Let me be the first to comment since I posted them LOL. I was so excited for this week because it's the first week of the season and I was looking forward to comparing the live+same day numbers against the season to date numbers since it would tell us the impact of later DVR viewing on soaps because it's the first week of the season but I had forgotten that later viewings don't get counted until week's end so we will have to wait until next week to make that comparison. Damn LOL. Anyway, it's the later DVR numbers that are keeping me from panicking for ALL soaps. I know the focus will be on Days but given everyone else (except Y&R) went down, I don't think I would worry if I were Days yet since everyone is so bunched up together and they still are OK in 18-49 (keep in mind, the 18-49 numbers stink but Days is doing ok if you consider how everyone else is doing LOL). GH has to be frustrated. They've thrown everything but the kitchen sink at viewers the past few months and nothing. In fact, they are lower than before. Maybe, like Days, they get helped by later DVR viewing. I still think they made a mistake putting forth so much in summer but, like Days, I have a feeling other things like Internet and later DVR viewing are helping. The most interesting thing about the numbers is the high numbers on Monday. All the soaps, except B&B, seemed to drop off big time after Monday. Days got a 2.0 Monday and then dropped to 1.6's to end the week. GH had a 2.1 on Monday. What the hell happened on Monday that had the numbers so high and why the steep drop for all the soaps as the week went on? This is why I really think DVR viewing and Internet viewing is having an impact. It's almost like people tune in Monday and then, if they don't like what they saw, they either tune out for the week or just DVR or watch online. Edited by PhoenixRising05, Oct 1 2010, 12:37 AM.

Nielsens HAVE to seriously consider DVR viewership. I know they're starting to already. The Office is a popular show with the college crowd, some of whom are out enjoying a few beers on a Thursday... if they don't watch this show live it's on their DVR (or they're watching NBC.com, Netflix, whatever). Alternative viewing sites have to be considered. |

Sorry, didn't realize there was a protocol to posting on ratings. I did notice that GH has taken quite a hit as well. I'm thinking once they put Brenda & Jason back in "PC" with the rest of the characters it should pick up some (storyline wise). The Brenda story has seemed slow to me. They should've intergrated her into the canvas sooner IMO. Other than that, GH has been pretty decent to me lately. I think it's just a sign of the times for soaps. |

I'm sure DVR viewing is heavily considered. That is why you don't see soap execs panicking much anymore. Hell, OLTL has been struggling and their creative team just got re-upped. Corday was praising the online viewership for Days a few months ago. I recall ABC putting out a press release months ago praising the online viewership for it's three soaps. It's all about managing budget and being profitable at this point. That is why the networks focus on demos. I'm beginning to wonder why they bother putting out live+same day numbers. They should just wait until Sunday and put out the total numbers with later DVR viewings included because I firmly believe there has been a massive shift in viewing habits. I also think shows, both primetime and daytime, are cracking down on episodes being put up on youtube and other sites. They have to. Otherwise, how do you count that viewership? My niece and her friends now watch OLTL, Days, and GH on Youtube. I can imagine other college students as well as others do the same. That is alot of viewership not being counted. They either need to keep cracking down or need to find some way to measure the viewership on other sites but the official web sites, which I have no idea how they will do. I'm not excusing the shows or TPTB. They can and should do better. However, this is not all on them. There is no way this much viewership is being lost because of quality. Hell, I've seen more people tuning back into soaps like Days and GH in the past year or two then I have tuning out, especially with the advent of DVR's. So many people I know stopped watching soaps or daytime TV because of work and too much going on but, with DVR's they can record and watch them when they can. Oh, there isn't protocol. I was just kidding around because I posted them and figured why not go ahead and comment  . As for the Brenda thing, I think the pacing was fine. Her return needed buildup. In fact, I feel they rushed it as it is. That is what soaps are about. Building up to those big moments. The problem was they brought her back in a lackluster way in the middle of summer (ratings hell for soaps) and surrounded her with strangers for the first few weeks. They should've had her with characters people knew or in PC, perhaps being held by The Balkan. Hell, they could've had her with Franco. At least the fans would be familiar with him. |

Gotcha. ;) I've felt like the Brenda thing has drug out.....maybe it's that she was with "strangers" and I was waiting for the reaction of the characters I knew. I don't think it bodes well to alienate characters from the show as a whole. As to the DVR and other outlets, it definetly is affecting viewership imo. I dvr GH everyday. I dvr a lot of shows and watch when it's convienent. |

My nephew is a media studies major at school and he's got a research project coming up in his TV and Media class. I think I'm going to push him to focus on changing viewership habits because I don't have the time or energy to conduct this kind of study myself  . I really want to know more about this. I just wish we had access to such things as online numbers for soaps, the actual later DVR viewing numbers, etc. The good news is next week's season to date numbers should provide some idea on the DVR impact so I anxiously await that. |

I am going to spin this for every fanbase so here I go: The Ejami fanbase: "The ratings suck because no one wanted to see Ej shot dead by the woman he loved. They should give Ejami a chance, a real love story for them, but they never have and they continue to suffer from it. The rest of the stories suck and basically the highest rated day was when EJ breathed on his own" The Safe fanbase: "The ratings suck because Safe hasn't been given the proper reunion story, Ej is still very much in play in their story so how can the Safe fans feel good about this and tune in knowing that Ej lives and will cause Safe more problems. Not to mention that the rest of the stories suck too, so nothing interesting to watch" The Lumi fanbase: "People tuned in on Monday wanting to see if Ej died and when they realized he didn't croak, people stopped watching and viewership dwindled the rest of the week...Days didn't do THIS bad for 3 weeks while Ej was in a coma, the minute the guy breathes on his own the ratings start to suffer and by the time he uttered Samantha's name toward the end of the week, the rating was at 1.6. Plus the rest of the stories suck and at the very least Lucas can't be blamed for bad ratings...or maybe his absence can" The Ejole fanbase: "If Ej would have woken up and uttered Nicole's name instead of Sami's the ratings would have stayed consistent. No one wants to see Ej continue to chase Sami around town. Plus the rest of the show sucks, why did Nicole have to arrive trashed to Chloe's shower again? Why?" The GA: "Days sucks, I'm tuning out. EJ/Sami/Rafe take up too much screentime, the pacing is awful, the stories are stupid and frankly the show looks cheap and is badly written" KC will start to panic soon, Days isn't good, but it was a bad week for soaps in general, however I don't see KC just sitting by and doing absolutely nothing so at the very least I expect a HW/EP change soon with cast changes following that shortly thereafter. |

Sorry, but as an "EJole" fan I'm SUPER HAPPY that Nicole is as far away from this shit-tastic story! In fact where is Nicole's story? Oh yeah, its the Sami Brady show and Nicole is relegated to being nothing but a side character in the Brady/Viv story. |

Seems to me the shows with the promotional gimmicks are the ones that have lost the most. I want to see a good, solid, consistent show day after day. Wish they'd quit with the parlor tricks already and give us what we've been asking for. (hint: it isn't always "bigger, faster, louder") |
