What are the chances of a new soap opera within the next few years? The last new american soap opera was Passions in 1999.. why hasn't there been any new ones?

Because American soaps on major broadcast networks are dying/dead. If there is ever a new soap it will be on cable or the internet, and will not resemble the soaps we knew and loved.

I don't see CBS/NBC/ABC ever starting a new soap. Unless by some miracle the soap genre explodes in the next few years.

I think CBS would be wise to do a daytime version of Big Brother to replace ATWT. It's a win-win- BB is basically a reality soap & Julie Chen gets more work. Shocked that Les Moonves hasn't thought of it yet.

Hacienda Heights is going to be syndicated so if that were to do well, I bet we'd see a few more syndicated soaps. All it takes is one new soap, probably in syndication or on cable (like MTV's new version of SKINS) to do well, and others will copy and there will be another influx of shows.

The days of the 50 year soap though are probably long gone. And maybe on broadcast TV in the daytime too.

I doubt it. The cost is too much and the current ratings do no back up any case to think of making a new soap. If soaps continue they'll be on the net.
