Interesting read from Jim Romanovich, who oversaw the Daytime Emmys. http://www.baselineintel.com/research-wrap?detail/C8/the_decline_of_western_civilization_part_iii_the_daytime_soap_opera/#comments According to his twitter page, he wrote this before the Emmys aired. Even though the ratings were up, they will NOT be producing the Emmys next year. |

Interesting read. I like his correlation of the decline of soaps with the interruptions from both the Gulf War and OJ trial. As for his prediction/theory that 2 more shows will be gone by 2020, I think thats a safe bet with OLTL being rumored for this year. My guess after OLTL would be DAYS. Thanks for posting! |

You know what, I thank god for that. After watching last night's mess I think it can only get worse from here. No wonder people in the industry look at daytime drama as the ugly step sister. This event was suppose to celebrate the best in daytime not be some cheap variety show joke. |

Oh bullshit. This guy talks out of his ass. Does he really believe the show got good ratings in the 90's because of Joey Tribbiani? LoL! The ratings were up because the show was outrageously entertaining. |

I also agree with this statement:
While I do agree that the 90s were entertaining, it killed something inside soaps. I was guilty of liking both DAYS and GH in the 90s! It did bring a rejuvenation of fantastical stories, but looking back, the bright light burned out. Now we have the internet with shows that focus more on words and less on pizzazz. Maybe its a good thing because I believe soaps are sorely missing character development and maybe we'll get that with these web-based soaps? Its too early to tell, but the internet has this vast potential of bringing in some good entertainment. |

I agree, but watching a show on a computer just isn't as satisfying as sprawling out on the couch and watching a show on TV. |

I thought I was seeing things with that "Joey" statement! So much of what this guy says is "off"! The OJ trial has been a scapegoat for so long and "more women going to work"! Most mothers I knew started working in the 60's and '70's! The WATERGATE hearings were a HUGE " soap opera" which interrupted shows so much that Hope Brady's mother, Addie had an over year long pregnancy as did Jennifer Hughes with Frannie! The difference is that in the early '70's viewers came back because there was a quality product to come back TO across the board! So many shows in the '90's were shit because of the revolving door EP's, writers and characters! People watch soaps to see familiar characters through the years! Ratings don't stay "ironically high" for five years because of one wild story arc or a running gag on a sitcom! The decline of the soap opera has nothing to do with OJ, working moms, the internet or cable! The decline is because of the wild roller coaster of quality! The "industry" can look in the mirror for the "problem"! Soaps aren't dying because of outside forces! It's an "inside job"! |
