Save Our Soaps Rally in NYC for GL and ATWT. Had a wonderful time this afternoon. GL's headwriter Jill Lorie Hurst stopped by and offered her support. CNN filmed us as did a Dutch TV camera crew.

It had been a wonderful evening and what I needed now, to give it the perfect ending, was a little of the Ludwig Van.

Congrats Rutherford! I wish I could have been there. I sure hope something good happens as a result of the rallies and petitions. I hate to see soaps die.

In addition to a CNN camera crew, there was also a Dutch TV camera crew. As a presidential historian, I explained to the Dutch TV camera crew that the American Neilsen ratings is as flawed a system as the American Electoral College. As a male, I have never been in the Neilsen's desired demographic, and I am now, unfortunately, not in their precious 18 - 49 age group, either.
As any political history student will tell you, neither Rutherford B. Hayes, nor Benjamin Harrison, nor John Quincy Adams or even George W. Bush should have been elected president.
The Neilsen's, in my opinion, does not truly reflect the true viewership of a program, but, sadly, like the Electoral College, we're stuck with it. Shows live and die by the ratings.
The enthusiasm at the rally was awe inspiring and I am very proud to have been part of this effort. Normally, I am a very quiet person, but this is an issue that I feel very strongly about.
A venerable television icon, like ATWT, should be quietly snuffed out after 54 years.
Furthermore, i explained to the Dutch TV camera crew that I am to be featured in a forthcoming book entitledSurvival of Soap Opera: Transformations for a new Media Era, to be published by the University Press of Mississippi. In the book, I talk about growing up with both ATWT and Edge of Night. I was born three weeks after their April 2, 1956 CBS premieres, and I was one of only two fans invited to Edge's last day of taping back in December 1984.
