'American Idol' Allows Online Auditions For First Time

It's hard to believe that a new season of "American Idol" is just around the corner, but it's even harder to believe that the reality-TV ratings juggernaut has been around for a decade. To celebrate the 10-year milestone, it was announced Wednesday (September 15) that, for the first time, "Idol" hopefuls can submit online audition videos to MySpace.

From now through October 6, aspiring Kelly Clarksons and Chris Daughtrys between the ages of 15 and 28 (as of July 15, 2010) have the opportunity to submit an audition video. According to a news release from the network, entrants must demonstrate their "stellar singing ability by performing one of the songs from the approved list a cappella. Videos are limited to 40 seconds in length, and are limited to one submission per person. Auditions will be judged in a similar fashion to the live audition cities and a select number will advance to the next round of callbacks in Los Angeles."

The song list includes Bill Withers' "Ain't No Sunshine," Keith Urban's "Kiss a Girl" and Barry Manilow's "Copacabana," to name a few. Fans will be able to share the videos across various networks and watch highlights in a special gallery on the MySpace page.

This "American Idol" offseason has been a hectic one. Aside from Simon Cowell, Ellen DeGeneres and Kara DioGuardi being out as judges, the show also dropped its age limit to 15 to make sure it doesn't miss out on a potential Justin Bieber.

Now if they would just announce who will be on the judges' panel next season ...

American Idol host Ryan Seacrest will unveil the new panel of judges for the Fox reality show on Wednesday, September 22nd, at the Forum, the network said. With so much speculation about Idol's judges all summer, there is not much suspense left for what is expected to be an official introduction of singers Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler and veteran Randy Jackson. Unless there's the addition of Elton John.

I love this. It opens it up to people who can't actually drive (or afford to) to the auditions. I'm shocked it took them this long. I can only imagine how many talented people stayed away because they couldn't make the trip. I can't see this as being a bad thing.

I should get my niece or nephew to submit this way.

Translation: We dont have time to do the open auditions now with how long this judge search has taken.

They've done auditions as far as I know- I'd swear they were in my area a few weeks ago.

This is a smart way for them to get people in front of the new panel without people saying that it's faked, since they weren't at any auditions already held. It's also something different during the audition process, which I guess could be interesting.

I think it's kind of funny that they chose MySpace. Hadn't heard much positive about that site in a long time.

But they've been doing auditions. They've just been doing the "cattle call" auditions to select who goes before the judges. The judges will be needed beginning next week. Ryan Seacrest is supposed to unveil the panel next Wednesday, right before the judges begin their visits to the audition sites. They've basically done what they've done every year. This is just an additional feature.

MySpace is owned by the company that owns Fox, so it makes sense it would be on that service.

Exactly, this is Fox trying to make myspace somehow relevant again in the age of Facebook.

Why bother showing the audition stage now anyway though when there's no more Simon to make fun of the people who suck now.
