic side of the sport would prove his undoing.

Plushenko did do a monstrous quad in his opening combination, but was lacking in his component scores - elements such as transition and skating skills and interpretation that skaters such as Lysacek and Canada's Patrick Chan earn high marks for.

The Russian didn't hide his bitterness in the outcome Friday, arriving 10 minutes late to the post-competition media conference and asked for permission to leave only a couple of minutes later.

"I was convinced that I won, but I suppose that Evan needed this gold medal more than I," he said stiffly. "Maybe because I already had one. It's not that bad, three Olympic medals, one gold and two silver."

Canada's Jeff Buttle, who won the world championships in 2008 without a quad, said the best skater won Friday.

"Pleasantly surprised," he told The Canadian Press. "Actually watching Plushenko skate, his jumps were a bit shaky, even though he did a nice quad-triple. But there's just not a lot of substance to his program so I'm glad that Evan was awarded (the gold). He had the full package."

The hosting of this Olympic is a big failure. So many amateur mistakes.
We knew that all along though. When they announced it would be in February, I laughed. That's like, the tail end of our ski season. And it always starts getting sunny and nice around this time of the year. I live right outside of a popular tourist area and I hear all the americans exclaiming about how nice it is, no need for snow boots - LOL!

Anyway, we aren't the only one postponing. Happened in Torino, too!

Damn. Switzerland sure gave Canada a huge scare in Men's Hockey.
OMG - I know! I was there! It was INSANE - never seen so many flags in my life. Canadian hockey fans are totally crazy, LoL! The energy was intense, and you had people bellowing "Oh, Canada" at random times.

I'm very worried about the Canadian Mens Hockey team. That game should have been in the bag 5 -1 - at least! It really shouldn't have been that close. Anyway, thank god for Crosby...but still. I found the plays in the 3rd period very sloppy.

Gee,soar loser are we,you at least got a damn metal, least be happy with that.Because he did a quad he should have gotten gold, someone should let him know that it's not all about one move you do in skating, its about your entire performance, not just one thing you do.I saw this coming,I could see the divaish attitude last night.

Switzerland seems to have Canada's number lately. They beat us in Torino and came very close here lastnight. They also played the US pretty good as well. It was so weird seeing Domenechelli playing for Switzerland. He used to play with Iginla with the Kamloops Blazers and they won a memorial cup together in 1995.

At least Russia lost to Slovakia lastnight :)

Pleshenko should shut his mouth. I hope he retires again and stays retired.

Yeah I get all that but there are other things that has annoyed me. One example is when a functionary held one of our skiers 14 seconds longer then when she was supposed to start. And during the mens race there were several skiers that was allowed to start sooner than they were supposed to.

And then there is poor production with the camera work and shit like that. The hosting just has a very amateurish feel to it.

And I love how the only ones that defend it are you canadians :D Relax, it's not like anyone is declaring war on your country just because we give a little critique.

Oh, no, there are a lot of things wrong for sure. The hosting is bad, bad, bad. NBC is FULL of interns from my university. That have no experience. It's embarrassing when the CTV (canadian coverage) is better than the US stuff.

And have you seen our mascots? They look like they stepped out of some sort of Korean cartoon. One is Quatchi - the son of Sasquatch, LMAO. Cute...but seriously?!

Anyway, didn't even know about those other things - I'm more concerned with these awesome celebrity parties (which we NEVER get), LOL. Speaking of which, I keep seeing the NBC people out - late - and then hosting the next morning!

I always root for the US team, too. I'm not sure why! If it's not us who wins, I always default to the US team. I'm so excited for Monday's hockey team - Canada vs. USA!

After all... tomorrow is another day!

Weir was so robbed. I wonder if it was to try to keep him out of the exhibition skate (the top four finishers are guaranteed spots).

Pluschenko (and Russia as a whole) bitching about his silver may not change his medal color but I bet it gets the judges to give the gold to the Russians in ice dancing.

And I still think the Olympics luge organizers were negligent in the Georgian luger's death and this article reinforces that feeling.

Apparently the organizers were warned by one of the mid-tier lugers that the track was too dangerous and they needed to give the less experience, skilled lugers more practice time to ensure the safety of the event but in certifying the track as safe all they did was have the top 8 lugers in the sport run it. The man who was killed was No. 44 in the world in the 65-man field.

I have been very critical of the Vancouver Olympics but one thing I think most people can agree on is that their logo is about a billion times better than the monstrosity from London 2012.
