Cheryl Cole and Dannii Minogue have been ordered by X Factor judge Simon Cowell to "grow thicker skins" and not hold back in the new series of the hit talent show.

The next series of X Factor starts this Saturday but, despite its continuous success, the pop mogul wants it to be better than ever and is employing a host of new tactics to make sure it sweeps audiences off their feet.

His first move has been to tell female judges Cheryl and Dannii they need to stop treating the show like a cat walk and be more brutal with their acts.

Simon feels that the two ladies are often too "nervous" to criticise their own groups but this year, he wants to see them being brutally honest - like him - and creating shockwaves.

A source told the News of the World: "Simon felt that last year Cheryl and Dannii went too easy on their own acts."

"He believes they are nervous to say what they really think in case fans think they are being too mean. They hate being booed but Simon reckons they need to grow thicker skins."

The source added: "He's never scared to criticise his own acts. He wants the other judges to do the same and stop holding back."

And Simon - who famously criticises his own acts to hordes of boos from the audience members - won't be taking this lying down.

It seems Miss Minogue and the soon-to-be-Miss Tweedy are being thrown straight into the deep end after both having taken time off work.

Dannii missed the first stages of the show while she gave birth to her and Kris Smith's baby Ethan Edward, and Cheryl had to step out of the last round of auditions and boot camp after she contracted malaria.

Both will be back on fighting form for the judges' houses stage though.

But, if Simon has his way, they won't be looking as preened as they usually do as the fierce critic thinks they need to cut back on their grooming time and spend time more wisely by advising their acts instead.

The source said: 'Cheryl can be feisty so Simon's told her to let go and say what she's thinking and Dannii can be sharp-tongued.'

But Simon is also toughening up the show by cutting back on over-used audition songs, such as Kings of Leon's Sex On Fire, and is banning sob stories told by the wannabes.

According to show host, Dermot O'Leary, he wants this year's audition show to be about the music, not the emotions.

Dermot said: 'Simon's stripping it back to a challenge show and I love that.'

Anti-prostitution campaigners are accusing Cowell of glamorising prostitution. X Factor bosses have allowed one contestant to stay on the show, despite knowing she works as a hooker. "We haven't banned prostitutes," Cowell said. "If a person applies to The X Factor it's obvious they want to do something better with their life." Choose Life, a charity which helps prostitutes escape vice, has criticised X Factor for making 19-year-old Chloe Mafia (real name Chloe Heald) an icon for young girls. Heald, who advertises herself as Candy ("100% English Yorkshire dirty slut"), and has charged £1,500 ($2,250) a night for sex while auditioning on the show, denies being a prostitute. On Saturday, Heald, who told judges she was jobless, got through to the boot-camp stage despite audience boos. Tabloid newspapers are currently negotiating five-figure deals with the teenager to reveal more dirt about her past. She has been arrested more than 140 times, including once for stealing a man's wallet while he was being beaten up. As Cowell knows, there's no such thing as bad publicity. Just as the worst acts get the most attention, so too do those with a spicy whiff of scandal. The greater the controversy, the greater the amount of money pouring in to production company Syco. X Factor has continued its upward momentum, pulling in its highest Saturday night ratings of the series so far. The 5th episode of the singing competition peaked with an audience of nearly 13 million on ITV1 with a 52% audience share.
