OLTL: Ron Carlivati & Frank Valentini Sign Contracts with ABC; Valentini for 2 years, Carlivati for 3 years

Maybe this will help put those pesky cancellation rumors to rest. TV Guide Magazine has exclusively learned from ABC that the network recently struck new deals with One Life to Live executive producer Frank Valentini and head writer Ron Carlivati. Valentini, who yesterday celebrated his 25th anniversary with OLTL, has signed a two-year contract to remain with the show. Carlivati's contract is for three years. Unlike CBS and NBC, ABC actually owns its daytime dramas, so the concept of a show pick-up doesn't really apply here. Thus, this news is as close as it comes to ABC acknowledging its commitment to keep the show on the air. Next week, I'll bring you the first post-deal interview with Valentini and Carlivati, in which they discuss their new lease on Life and where they plan to take the show in the future. In the meantime, can we all just relax a little bit?

So the Denver Post article turned out to be a half-truth, but judging from the wording here it's more like a 3/4ths-truth.

With any luck, a condition of their new contracts will be that they have to re-watch their work from 2007-2008, so they can be reminded of what good storytelling is.

Well with the current state of the show I am not so sure this is good news

Great news. Despite the stories not being as good as they were in late-2007 and 2008, the overall show, from both writing and production standpoints, is the best it's been since I started watching back in 2003. I wouldn't want anyone else in their positions.

I hope Carlivarti can return to his good writing. I'm sure Frons has alot to due with the crappy storylines for the past year.

Has to be. There's just no reason for half the year to be great storytelling and then the other half to be lackluster.

Still stick to my opinion that Ron Carlivati is the best headwriter in daytime, hands down. The catch? When he's writing his own material. No doubt Fronsie got in the way of last year.

I have to admit I bailed on the show awhile back! But other than writer's burnout or a substance abuse problem, there's no explaining the same person putting out brilliant material and making OLTL THE best US soap and then writing the clusterfuck I've seen when I can BEAR to peek in! SOMEONE is interfering somewhere!
