CRISIS AT DAYS! DAYS fell to the bottom of the pack during the week of 7/12 (and stayed there during the week of 7/19), which prompted emergency meetings and talk of future story. "We recently had a powwow about where we're going with the show", confirms Executive Producer Ken Corday. "Some things are going to be enhanced, some things will be tied up, as opposed to pulled back." But how did things fall so far, so fast? "I can give you a number of reasons why, reasons outside of the show which should be mentioned, because they are good and honorable reasons," says Corday. "The first is that viewership traditionally goes down in the summer. Also, we just found out that NBC.com is getting 4.5 million hits a month viewing our show. So, we are the fourth most-viewed show on any network web site. It's good for the network, and it balances out the other end of it. Plus, we knew going into June that we had a lot of pre-emptions looking at us. We had U.S. Open golf, and when you don't have the show on for two days or three days, that erodes audience. But that's something we have to deal with every year. Also, all the ratings and demographics are off - as low as they've been - throughout all of the lineups. So, how do we fix it?" In story, for one. "The story needs to be accelerated," he admits. "But there is great stuff coming up in the next few weeks - fantastic payoff to a lot of story. What happens after that is even more of a twist and more exciting. It's must see in August and I fully expect to see an increase in the ratings from this point out. We're also going to put Bo and Hope more front and center, take EJ, Nicole, Sami and Rafe and make the story more so about the four of them. I think the dynamic amongst the four of them is fantastic." Though the numbers are low right now, Corday is not discouraged. "I definitely feel there is light at the end of the tunnel," he says. "We've reinvented the show economically as far as the production goes. That was extremely difficult to do with half the money. To steer the ship a few degrees into a better current is easier to do. We are about to reinvent the storytelling pace on the show. I feel extremely good and positive. I feel very strongly about Dena's story, November sweeps into March of next year. The network is enthusiastic about the changes in the show over the last year and where it's going in the coming months and especially the fact that its succeeding so well on the streaming end of things. I think we have a great plan in place. I think we will give the viewers a much higher level of romance, which perhaps they have not been getting. The pieces for the puzzle are all still on the screen. It's just a matter of rearranging them." (Thanks DC Cubs!) |

So basically nothing's really changing? Great plan. :eyeroll: Corday just needs to man up and admit that Higley's stories suck ass. Enough spin. |

I know people are going to feel he's making excuses but he's not. He's right about how viewership goes down in summer (that doesn't account for spring but still) and the fact that the amount of people streaming the show is that amount will hurt the general ratings. He seems to think the amount of streams balances things out and that the network likes that so that is a good thing. Networks do seem to think online is the future so that is a major plus in favor of Days renewal if they can do well online. The preemption stuff is BS because they do happen every year but he did say that so whatever. I don't think the show has to panic and I think he's smart to just focus on moving story. The payoffs should be enough to get the show back to around a 2.1-2.2 during the Fall when people are actually around to watch the show. I agree that the dynamics between Rafe/Sami/EJ/Nicole are good providing the story they are in works. The one we've seen for most of this year is not good. I also think the fact that Bo and Hope will be frontburner is a good thing and, hopefully, that means the fallout from NT Hope will play out all Fall. So, these meetings happened in mid-July? So, we should be seeing these changes in additions to the ones we seem to be seeing onscreen currently. That's an awful lot of transition, which is why I'm glad it seems to have more to do with reinventing and tweaking story. Otherwise, it could be a complete mess. This was one of his better crisis mode articles. He didn't sprout BS and he didn't overdo it and set himself up to put his foot in his mouth. He provided an assessment of things and exuded confidence. That is what an EP is supposed to do. Edited by PhoenixRising05, Aug 5 2010, 04:22 PM.

but why doesn't the summer and the streaming online affect other soaps? Why hasn't B&B or Y&R or even GH gone to last place in the summer.....shit the show starting sucking ass in March , that is the fucking spring! Corday needs to catch a clue....making the quad of suck front and center isn't going to do much of anything (shit they have been front and center and it's done NOTHING!) as long as Dena is there, nothing is changing.... |

EJ/Nicole vs. Sami/Rafe works, and did for a while....that's where they need to go... Bo & Hope, to me nothing says loving like Bo & Hope... If they can speed up the stories and not let them lag, for month's and even years they might be able to get the viewers to return... |

Don't buy the ratings are always down in the summer season...sure they are, for EVERY SHOW, not just Days. There is no getting around the fact that Days sucked more than the other shows. ETA: I guess I need to learn to type faster...someone beat me to it. Edited by marty, Aug 5 2010, 04:29 PM.

I was asking JS about the upcoming stories in Greenville and he (jokingly) asked, "Would you like me to give you the scoop on how November sweeps will play out?" Then said..."Well, I can't...because it all got moved up two months. Everything that was supposed to play in November is happening two months earlier..." So while it's clear they've done some re-tooling, the question I have is what happens during September, October and November...which Corday seems to have conveniently failed to mention between this:
and this:
It would seem to me there is a potential for whatever gains might be made in August to be lost again if there is nothing but a holding pattern between what was going to happen during sweeps and what will actually happen when the time comes. |

But that's not quite what he said will happen. And I don't really ever recall it being EJ/Nicole vs. Sami/Rafe. If anything, it was EJ vs. Nicole/Sami/Rafe. |

I'm not saying the quality hasn't had anything to do with it but there is no way the show would've dropped this low. The show dropped last year too. It's been like this for years in the summer. And it does happen to other shows. Look at GH. They've been pulling out all the stops this summer and they are only a little ahead of Days. If Days hadn't done as well as it did from Fall 2008-February 2010, people wouldn't think of this as a big deal. It gets headlines because the decrease looks worse than it is. This is not just a Days problem. It's a GENRE problem. I don't care if every show was dishing out Shakespeare this summer. The ratings would still show drops and/or minimal to no improvement. Corday is right on that. |

It had been a wonderful evening and what I needed now, to give it the perfect ending, was a little of the Ludwig Van.

If, and it's a big IF, Corday is not just blowing smoke about the streaming and the fact that the network likes that, then things might not be as crappy as they appear in the ratings. But, I have a hard time believing Corday most of the time. As for the "plan," if they met in July, we won't be seeing any real changes until September sometime since they film so far ahead. I do hope that putting Bo and Hope front and center means playing out all of the fallout for the NT Hope reveal, not just reuniting Bo and Hope overnight. Giving more story (if that's possible) to EJ/Sami/Rafe/Nicole just makes me want to vomit. I love AZ, but I don't want to see her forced to play third or fourth wheel in that quad. The only part that really caught my eye was his comment that "some things will be tied up, as opposed to pull back." I do wonder what he means by that. |

I kind of agree with what he is saying. If I could pick ONE thing that has contributed to the downfall of the show, it was the endless episodes centered on Daniel, Carly, Chloe, Melanie, and Philip. It was dominating the show, and it was BORING. I don't think anyone cares about Daniel and Chloe, or Philip and Melanie. The same for Brady and Ari, which has been rectified by writing Ari out. None of those characters should be driving story. I couldn't care less who Sami ends up with, but I just don't believe her pairing with either Rafe or EJ has contributed to the loss in ratings. Too many people are invested in the outcome.

Corday may have done himself a favor by not giving up everything in the plan to save the show like he has done in the past. All he said was that Bo and Hope would be seen more, as will EJ, Nicole, Sami and Rafe get more spotlight on the four of them in their story rather than other people that were involved. Very vague. That's good because it doesn't give the fans a lot of hope that something is going to happen, which they produce in their head, and then once it's on screen, it's not executed the way they may have wanted and they rip it to shreds. I know that's how I feel about Brady's supposed "dark" turn, which I'm assuming was this past week and the rough sex he had with Nicole. Was that it? If so, I'm disappointed. |

Okay, I completely zoned out after you said you were asking JS about upcoming stories..... :embarrassed: You were talking to JS....... :wub2: Okay, I'm all better now... :$ Seriously, I agree, if everything's moved up due to the tanking ratings.......what's going to happen in November??? Oh, I forgot, Dena will pull some story out of her a$$ (literally) and all will be fine, since she's such an AWESOME writer.... :sarcasm: |
